Book excerpt: When they were little girls, Kamilah and Denise were always at each other's throats. The fact that they were sisters didn't matter to either one of them. Years later, as they meet at Mama's funeral, they realize not much has changed. Denise is still living her life, hating the ghetto she came from while Kamilah refuses to leave it. The Goode Sisters explores what happens when two strong African-American women dig up dirt on each other, name call and fight in the name of jealousy and deceit. But a deep, dark family secret threatens to pull both sisters into a sleazy, sordid underworld that they may not be ready for. They hash out feelings on everything from the boardroom to the bedroom to how hard it is to still find a good Black man. This humorous novel explains why 'sistas' just can't seem to get along.

The boxed set includes: Sippy Cups Are Not for Chardonnay Friends, family, colleagues, the UPS delivery guy—suddenly everybody is a trove of advice, much of it contradictory and confusing. With dire warnings of what will happen if baby is fed on demand and even direr warnings of what will happen if he isn’t, not to mention hordes of militant “lactivists,” cosleeping advocates, and books on what to worry about next, modern parenthood can seem like a minefield. Here’s how you can separate the practical from the practically certifiable. Naptime Is the New Happy Hour Once the zig-zagging hormones and endless, bleary-eyed exhaustion of the first year have worn off, you’re left with the startling realization that your tiny, immobile bundle has become a rampaging toddler, complete with his or her very own, very forceful personality. How do you deal with that tiny bundle of joy that’s suddenly become, like, a real person? Gummi Bears Should Not Be Organic From the moment life first drops us Hunger Games–style into parenthood with just a naked, crying stranger and Google for company, we’re taunted with scary studies and impassioned opinions about how to do it perfectly. You’re going to need a friend to give you a shoulder to cry on when times get rough, and to give you a smack upside the head when you start replacing Goldfish crackers for kale chips. Luckily, Stefanie Wilder-Taylor’s in the market for a new MFF: Mom Friend Forever.

Book excerpt: Hot on the heels of More Imaginative Than Ordinary Speech: The Poetry of Cat Ellington comes a riveting and remarkably uplifting compilation of free verse that was erected to witness the uncommon life of its distinctive authorship in the captivating art of Gogyohka poetry. Introducing Memoirs in Gogyohka, an alluring, albeit double-edged, biographical account inspired by the diaries of Cat Ellington. Highlighting a selected assemblage of Ellington’s random diary entries from the 1980s to the present, Memoirs in Gogyohka provides the reader with a first-hand look into the journals of one of the most compelling women in the arts as it strolls through the courtyards of her many life experiences, including interracial dating, family turmoil, inner-city living, Black-on-Black crime, eroticism, lesbianism, anti-feminism, and much more. Flanked by Cat Ellington’s Prologues and Epilogues, the works of Gogyohka featured on these elegantly decorated pages include “The Ol’ Double Standard,” “He Called Me ‘Baby Golden’,” “A Cut Through Bone and Marrow,” “The Revelers,” “How to Love a White Man,” “Right Back Atcha,” “The Iceman,” “She Flew In On Her Broom,” “The Bitch Called Karma,” “Amazon Women on the Earth,” “Snake Eyes,” “Lying and Denying,” “Single Black Female,” "Serenaded by Kenny G," and many, many more. Hardly a depiction for the faint-hearted, Memoirs in Gogyohka packs a one-two punch of emotions as it proudly carries the history of its author on the broad shoulders of intrigue, amusement, insight, and admiration, while daring to prove the blessedness of her distinction where the written word is to be regarded. Poetry by Cat Ellington. Unconventional beauty.

Book Tapestry

  • Publisher : iUniverse
  • Release : 2011-11-22
  • ISBN : 1462064922
  • Pages : 348 pages

Download or read book Tapestry written by Jeanette Michelle and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-11-22 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tapestry is a soap opera style drama based on realistic characters with a splash of fiction. Tapestry details the lives of several people of various age groups as well as ethnicity, culture, religious beliefs and sexual preferences that meet by chance and becomes a part of a social gathering. Members of this meet up group have secretes that they try not to reveal that are self evident to each member. Each character has a story to share and explanations for their lifestyle and problems. A turn of events is suddenly centered on one particular member, which changes certain members lifestyle. Tapestry also renders the importance of family, extended family and close friends. The message Im trying to convey from Tapestry is that we may all be different (personalities, ethnicity, culture, religious and political beliefs and or sexual preferences), but there shouldnt be a reason why we cant get along. This world is a melting pot. America is a melting pot and what make us unique are our differences. We may not agree all the time, but we still should agree to disagree and move on. Stop dwelling on the personal lives of people and accept that person for who he or she are. Everyone cant live your life, but that doesnt mean that I cant like that person or be friends with that person. Most often we isolate people or distant ourselves from people all because theyre not what you want them to be. We also need to understand that everyone is not meant to be the best of friends, but that doesnt mean that I shouldnt respect that person. This is a new dawn and a new world a world of advanced technology. We can conquer countries, but we cant live together in this world peacefully. We should be more than that. This is what this book Tapestry reveals.
