Book excerpt: This book is a collection of poems penned by Charles Churchill. He was an English poet and satirist. Churchill is quite infamous for being the latter during his lifetime, which made him many enemies, and brought reprisals. His scandalous conduct brought down the censure of the dean of Westminster, although the protests of his parishioners led him to resign his offices, and from then on Churchill was free to wear his blue coat with metal buttons and much gold lace without remonstrance from the dean. Some of the titles included with this book are 'The Rosciad', 'The Apology Night', and 'Prophecy of Famine'.

Book Narrating Marriage in Eighteenth Century England and France

Download or read book Narrating Marriage in Eighteenth Century England and France written by Dr Chris Roulston and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-04-28 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the eighteenth century, when the definition of marriage was shifting from one based on an hierarchical model to one based on notions of love and mutuality, marital life came under a more intense cultural scrutiny. This led to paradoxical forms of representation of marriage as simultaneously ideal and unlivable. Chris Roulston analyzes how, as representations of married life increased, they challenged the traditional courtship model, offering narratives based on repetition rather than progression. Beginning with English and French marital advice literature, which appropriated novelistic conventions at the same time that it cautioned readers about the dangers of novel reading, she looks at representations of ideal marriages in Pamela II and The New Heloise. Moving on from these ideal domestic spaces, bourgeois marriage is then problematized by the discourse of empire in Sir George Ellison and Letters of Mistress Henley, by troublesome wives in works by Richardson and Samuel de Constant, and by abusive husbands in works by Haywood, Edgeworth, Genlis and Restif de la Bretonne. Finally, the alternative marriage narrative, in which the adultery motif is incorporated into the marriage itself, redefines the function of heteronormativity. In exploring the theoretical issues that arise during this transitional period for married life and the marriage plot, Roulston expands the debates around the evolution of the modern couple.

Book RePresenting Bisexualities

Download or read book RePresenting Bisexualities written by Maria Pramaggiore and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 1996-07-01 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is bisexuality coming out in America? Bisexual characters are surfacing on popular television shows and in film. Newsweek proclaims that a new sexual identity is emerging. But amidst this burgeoning acknowledgment of bisexuality, is there an understanding of what it means to be bisexual in a monosexual culture? RePresenting Bisexualities seeks to answer these questions, integrating a recognition of bisexual desire with new theories of gender and sexuality. Despite the breakthroughs in gender studies and queer studies of recent years, bisexuality has remained largely unexamined. Problematic sexual images are usually attributed either to homosexual or heterosexual desire while bisexual readings remain unexplored. The essays found in RePresenting Bisexualities discuss fluid sexualities through a variety of readings from the fence, covering texts from Emily Dickinson to Nine Inch Nails. Each author contributes to the collection a unique view of sexual fluidity and transgressive desire. Taken together, these essays provide the most comprehensive bisexual theory reader to date.

Book Botany sexuality and women s writing 1760 1830

Download or read book Botany sexuality and women s writing 1760 1830 written by Sam George and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2017-10-03 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this fascinating study, Samantha George explores the cultivation of the female mind and the feminised discourse of botanical literature in eighteenth-century Britain. In particular, she discusses British women’s engagement with the Swedish botanist, Carl Linnaeus, and his unsettling discovery of plant sexuality. Previously ignored primary texts of an extraordinary nature are rescued from obscurity and assigned a proper place in the histories of science, eighteenth-century literature, and women’s writing. The result is groundbreaking: the author explores nationality and sexuality debates in relation to botany and charts the appearance of a new literary stereotype, the sexually precocious female botanist. She uncovers an anonymous poem on Linnaean botany, handwritten in the eighteenth century, and subsequently traces the development of a new genre of women’s writing — the botanical poem with scientific notes. The book is indispensable reading for all scholars of the eighteenth century, especially those interested in Romantic women’s writing, or the relationship between literature and science.
