Book Shakespeare s Tragedy of Timon of Athens

Download or read book Shakespeare s Tragedy of Timon of Athens written by William J. Rolfe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare's Tragedy of Timon of Athens Timon of Athens is an interesting study for the critical scholar from the fact that it is not wholly Shakespeare's. In the Introduction to the play I have given the various theories concerning its history, and have ventured to add a hypothesis of my own, which differs in some minor points from any of the rest. The division of the text between the two authors is a simpler question, and the critics arc generally agreed as to which are the Shakespearian and which the non-Shakespearian portions. The latter I have printed in smaller type, as recommended by Mr. Furnivall. As the play is in no wise suitable either for school use or fur social reading, the text is given without "expurgation." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Timon of Athens is a bitterly intriguing study of a fabulously rich man who wastes his wealth on his friends, and, when he is finally impoverished, learns to despise humanity with a hatred that drives him to his grave. The play's plot structure is schematically clear, and the poetry of Timon's rage is arresting in its savage intensity. Yet readers have often detected loose ends, and the tone of writing is uneven.

  • Pages : 166 pages

Download or read book Timon of Athens written by William Shakespeare and published by . This book was released on 1928 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Timon of Athens" has struck many readers as rough and unpolished, perhaps even unfinished, though to others it has appeared as Shakespeare's most profound tragic allegory. The editors provide detailed annotation of the text and explore the wide range of critical and theatrical interpretations that the play has engendered. Tracing both its satirical and tragic strains, their introduction presents a perspective on the play's meanings that combines careful elucidation of historical context with analysis of its relevance to modern-day society. An extensive and well-illustrated account of the play's production history generates a rich sense of how the play can speak to different historical moments in specific and rewarding ways.
