Book excerpt: Tipu Sultan is one of the most controversial figures in Indian history. One school hails him as a valiant warrior who fought for his honour and for his country; another describes him as a ruthless and bigoted ruler. Recent researches show that Tipu was more sinned against than sinning . As B.S Gidwani points out, Tipu was the only ruler in the eighteenth century who did not side with the English at any time in a war against his fellow countrymen. Had Tipu succeeded in forming a united front with the support of the Nizam and the Marathas, the British would not have enslaved the country as easily as they did. The fall of Tipu paved the way for British supremacy in India. Even Nana Phadnavis, a bitter opponent of Tipu, acknowledged his vital role. Tipu is finished, he remarked, Poona wll now be the next victim. Evil days are ahead. There seems to be no escape from destiny. In preparing this script the works of M.H.Khan, Denys Forrest, Fazal Hasan and T.T.Sharma have been consulted. The incidents included on pages 8,9,16 and 17 are based on B.S.Gidwani's The Sword of Tipu Sultan , published by Allied Publishers Ltd., New Delhi.

Book TipuSultan The Tyrant of Mysore

Download or read book TipuSultan The Tyrant of Mysore written by Sandeep Balakrishna and published by RARE Publications. This book was released on 2015-01-28 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is part of a series of books aimed at disseminating the accurate history of India drawn from the primary sources. History writing, especially about the medieval Muslim rule has been fraught with political correctness, controversy, and in several cases, downright falsification. This has occurred mostly with official state patronage. As a result, any attempts to correct this course has been virulently opposed with the result that most urban-educated Indians have now internalized a politically correct version of Indian history. The history of Tipu Sultan too, stands as a glaring instance of this distorted historical narrative. Indeed, we have seen, read, and heard about a lot of people claiming to be freedom fighters and receiving pensions from the Government. Several of these worthies would not have been born before Independence yet they succeed in such blatant manipulations. There are instances of portraying certain rulers and chieftains as true heroes who fought against the British Empire. One such ruler happens to be Tipu Sultan. Tipu Sultan is widely known as the Tiger of Mysore. Indeed, the image of Tipu battling a tiger barehanded crosses the mind whenever his name is mentioned. But is this the truth? Was Tipu Sultan truly the warrior as he has been portrayed? What exactly is his record of fighting the British? Was he really a freedom fighter as is widely claimed? Sandeep Balakrishna in this well-researched book, explores both the myths and the truth surrounding Tipu Sultan. A must-read for those who wish to learn the true story of Tipu Sultan.

Book excerpt: What's so special about Tipu Sultan? In this new, compelling book from author Odell Chavez, find out more about Tipu Sultan ...Tipu Sultan, also known as the Tiger of Mysore, was the de facto ruler of the Kingdom of Mysore. He was the son of Hyder Ali, at that time an officer in the Mysorean army, and his second wife, Fatima or Fakhr-un-Nissa. He was given a number of honorific titles, and was referred to as Sultan Fateh Ali Khan Shahab, Tipu Saheb, Bahadur Khan Tipu Sultan or Fatih Ali Khan Tipu Sultan Bahadur.During Tipu's childhood, his father rose to take power in Mysore, and Tipu took over rule of the kingdom upon his father's death. In addition to his role as ruler, he was a scholar, soldier, and poet. He was a devout Muslim but the majority of his subjects were Hindus. At the request of the French, he built a church, the first in Mysore. He was proficient in many languages. In alliance with the French in their struggle with the British, and in Mysore's struggles with other surrounding powers, both Tipu Sultan and Hyder Ali used their French trained army against the Marathas, Sira, rulers of Malabar, Coorg, Bednur, Carnatic, and Travancore. He won important victories against the British in the Second Anglo-Mysore War, and negotiated the 1784 Treaty of Mangalore with them after his father died the previous year.He engaged in expansionist attacks against his neighbours, and harshly put down rebellions within his territories, deporting whole populations into confinement in Seringapatam. He remained an implacable enemy of the British, bringing them into renewed conflict with an attack on British-allied Travancore in 1789. In the Third Anglo-Mysore War Tipu was forced into a humiliating peace, losing a number of previously conquered territories, such as Malabar and Mangalore. He sent embassies to foreign states, including the Ottoman Empire and France, in an attempt to rally opposition to the British. In the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War the combined forces of the British East India Company and the Nizam of Hyderabad defeated Tipu and he was killed on 4 May 1799, defending the fort of Seringapatam.Tipu's treatment of conquered subjects, non-Muslims, and prisoners of war, was controversial, and continues to be a subject of debate. He introduced a number of administrative and military innovations to Mysore, and introduced and promoted a more widespread use of Persian and Urdu languages in southern India. So, what seperates this book from the rest?A comprehensive narrative of Tipu Sultan, this book gives a full understanding of the subject.A brief guide of subject areas covered in "1750 Births - Tipu Sultan" include -- Tipu Sultan- Second Anglo-Mysore War- Third Anglo-Mysore War- Franco-Indian alliances- Fourth Anglo-Mysore War- Mysorean rockets- Mysorean invasion of Kerala- Captivity of Coorgis at Seringapatam- Captivity of Nairs at Seringapatam- Captivity of Mangalorean Catholics at SeringapatamFind out more of this subject, it's intricacies and it's nuances.
