Book 51N4E Skanderbeg Square Tirana

Download or read book 51N4E Skanderbeg Square Tirana written by Freek Persyn and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication shows the ambitious transformation of Skanderbeg Square, in Tirana, Albania. The project was initiated by the then Mayor of Tirana and current Prime Minister of Albania Edi Rama and realized under current mayor Erion Veliaj. It is the result of a collaboration between Belgian architecture office 51N4E, Albanian artist Anri Sala, Belgian environmental designers Plant en Houtgoed, and Albanian company for project implementation iRI. Transforming the central square of a nation that is founded only in 1912 and that is now a developing young democracy, the project compresses all the hope and tension that come with that transition. With its focus on transition, this publication is a pilot episode of a series called Chapters, a progressive documentation of the work of architecture office 51N4E and its collaborations with related people and practices. Every Chapter combines the presentation of one or more projects with a forward-looking reflection on the key issues that shape them. Produced progressively over the course of the next years, the ambition of the whole series is to outline how 51N4E aims to engage with contemporary society in all of its complexity.

Book Understanding Emergent Urbanism

Download or read book Understanding Emergent Urbanism written by Sotir Dhamo and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-08-31 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ideas presented in this book are a conceptual leverage to correct the rigidity of top-down practices and bring the real city, or the city of everyday life, closer to the city of conventional planning. Considering self-organization as the starting point at the base of complex systems, this book tries to understand how specific qualities emerge and evolve from this behavior. For this, the book discusses new ways of looking at and understanding cities by applying holistic methods and approaches based on the conceptual grounds of quantum, fractal, and complexity theories. The book highlights the fact that the information on how to transform and build a city is contained within the city itself. In this regard, some methodological steps to unpack complexities and translate the essential qualities of space into potential generators for city design and planning are provided. The book urges courageous experimentation and proposes a methodology where the computational nature of urban phenomena goes along with historic anthropological ideas, thus emphasizing the characteristics of a specific reality in a model. They do not exclude each other; in fact, they are part of the unbroken web of wholeness. Importantly, the proposed methodology supports gradual and natural coevolution process in the city through combining planned and unplanned actions and the involving multiplicity of actors, impacting on Urban Planning and Design Practice.

Book The Bomb and the Soviet Embassy in Tirana

Download or read book The Bomb and the Soviet Embassy in Tirana written by Uran Butka and published by Booktique.al. This book was released on 2014-12-01 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE BOMB AND THE SOVIET EMBASSY IN TIRANA The book by the writer and historian Uran Butka “ The bomb and the Soviet Embassy in Tirana” recently translated from Albanian to English, is a historical-legal study of one of the typical massacres of the brutal communist regime in Albania. The massacre that took place on the night of the 26th of February 1951 is at the same time the most illegal and unprecedented in the history of both the Albanian and foreign legislation. First of all, because the decision to realize the plan of the massacre took place not in the court of law but in the office of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of Albania, on the gathering of the night of the 20th February 1951, with the pretext that a small amount of dynamite was thrown in the backyard of the Soviet Embassy that actually broke just a few glasses the night before the meeting. This caused the immediate gathering of the heads of the State-Party leaded by Enver Hoxha . The meeting was called by the Minister of Internal Affairs Mehmet Shehu. In this meeting was decided that extraordinary measures had to be made without considering the laws in force, 100 or 150 people had to be arrested immediately and the most important people 10 or 15 amongst them had to be executed without trial. <>- said Mehmet Shehu during the meeting. Secondly, the arrests that were executed during 20th and 23d of February 1951, were not just political but also illegal, because they were executed without an arrest order or warrant from the prosecutor and without any court order of any kind, the names were taken only by the death list made by State Security. Another reason is that no investigation was made no court no appeal, so every step of the criminal and civil code were trespassed and violated . The victims were executed by a firing squad secretly at midnight near the shore of Erzeni river, so that all evidence would disappear. An massive operation also took place to deport their families into concentration and work camps. Last but not least , since the execution without trial made the headlines, within and outside the country, and since it involved the Soviet Embassy, the Supreme Court decided to make fictitious records, as these records were made during trial, but two members of the Supreme Court, Hydai Beja and Nonda Papuli, refused to sign these documents since no court had been made. So among other things a forgery of the documents was made to legitimize the massacre. All these jurisdictional and administrative violations failed to cover up the massacre without trial and with no guilt proven . In this way these known intellectuals from all over Albania with no trial were executed, to arouse fear terror and submission to the regime, but also to strength the friendship with the Soviet Union and the Stalinist way of dictatorship. But these man had no connection with this crime and they had no connection with each other.

Book Albania and Europe in a Political Regard

Download or read book Albania and Europe in a Political Regard written by Klodiana Beshku and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2013-09-11 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Albania and Europe in a Political Regard is a multidisciplinary work which aims to develop different points of view in the field of social sciences. In this sense, it is not by chance that the chapters cover a variety of different disciplines like history, sociology, political science and philosophy. These chapters stand alone and, at the same time, create a whole network of relationships between Albania and Europe. An important element of this work is its multidimensional considerations of Europe; it is conceptualised on a number of different levels throughout the chapters, sometimes as a continent, sometimes as an organization, and other times as a leader. In some chapters, Europe is understood in terms of European integration or European civilization. In others, Europe is simply the idea of the continent and its reflections in the Albanian society. The main axis that drives the chapters is the idea of Albania in relation to Europe – how this relationship is understood, how it has worked in the past, and how it works today. The idea of Europe in this book is conceptualised and explored in a number of different ways, from the idea of “European modernity” to a “soft power”, from a “construction of identity” to a “model of behaviour”, according to each author’s varied point of view and discipline of studies. All the nine chapters in this volume utilise different ways of thinking and approaches, but are all connected by a common axis, that is, Albania and Europe in a Political Regard.

Book Social Policy and International Interventions in South East Europe

Download or read book Social Policy and International Interventions in South East Europe written by Bob Deacon and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social Policy and International Interventions in South East Europe proves a comprehensive, dense, and thought provoking read, particularly successful in framing both the historical and institutional contexts of the countries examined, as well as literary debates on the subject and is thus a precious resource. . . Irene Dioli, Journal of Southeastern Europe The questions broached by the volume are of interest to all who are concerned with development and politics. Experts will find the data and is presentation quite useful; others will benefit from the background information presented in each chapter. . . . Social Policy and International Interventions in South East Europe is an excellent addition to the academic literature and will serve all those who are trying to keep pace with fluid developments in the transitional states of south east Europe. Richard P. Farkas, Slavic Review This is a remarkably rich and thought-provoking collection. Its substantial case studies make it a vital resource for studying social policy in South East Europe. Its focus on the flows of international actors, agencies, ideas and resources poses critical questions about how the emergence of social policy, the emergence of new forms of governance and the creation of new spaces of welfare are connected. The implications of this concern with emergent forms and directions reach far beyond the region itself. John Clarke, The Open University, UK A brilliant book that shows conclusively that transnational actors have taken their place alongside states in setting social policy in Europe. Through careful and comprehensive case studies of a wide range of South East European countries, this volume systematically presents a wealth of new data on transnational actor interventions. It helps to shape an emerging debate on the relative power of transnational and domestic actors and makes a unique empirical contribution to the discussion. The authors have done an amazing job of coordinated digging and produced some impressive results. Mitchell Orenstein, Johns Hopkins University, US This comprehensive and engaging book investigates the role of international actors in the making of social policy in South East Europe. Introductory chapters on transnationalism and Europeanization are followed by a series of nine linked case studies depicting research undertaken within this region. The book charts the variable influence that international actors such as formal organizations, non-governmental organizations, consulting companies and individual transnational policy entrepreneurs have on key policy issues, including pensions, social protection, labour markets and health. The authors conclude that welfare settlements are a complex product of historical and institutional legacies, the neo-liberal interventions of the World Bank, the emerging impact of the EU, and the crowded international arena resulting from war and post-war reconstruction agendas. Written by leading researchers in the field, Social Policy and International Interventions in South East Europe will be of great interest to researchers and students of social policy, policy studies and regional studies, as well as policymakers within international and governmental organizations.

Book excerpt: Stalinism, that particularly brutal phase of the Communist experience, came to an end in most of Europe with the death of Stalin in 1953. However, in one country - Albania - Stalinism survived virtually unscathed until 1990. The regime that the Albanian dictator Enver Hoxha led from 1944 until his death in 1985 was incomparably severe. Such was the reign of terror that no audible voice of opposition or dissent ever arose in the Balkan state and Albania became isolated from the rest of the world and utterly inward-looking. Three decades after his death, the spectre of Hoxha still lingers over the country, yet many people – inside and outside Albania – know little about the man who ruled the country with an iron fist for so many decades. This book provides the first biography of Hoxha available in English. Using unseen documents and first-hand interviews, journalist Blendi Fevziu pieces together the life of a tyrannical ruler in a biography which will be essential reading for anyone interested in Balkan history and communist studies

Book excerpt: This is the first full account of a country that, following decades of isolation, has undergone unprecedented changes to its political system: the collapse of communism, the progression to multi-party elections and the upheaval that followed the March 1997 uprising. Miranda Vickers traces the history of the Albanian people from the Ottoman period to the formation of the Albanian Communist Party. She considers the charismatic leadership of Enver Hoxha; Albania's relationship with Tito and the alliance with the Soviet Union and then China; and the long period of isolation. Newly revised for this paperback edition, The Albanians considers the gradual process of reform and the fragility of the Albanian experiment with democracy, and includes a dramatic account of the days leading up to Sali Berisha's resignation of the presidency. It has now been updated to cover the fight for independence in Kosovo and the progress of Albania's application to join the EU.
