The fictitious and non-fictitious characters heard a saying of, spoke with, or encountered Jesus in some way—Roman soldiers, religious leaders, farmers, innkeepers, prisoners, prostitutes, disciples, the serpent, philosophers, Judas Iscariot, and many others. Some hate Jesus, some love him, some are ambivalent, some are mystified, some are atheists, some are fanatics, etc. The story of one character interacts with the stories of other characters. Even as they rub shoulders with each other, they often stumble into timeless truth and the teachings of Jesus.

Book Landscape of a Mind

Download or read book Landscape of a Mind written by Tohon and published by New Generation Publishing. This book was released on 2015-05-28 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A torrent's course does not depend on the water; it is latent in the mountain's topography. What controls a man's destiny?' 'There is no virtue without vice, just as there is no gold without impurity. Therefore, when one acquires a virtue, does one not also acquire a vice too?' Such are the musings and reflections in The Landscape of a Mind. In this profoundly introspective collection of thoughts, gathered in journal entries and correspondence with friends, Tohon questions the essence of human nature, the obscure workings of the human mind and the heart, and mulls over the meaning of good and evil, the implications of the self and ego, and the concepts of free will and choice, destiny and fate. A considerable amount of ground to cover, but Tohon's personalised and conversational tone, as well as his use of an approach that is very much rooted in the Eastern philosophies, makes this piece an enjoyable exchange of thoughts, ideas and beliefs between humanists and philosophers on a very much global level.

Download or read book Do You Think You Will Ever Go Back written by Lane Robson and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2019-05-31 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From hikers encountering grizzly bears to doctors in makeshift Haitian hospitals, the characters in Do You Think You’ll Ever Go Back? are full of curiosity and persistence. Many of these stories follow doctors at various points in their careers, offering a glimpse into tensions and personal dynamics of medical professionals, especially in life-or-death situations. As the sole practitioner in a remote First Nations community, an inexperienced resident finds himself in a tense and life-threatening situation when he accompanies an unconscious man being airlifted to Winnipeg; a doctor tries to save an elderly woman’s life while her husband looks on, and later questions his profession’s fixation with saving lives at all costs; when a doctor practicing in the United Arab Emirates is summoned to attended to a young sheikh, he tries to navigate the demanding culture and privilege of a private medical system. At times, these stories are as piercing as they are compassionate. A man is attacked in a laundromat and realizes the system has failed both him and his attacker; volunteering for bird banding in the wilderness, an enthusiastic birder joins a reclusive stranger in the bush and witnesses the steady decline of a man in withdrawal; a man attends to his dying aunt and discovers the various forms of denial and grief in his family. With nearly fifty stories, this collection strives to understand human nature. Do You Think You’ll Ever Go Back? is as generous as it is thoughtful—a must-read for anyone interested in the subtleties of the human condition.

Download or read book Fierce written by Hannah Holborn and published by Emblem Editions. This book was released on 2010-04-30 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fresh, tough, and thoroughly addictive, this sparkling debut collection calls to mind the beloved and bestselling works of Lisa Moore, Camilla Gibb, and Mark Haddon. With an irresistible combination of playfulness and empathy, these effervescent, sometimes heartbreaking tales of underachieving adults, unfairly burdened children, and the unaccountably hopeful of all ages explore the moments of grace in lives that are too often defined by loss. A punky young woman comes to terms with the accident that took away all of her family except the grandmother who believes she is a bird, and an aging prospector — a woman — discovers that a physical “curse” might have been something of a blessing all along. “The Indian Act” is a compact coming-of-age story, charting the journey of a boy who, though bounced through many foster homes, holds on to the dream of love and unconditional acceptance; and in the novella “River Rising,” three generations in a small town struggle toward joy despite the accidents of fate and the foolish mistakes that almost, but not quite, derail their lives. Fierce introduces Hannah Holborn as a shining new light in Canadian fiction. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Book Concept Progress

    Book Details:
  • Author : Leo Indman
  • Publisher : Leo Indman
  • Release : 2017-04-22
  • ISBN : 0998828947
  • Pages : 278 pages

Download or read book Concept Progress written by Leo Indman and published by Leo Indman. This book was released on 2017-04-22 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concept Progress is a fusion of science fiction and philosophy. It is a metaphysics that centers on progress being a driving force in human evolution. This recurring viewpoint has previously stirred much debate. However, as we escalate through the 21st century, the evidence is plentiful. Concept Progress offers a fresh perspective into the topic, citing humanity's ongoing accomplishments as a convincing piece of that evidence. In the book, we celebrate ourselves for our achievements, challenge our perceived limits, and conclude that progress will eventually produce the most evolved life form. In so doing, we look back to the beginning of time and circle forward to a time that is farther away than the current age of the universe. While the tone of the book's body resembles that of a philosophical prose, with each chapter, the reader realizes more and more that the narrative is actually one of science fiction. The intent of the book's structure and approach is manifold. First, it is safe to say that any literature that points to the future is already, by definition, a work of fiction—no matter how serious it tries to sound. Imagining future technologies, foreseeing the next stages of human evolution, and exploring the realm of the highest dimension surely makes it a science fiction. Second, the book is a collection of concepts—abstract notions of the mind that reflect our grasp on certain aspects of reality. It is also a play on those concepts, exposing how our progressive understanding of these notions can gradually be transcended. Each chapter starts with a sketch of a particular concept whose humanistic yet quantum mechanical context lets us identify with it and be mystified by it. From the concepts of sound and light to the concepts of consciousness and coexistence, each concept tale depicts a personal expression of our mutual worldview. Third, each one of the ten chapters concludes with a short sci-fi story. These stories project the theme further and subtly point to each other. As we connect the dots from one story to another, the outline reveals a world that makes us wonder whether we are headed toward its future or whether we will bypass it as an alternate universe. In one story, we meet the inventor of mind-reading technology while in another story, we meet an artificial life form that will be made possible by this technology. Yet another story is about the time-traveling mind of an astrophysicist whose life's work has impacts on whole timelines, as revealed by a different story. In the end, it all comes together with the final piece of the puzzle completing not only the short story series, but also the novel as a whole. Each three-part chapter is a triad with a distinct purpose in mind. We begin the journey with our own curiosity. This basic emotion allows us to open the door to that which we are so curiously seeking. Essentially, that covers everything. In questioning the entirety of existence, we commence with the premise that it is the element of life that sends us on a quest for meaning. So we review the trend of life's evolution on Earth from its roots to the present day and follow this trend into the distant future. The process of evolutionary development leads us to a recipe for one's own personal progress, which is comprised of physical, mental, and spiritual ingredients. It soon becomes clear that a species can change only insofar as its individual members embrace this change. And we realize that our choice in the matter has impacts not only on our own future, but also on the future of everyone who shares our timeline. In some ways, Concept Progress is a modern commentary of Charles Darwin's revolutionary theory of evolution. In other ways, it is an encouraging observation of our humble human existence. As we widen the time scale and follow an evolutionary trend from biological, social, and cosmic angles, the concepts of evolution and progress slowly but surely become synonymous.

Book Robert F Kennedy Ripples of Hope

Download or read book Robert F Kennedy Ripples of Hope written by Kerry Kennedy and published by Center Street. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The daughter of Robert F. Kennedy shares personal remembrances of her father and through conversations with politicians, media personalities, celebrities and leaders, explores the influence that he continues to have on the issues at the heart of America's identity. Robert F. Kennedy staunchly advocated for civil rights, education, justice, and peace; his message transcended race, class, and creed, resonating deeply within and across America. He was the leading candidate for the Democratic nomination for the presidency and was expected to run against Republican Richard Nixon in the 1968 presidential election, following in the footsteps of his late brother John. After winning the California presidential primary on June 5, 1968, Robert Kennedy was shot, and he died the following day. He was forty-two. Fifty years later, Robert Kennedy's passions and concerns and the issues he championed are -- for better and worse-still so relevant. Ripples of Hope explores Kennedy's influence on issues at the heart of America's identity today, including moral courage, economic and social justice, the role of government, international relations, youth, violence, and support for minority groups, among other salient topics. Ripples of Hope captures the legacy of former senator and U.S. attorney general Robert F. Kennedy through commentary from his daughter, as well as interviews with dozens of prominent national and international figures who have been inspired by him. They include Barack Obama, John Lewis, Marian Wright Edelman, Alfre Woodard, Harry Belafonte, Bono, George Clooney, Gloria Steinem, and more. They share personal accounts and stories of how Kennedy's words, life, and values have influenced their lives, choices, and actions. Through these interviews, Kerry Kennedy aims to enlighten people anew about her father's legacy and bring to life RFK's values and passions, using as milestones the end of his last campaign and a life that was cut off much too soon. Thurston Clarke provides a powerful foreword to the book with his previous reporting on RFK's funeral train.

Book A Fire Runs through All Things

Download or read book A Fire Runs through All Things written by Susan Murphy and published by Shambhala Publications. This book was released on 2023-11-28 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time of climate emergency, Zen koans show us how crisis itself can reveal the regenerative openness of life, mind, and being. Zen koans are a tradition of holistic inquiry based on “encounter stories” from East Asia’s most radical Buddhist tradition. Turning this form of inquiry toward the climate crisis, Susan Murphy contends that koans can help us enter the mind of not-knowing, from which acceptance and possibility freely emerge. Koans reveal intimate, mythic, artful, playful, provocative, humorous, and fierce ways to engage the work of protecting and healing our world. The koans point firstly at ourselves—at the very nature of "self." Until we hold “self” as a live question rather than its own unquestioned answer, we’re stuck looking on from the “outside,” hoping to engineer change upon a problem called “climate crisis,” all the time oblivious to the fact that we’re swimming in a reality with no outside to it, an ocean of transformative energy. Do we dare relinquish our wish for absolute control and fearlessly surf the intensity of our feelings about the suffering earth? In addition to her use of dozens of traditional and new koans, Murphy illuminates the little-known Zen resonance with the oldest continuous body of indigenous wisdom on earth, summed up in the subtle Australian Aboriginal word Country. Murphy draws from her study and coteaching with Uncle Max (Dulumunmun) Harrison, a distinguished Yuin Elder, to show how this millennia-deep taproot of intelligence confirms the aliveness of the earth and the kinship of all beings.
