Book An Analysis of Time shared Computer Systems

Download or read book An Analysis of Time shared Computer Systems written by Allan L. Scherr and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some of the aspects of the operation of time-shared, interactive computer systems are analyzed. The emphasis is on the reaction of hardware systems to the demands that its users make upon it. Simply stated, the problem is to characterize both time-shared systems and their users in order to be able to predict the performance of the two operating together. Portions of this problem include the specification and measurement of user characteristics, the development and verification of both simulation and mathematical models for time-shared systems, and the specification and measurement of performance matrics for such systems. The user and some of the performance measurements were made on Project MAC's Compatible Time-Sharing System (CTSS). (Author).

Book Use of a Time shared Computer System to Control a Hall Effect Experiment

Download or read book Use of a Time shared Computer System to Control a Hall Effect Experiment written by United States. National Bureau of Standards and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental time-shared computer system has been used to control and collect data from a Hall effect experiment. In addition to selection of the voltage sequence and control of specimen current and magnetic flux directions, the computer exerts positive control over the specimen temperature in accordance with a series of thermocouple voltages entered by the operator at the beginning of the run. The interface circuitry is constructed from four general purpose modules and a single special purpose unit. Details of the interface system and the programs used to control the experiment and to perform intermediate calculations are given. It was found that the time-shared system was well-suited to control an experiment of this type. The demands on the computer were essentially similar to those required by a human user interacting in a conversational mode. Substantial savings in time over manual data collection and reduction were realized; a temperature run with 38 to 40 data points between 10 and 320 K could be completed in less than 4 hours.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume describes General Electric Corporation’s venture into developing second and third generation mainframe computer systems. The General Electric Corporation (GE), which began its life as the Edison Electric Co., was long involved in electrical appliances and industrial machines. It was also a founder of the Radio Corporation of America, which eventually became one of its competitors, and developed many electrical systems in order to control different types of industrial machines. Its breakthrough into computing came with its winning bid to provide the computing systems for the Electronic Recording Method of Accounting) system developed for the Bank of America by the Stanford Research Institute. The success of this project led GE to develop the GE-200 series which was the foundation for commercial timesharing. The GE-235 was selected by Dartmouth for its Dartmouth Time Sharing System (DTSS), an innovative academic time-sharing system. BASIC was developed on the GE-235 computer system under DTSS. GE enhanced it to develop its Mark II/III Time Sharing System, apparently the first commercial time sharing service in the world. GE develop the GE-300/-400 systems for industrial process control. The GE-600 series replaced the GE-200 series and demonstrated innovation in time-sharing systems. The GE-645 was selected to host Multics, which was developed by MIT. However, GE felt that it could not compete in computing against IBM, Univac, and other mainframes competitors, so it folded its tent and sold its Computer Division to Honeywell, Inc. Nevertheless, GE will be remembered for many innovations which continue to be used in modern computing systems.

Book Computer System Architecture

Download or read book Computer System Architecture written by P. V. S. RAO and published by PHI Learning Pvt. Ltd.. This book was released on 2008-12-30 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intended as a text for undergraduate and postgraduate students of engineering in Computer Science and Engineering, Information Technology, and students pursuing courses in computer applications (BCA/MCA) and computer science (B.Sc./M.Sc.), this state-of-the-art study acquaints the students with concepts and implementations in computer architectures. Though a new title, it is a completely reorganized, thoroughly revised and fully updated version of the author’s earlier book Perspectives in Computer Architecture. The text begins with a brief account of the very early history of computers and describes the von Neumann IAS type of computers; then it goes on to give a brief introduction to the subsequent advances in computer systems covering device technologies, operational aspects, system organization and applications. This is followed by an analysis of the advances and innovations that have taken place in these areas. Advanced concepts such as look-ahead, pipelining, RISC architectures, and multi-programming are fully analyzed. The text concludes with a discussion on such topical subjects as computer networks, microprocessors and microcomputers, microprocessor families, Intel Pentium series, and newer high-power processors. HALLMARKS OF THE BOOK The text fully reflects Professor P.V.S. Rao’s long experience as an eminent academic and his professional experience as an adviser to leading telecommunications/software companies. Gives a systematic account of the evolution of computers Provides a large number of exercises to drill the students in self-study. The five Appendices at the end of the text, cover the basic concepts to enable the students to have a better understanding of the subject. Besides students, practising engineers should also find this book to be of immense value to them.

Book excerpt: Over the past two decades, there has been a huge amount of innovation in both the principles and practice of operating systems Over the same period, the core ideas in a modern operating system - protection, concurrency, virtualization, resource allocation, and reliable storage - have become widely applied throughout computer science. Whether you get a job at Facebook, Google, Microsoft, or any other leading-edge technology company, it is impossible to build resilient, secure, and flexible computer systems without the ability to apply operating systems concepts in a variety of settings. This book examines the both the principles and practice of modern operating systems, taking important, high-level concepts all the way down to the level of working code. Because operating systems concepts are among the most difficult in computer science, this top to bottom approach is the only way to really understand and master this important material.
