Book Porous Silicon

Download or read book Porous Silicon written by Zhe Chuan Feng and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1994-10-10 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to the recent discovery of the room-temperature visible light emission from porous silicon (P-Si), a great interest in P-Si and related materials has arisen in the last decade of the 20th century. Crystalline (c-) Si, at the heart of integrated circuits, has an indirect band gap of 1.1 eV, which limits its application in optoelectronics. The visible light emitting P-Si may open a new field combining Si integrated technology and optoelectronics. This book is a comprehensive review of the recent research and development of porous silicon. Strong visible photoluminescence (PL) and electroluminescence (EL) from P-Si and other forms of silicon nanocrystallites (nc-Si) are reviewed. Several proposed mechanisms for the PL from porous silicon such as quantum confinement, amorphicity and molecular PL are studied. The following issues are covered: mechanisms for the visible light emission, physical structures, studies of the PL and EL, correlation of structure and optical studies, surface physics and chemistry, relationships among various forms (P-Si, a-Si, µc-Si), device applications, future developments.

Book Spectrophotometry and Spectrofluorimetry

Download or read book Spectrophotometry and Spectrofluorimetry written by Mike Gore and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2000-05-04 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spectrophotometry and Spectrofluorimetry: A Practical Approach Second Edition was written with the intention to help the reader understand the background concepts and practical applications of spectrophotometry and spectrofluorimetry. Optical spectroscopy underpins the day to day operations of most laboratories in the chemical, biological and medical sciences and this edition contains substantially updated and new chapters addressing the principles of most of the more common applications such as: spectrophotometry, spectrophotometric assays, spectrofluorimetry, time resolved fluorescence and phosphorescence studies, circular dichrosim and pre-equilibrium spectroscopic techniques. In all chapters, the emphasis is placed upon the practical aspects, with protocols to guide readers through test experiments. Other chapters are included to introduce subjects that have traditionally depended upon spectroscopy such as basic enzyme kinetics, ligand binding, data handling and the more recently established interest in the study of protein and DNA stability. Finally, the concept of 'global analysis' is introduced to provide the reader with an insight into this method of utilizing the vast arrays of experimental data provided by current instrumentation.

Book Principles of Fluorescence Spectroscopy

Download or read book Principles of Fluorescence Spectroscopy written by Joseph R. Lakowicz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluorescence methods are being used increasingly in biochemical, medical, and chemical research. This is because of the inherent sensitivity of this technique. and the favorable time scale of the phenomenon of fluorescence. 8 Fluorescence emission occurs about 10- sec (10 nsec) after light absorp tion. During this period of time a wide range of molecular processes can occur, and these can effect the spectral characteristics of the fluorescent compound. This combination of sensitivity and a favorable time scale allows fluorescence methods to be generally useful for studies of proteins and membranes and their interactions with other macromolecules. This book describes the fundamental aspects of fluorescence. and the biochemical applications of this methodology. Each chapter starts with the -theoreticalbasis of each phenomenon of fluorescence, followed by examples which illustrate the use of the phenomenon in the study of biochemical problems. The book contains numerous figures. It is felt that such graphical presentations contribute to pleasurable reading and increased understand ing. Separate chapters are devoted to fluorescence polarization, lifetimes, quenching, energy transfer, solvent effects, and excited state reactions. To enhance the usefulness of this work as a textbook, problems are included which illustrate the concepts described in each chapter. Furthermore, a separate chapter is devoted to the instrumentation used in fluorescence spectroscopy. This chapter will be especially valuable for those perform ing or contemplating fluorescence measurements. Such measurements are easily compromised by failure to consider a number of simple principles.
