Book Stochastic Project Networks

Download or read book Stochastic Project Networks written by Klaus Neumann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Project planning, scheduling, and control are regularly used in business and the service sector of an economy to accomplish outcomes with limited resources under critical time constraints. To aid in solving these problems, network-based planning methods have been developed that now exist in a wide variety of forms, cf. Elmaghraby (1977) and Moder et al. (1983). The so-called "classical" project networks, which are used in the network techniques CPM and PERT and which represent acyclic weighted directed graphs, are able to describe only projects whose evolution in time is uniquely specified in advance. Here every event of the project is realized exactly once during a single project execution and it is not possible to return to activities previously carried out (that is, no feedback is permitted). Many practical projects, however, do not meet those conditions. Consider, for example, a production process where some parts produced by a machine may be poorly manufactured. If an inspection shows that a part does not conform to certain specifications, it must be repaired or replaced by a new item. This means that we have to return to a preceding stage of the production process. In other words, there is feedback. Note that the result of the inspection is that a certain percentage of the parts tested do not conform. That is, there is a positive probability (strictly less than 1) that any part is defective.

Book Advances in Project Scheduling

Download or read book Advances in Project Scheduling written by R. Slowinski and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This multi-author volume, containing contributions from international experts in the field, presents recent developments in project scheduling for both theory and practice. It is organized in three parts: I. Basic deterministic models; II. Special deterministic models; III. Stochastic models. A variety of approaches is presented dealing with multiple-category resource constraints, different mathematical models of activities, and various project performance measures in single and multiobjective formulation. Exact and heuristic algorithms are presented for both deterministic and stochastic project description. The volume will be of special interest to scientists, students, decision makers, executive managers, consultants and practitioners involved in systems management or operations research, in particular in business, engineering, and finance, but also in other areas of pure and applied sciences.

Book GERT Networks and the Time Oriented Evaluation of Projects

Download or read book GERT Networks and the Time Oriented Evaluation of Projects written by K. Neumann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Towards the end of the fifties methods for planning, scheduling, and control of proj ects were developed on the basis that the evolution of a project can be associated with a special weighted directed graph, called activity network. In this association, the individual activities of the project correspond to the arcs, the so-called proj ect events (beginning or termination of activities) correspond to the nodes, and the durations of the activities correspond to the weights of the respective arcs of the directed graph. 1) Contiguous arcs are assigned to activities which succeed one another immediately. The event corresponding to a node occurs exactly at the time at which all activities which are associated with the arcs leading into the node are terminated. After the occurrence of an event all those activities are be gun which correspond to the arcs emanating from the respective node. This implies especially that the evolution of the project has to be uniquely determined before hand, that every activity and every event are realized exactly once during the exe cution of the project, and that "feedback" (corresponding to cycles in the asso ciated network) is not permitted. Many projects, for example most R&D projects and projects in the area of production p 1 anni ng, do not sa ti sfy the foregoi ng res tri cti ons.

Book A Stochastic Analysis of Project Management Networks

Download or read book A Stochastic Analysis of Project Management Networks written by Prem Kumar Sehgal and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objective of this thesis is the development of a system of techniques for management planning and the control of major project contracts. The present study treats the probabilistic aspects of planning and proposes an approach to analyse cost/time risk associated with capital project contracts. The techniques developed fall into two classifications: 1. Risk quantification (during planning). 2. Use of quantified risk and information theory in the prediction of the completion time and the cost of the project. The extensive literature relating to management Planning and control techniques is critically reviewed. Simulation models are developed to find the critical indices of activities, and the completion time distribution of the project. Effects of network structure and activity time distribution on critical indices and completion time distributions are investigated. Possible applications of these risk quantification techniques are described. A technique making use of networks and Monte Carlo simulation is suggested for the quantification of risk in project expenditure when activity times are uncertain. These expenditure curves can be used to predict the expenditure for future similar kinds of projects. The risk associated with the uncertainty of completion times is quantified by Monte Carlo simulation and used along with information theory to predict the completion date of a project. Similarly, an algorithm to predict the final cost of a project is proposed. Validation and implementation of developed techniques are discussed and compared with results obtained from analytical techniques for suitably simplified case studies.

Book Management Science Operations Research and Project Management

Download or read book Management Science Operations Research and Project Management written by José Ramón San Cristóbal Mateo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-06 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to its societal and economic relevance, Project Management (PM) has become an important discipline and a concept critical to modern organizations, public and private. PM as an academic discipline is discussed both in Management Science and in Operations Research. Management Science tends to focus on quantitative tools and the soft skills necessary to manage projects successfully. Operations Research gives the essential scientific contribution to the success of project management through the development of models and algorithms. In Management Science, Operations Research and Project Management, José Ramón San Cristóbal Mateo fills the gap between scientific research and the practical application of that research. Project managers need formal training in decision-making but sometimes, they do not have an in-depth knowledge of Operations Research or they lack the necessary theoretical background. This book, with its focus on the quantitative models of Operations Research and Management Science applied to Project Management, provides project managers with the tools and methods necessary to manage projects successfully. Project managers operate in a complex global environment, in which numerous factors need to be considered, such as minimizing total project costs, meeting contracted dates, and ensuring that activities achieve certain quality levels. The focus here on the application of quantitative models of Operations Research and Management Science applied to Project Management provides them with the tools and methods necessary to make sound decisions.

Download or read book Project Scheduling written by Erik Leuven Demeulemeester and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-11 with total page 701 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our objectives in writing Project Scheduling: A Research Handbook are threefold: (1) Provide a unified scheme for classifying the numerous project scheduling problems occurring in practice and studied in the literature; (2) Provide a unified and up-to-date treatment of the state-of-the-art procedures developed for their solution; (3) Alert the reader to various important problems that are still in need of considerable research effort. Project Scheduling: A Research Handbook has been divided into four parts. Part I consists of three chapters on the scope and relevance of project scheduling, on the nature of project scheduling, and finally on the introduction of a unified scheme that will be used in subsequent chapters for the identification and classification of the project scheduling problems studied in this book. Part II focuses on the time analysis of project networks. Part III carries the discussion further into the crucial topic of scheduling under scarce resources. Part IV deals with robust scheduling and stochastic scheduling issues. Numerous tables and figures are used throughout the book to enhance the clarity and effectiveness of the discussions. For the interested and motivated reader, the problems at the end of each chapter should be considered as an integral part of the presentation.
