Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solid state gas sensors have proved to be very promising for monitoring the emission of air pollutant and toxic gases because they are a low cost element. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is metal oxide semiconductor.TiO2 has been extensively studied owing to its wide range of applications which include photo catalysis, heterogeneous catalysis, energy storage, solar cell components, corrosion-protective coatings, optical coatings and gas sensing. The objectives of this project was to study the structural, electrical and gas sensing properties of undoped and doped TiO2 thick films.Gas sensing properties of the films were studied in static gas sensing system by exposing the films to the different gases as CO2, H2S, NH3,Ethanol, LPG and NO2 at different operating temperatures. The optimum operating temperature, sensitivity, selectivity, response, recovery time and the active region of detected gas were determined. Results showed that the doping alters the orientation of microstructure, grain size, composition, electrical and gas sensing characteristics.TiO2 films were observed to be most sensitive to reducing gases than oxidizing gases.

Book Novel Strategies for Design of High Temperature Titania based Gas Sensors for Combustion Process Monitoring

This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: TiO2 -based sensors were developed and characterized for improvement of selectivity and sensitivity towards CO gas at high temperatures. Selectivity was improved by combining several sensors into an array, while sensitivity improvement was studied by examination of the effects of various metal and metal oxide additives and reactive sputtering film preparation. TiO2-based sensors containing La2O3 and La2O3/CuO were combined into an array for testing of CO and O2 gas mixtures. Nonlinear regression analysis was developed to determine the concentrations of gases in the mixture. The regression technique can be used to determine the prediction ability of gas sensor combinations for given gas concentration ranges using a defined orthogonality index, as well as to determine the amount of each gas in the mixture based on the responses of a set of sensors. The prediction ability for a La2O3-containing sensor combined with La2O3/CuO-containing sensors with varying levels of CuO are compared for a range of CO and O2 concentrations. Concentrations of CO and O2 in gas mixtures are predicted using the La2O3- and La2O3/CuO-containing sensors and the regression analysis. Addition of various metals and metal oxides, including Au, CuO and La2O3 to TiO2-based gas sensors has been examined to determine the effect of additives on the gas-surface reactivity and electrical response of the sensors. Electrical measurements show that sensor sensitivity is decreased upon addition of La2O3 with only a slight increase in sensitivity when CuO is added to La2O3-containing sensors. Au, however, was found to increase the sensitivity of the TiO2-based sensors with and without La2O3. Gas chromatography was used to determine the catalytic conversion of CO for the various sensor materials at different temperatures for comparison with electrical measurements. General guidelines for additive selection have been proposed based on the results. Reactively sputtered thin film TiO2 gas sensors have been fabricated and characterized for improved sensitivity to CO gas. Sensitivity of optimized thin film sensors to CO was found to be much higher than for traditional thick film TiO2-based sensors. Characterization of the phase and morphology of the sensors using XRD, TEM and AFM show that the film consists of a dense layer of TiO2 in the rutile phase, with surface roughness changing with film thickness. Sensitivity of the thin film sensor could be varied by changing the film thickness, with a film thickness of 240 nm showing the best sensitivity to CO gas, although response and recovery times were slow.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There were two reasons that induced me to plan and to organize this book, the first was the lack of a text entirely devoted to the subject of gas sensors, notwithstanding some books devoted to the various kind of chemical sensors have recently been published. The second reason was the need of introducing the basic topics of gas detection mechanisms to a growing number of researchers active in research and development laboratories of industries and uni versities. The field of chemical sensors is indeed in fast and consistent growth, as it is proved by the increased number of participants to the congresses that were recently held on this subject, namely the Third Meeting on Chemical Sensors (September 24 - 26, 1990, Cleveland), Transducers' 91 (June 24 - 27, 1991, S. Francisco) and EUROSENSORS V (September 30 - October 3, 1991, Rome). Therefore, this book is mainly intended as a reference text for researchers with a MS degree in physics, chemistry and electrical engineering; it reports the last progresses in the R. & D. and in the technology of gas sensors. I choose to deal specifically with the topic of gas sensors because these devices show a very large number of applications in the domestic and industrial field and they are characterized by a great effort of research and development.

Book TiO2 Thin Films Produced by Ultrasonic Agitation Assisted Sol Gel for Propane Gas Sensor

Download or read book TiO2 Thin Films Produced by Ultrasonic Agitation Assisted Sol Gel for Propane Gas Sensor written by Dwight Acosta-Najarro and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TiO2 films were deposited by the sol,Äìgel dip coating method assisted by ultra sonic agitation, for their use as propane gas sensors. XRD anlaysis revealed the TiO2 anatase phase for all samples. The film thickness was controlled with the number of the dip-coating immersion cycles, obtaining thicknesses from 10 to 130¬†nm and a growing rate of 18¬†nm per immersion. Surface morphology shows that films grow more compact and densely packed as the number of immersion cycles increase. Gas sensing studies indicate that work temperatures above 300¬∞C are needed for sensing activation of the films. Gas sensors sensitivity as a function of propane concentration and film thickness revealed a two-regime behavior: for partial pressures of propane above 400¬†ppm the sensitivity is not dependent of the film thickness, whereas it is dependent on this parameter at lower partial pressures. Such behavior is attributed to a space charge region and a change in surface structure. For the low concentration regime, the maximum sensitivity was obtained for a film thickness of 110¬†nm or 5 inmersions.

Book Science and Technology of Chemiresistor Gas Sensors

Download or read book Science and Technology of Chemiresistor Gas Sensors written by Dinesh K. Aswal and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gas sensor technology has advanced remarkably during past few decades and has become one of the indispensable technologies for modern society. Varieties of gas sensors are commercially available and, using innovative ideas, efforts are being made to develop gas sensors of next generation having very small size with very low power consumption. The ultimate model for this is probably given by sensory organs of our own body, which are implanted finely and work well with a very modest amount of energy. In order to achieve this goal, it is essential that various aspects of gas sensors are seriously considered. These include understanding of gas sensing mechanisms, development of new materials and methods to synthesise them into selective sensors, innovations in nanostructured materials, measurement methods, microfabrication of sensors, exploring intelligent sensing system, etc. This book examines these issues pertaining to chemiresistive gas sensors.
