Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focused on the myths and mythologies of European cultural history, this volume seeks to address the present and past functions of foundation texts in the evolution of the European idea. One of the specific objectives of this volume is to reconsider, in the context of ongoing European expansion and integration, the functionalist approach of Benedict Anderson, according to whom "imagined communities . . . are to be distinguished, not by their falsity/genuineness, but by the style in which they are imagined." The common denominator of each of the essays contained in this volume is the problem of the discontinuity of time in relation to tradition, cultural and individual memory, as well as in relation to historical and literary narratives. Time becomes "the locus of its own reflexivity: it is self-temporalized. It undergoes endless reiteration within itself, and needs a semantics which sets valid accents for specific moments." (Jean Bessiere)

Book Refiguring Identity in Corporate Times

Download or read book Refiguring Identity in Corporate Times written by David Vella and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2023-04-01 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Refiguring Identity in Corporate Times is aimed as a response to the narcissistic life-strategies promoted by the marketplace. It introduces an identity model that ensures a more inclusive, ethical, and authentic way of living ones own life-script. We live in a culture that requires us to create our own self-interpretation. Claiming to assist us in this mission are self-professed experts and the public media that offer life-strategies for adoption, to which it is all too easy to conform to in hyper-capitalized and consumerist societies. Among the most popular are fashion, entrepreneurship, travel, fitness, and self-spirituality, which are designed by corporate companies for instant appeal and feelgood results, expressing the consumerist religion of hedonistic narcissism and status. The possibility of an alternative identity for todays society that is based on the experience of conscience, sees our self-realization as intimately related to care for others and the advancement of political and civic institutions. To aspire for this identity model is to move from the distorted values of commercial life-strategies to five virtues. The virtues enable us to attune to what is singularly foreign in any experience, signalling ways how our worldview can become more inclusive, ethical, and insightful in its comprehension of existence. This key reading in Identity Studies provides insight into the psychology and behaviour endorsed by consumer culture; charts out a new understanding of virtue ethics; and promotes life-choices that steers consumers away from conformity in its capacity to stimulate the creation of a personal and authentic vision of life that involves others and societal institutions.

Book Politics of Interculturality

Download or read book Politics of Interculturality written by Fred Dervin and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2011-09-22 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Politics of Interculturality fulfills the need for a thorough and critical evaluation of the notion of interculturality. Taking institutional and educational discourses on the ‘intercultural’ as its main focus, the volume captures vigorous debates currently underway across four continents – the Americas, Europe, Asia and Oceania. The volume’s prominent and emerging scholars all agree that change is needed in the way interculturality is used and conceived, especially at a time when the ‘Other’ is an increasing issue of social concerns and political debates. The authors break with tradition by teasing out the hidden assumptions and implications of interculturality – making explicit the implicit presence of the tired old notion of ‘culture’. They also look to establish new ways of engaging with interculturality. The book will be of substantial interest to a wide range of readers who are interested in international communication, education, migration studies, critical race studies, cultural studies, anthropology, linguistics and business. Undergraduates and novice researchers will also find invaluable advice on how to research politics of interculturality.

Book Paul Ricoeur between Theology and Philosophy

Download or read book Paul Ricoeur between Theology and Philosophy written by Boyd Blundell and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2010-05-25 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Ricoeur (1913--2005) remains one of philosophy of religion's most distinctive voices. Ricoeur was a philosopher first, and while his religious reflections are very relevant to theology, Boyd Blundell argues that his philosophy is even more relevant. Using Ricoeur's own philosophical hermeneutics, Blundell shows that there is a way for explicitly Christian theology to maintain both its integrity and overall relevance. He demonstrates how the dominant pattern of detour and return found throughout Ricoeur's work provides a path to understanding the relationship between philosophy and theology. By putting Ricoeur in dialogue with current, fundamental, and longstanding debates about the role of philosophy in theology, Blundell offers a hermeneutically sensitive engagement with Ricoeur's thought from a theological perspective.

Book Refiguring Democracy

Download or read book Refiguring Democracy written by Ramón A. Feenstra and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-06-26 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spain has become a remarkable democratic laboratory in which millions of citizens are experimenting with new forms of political expression. This book examines the dynamics of this political laboratory, showing that the upheavals it is experiencing are likely in the near future to affect democracies elsewhere in the world. Examining the new means of participation that were established in fields where digital communication tools enabled the launch of novel dynamics of political action, the reader will gain access to a comprehensive analysis of the reshaping and mutation process that has affected fields such as activism, political parties and political participation. Using a case study of the Spain between 2011 and 2015, the book focuses on the changes that have taken place in politics and communication in Spain, paying particular attention to the 15M movement and its disruptive, innovative strength in all matters related to politics and communication. The chapters cover political repertoires and the hybridization of horizontal and vertical political logics; the appearance of new political parties; the establishment of monitoring mechanisms as an essential means of political expression and participation; and the subversion of rationality across media as a product of the communication strategies implemented by online political activism. Showing that Spain is not just at the forefront of democratic innovation, but that it is a political laboratory in which trials are taking place that tell us much about the future of democracy everywhere, this book will be of great use to scholars of political theory, democracy and philosophy.
