Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Memory is a subject that recently has attracted many scholars and readers not only in the general historical sciences, but also in the special field of art history. However, in this book, in which more than 130 papers given at the XXIXth International Congress of the History of Art (Amsterdam) 1996 have been compiled, Memory is also juxtaposed to its counterpart, Oblivion, thus generating extra excitement in the exchange of ideas. The papers are presented in eleven sections, each of which is devoted to a different aspect of memory and oblivion, ranging from purely material aspects of preservation, to social phenomena with regard to art collecting, from the memory of the art historian to workshop practices, from art in antiquity, to the newest media, from Buddhist iconography to the Berlin Wall. The book addresses readers in the field of history, history of art and psychology.

Book excerpt: The papers collected in this book provide many new observations about the artistic interrelationship between Italy and the cities of the Dalmatian coast during the fifteenth century, with special attention given to the influence on both sides of the Adriatic of the styles of Donatello in sculpture, Squarcione in painting, and Alberti in architecture. Essays are devoted to fifteenth-century painting in Dalmatia and its ties to the opposite shore; to the centrality of Padua in diffusing artistic ideas throughout the Adriatic; to Venetian sovereignty over Dalmatia; to Renaissance villas on the Dalmatian coast; to the architectural activity of Michelozzo and his shop in Dubrovnik; to the Chapel of the Planets in the Tempio Malatestiano at Rimini; to the Chapel of the Blessed Giovanni Orsini at Trogir; to Niccolo di Giovanni Fiorentino's work in Dalmatia; to Giovanni Dalmata's work in Italy; and to humanist poetic inscriptions devised for statues in Dubrovnik by Lorenzo Guidetti. The contract between the Opera of the Cathedral at Trogir and the stonecutters Niccolo di Giovanni Fiorentino and Adrea Alessi is transcribed in an Appendix. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A vibrant city-state on the Adriatic sea, Dubrovnik, also known as Ragusa, was a hub for the international trade between Europe and the Ottoman Empire. As a result, the city suffered frequent outbreaks of plague. Through a comprehensive analysis of these epidemics in Dubrovnik, Expelling the Plague explores the increasingly sophisticated plague control regulations that were adopted by the city and implemented by its health officials. In 1377, Dubrovnik became the first city in the world to develop and implement quarantine legislation, and in 1390 it established the earliest recorded permanent Health Office. The city’s preoccupation with plague control and the powers granted to its Health Office led to a rich archival record chronicling the city’s experience of plague, its attempts to safeguard public health, and the social effects of its practices of quarantine, prosecution, and punishment. These sources form the foundation of the authors' analysis, in particular the manuscript Libro deli Signori Chazamorbi, 1500-30, a rare health record of the 1526-27 calamitous plague epidemic. Teeming with real people across the spectrum, including gravediggers, laundresses, and plague survivors, it contains the testimonies collected during trial proceedings conducted by health officials against violators of public health regulations. Outlining the contributions of Dubrovnik in conceiving and establishing early public health measures in Europe, Expelling the Plague reveals how health concerns of the past greatly resemble contemporary anxieties about battling epidemics such as SARS, avian flu, and the Ebola virus.
