Book Time Optimal Control of a High dimensional Nonlinear Binary Distillation Column Using the Luus Jaakola Optimization Procedure

Download or read book Time Optimal Control of a High dimensional Nonlinear Binary Distillation Column Using the Luus Jaakola Optimization Procedure written by Manoj Rajagopalan and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dynamic model of a methanol-isopropanol binary distillation column is set up from first principles with the aim of performing a time optimal control study. With 21 stages, the state of each being described by 2 variables, the time optimal control problem is 42 dimensional in its state space, with two control variables: the reflux flowrate and the reboiler heat duty. The model poses many computational challenges in its complex formulation and the nature and number of constraints on the control and the state variables. It is desired to take the system from an initial steady state to a desired steady state in minimum possible time. The Luus-Jaakola (LJ) optimization procedure is used to solve this time optimal control problem using piecewise constant control and flexible time-stage lengths. The complex model is directly used without any simplifications or transformations. In light of the special computational challenges involved, the LJ optimization procedure is found to perform very well: the best result obtained takes the system to within 4.319 * 10-4 (1-norm) of the desired state in 52.494 minutes employing a 6-stage control policy. The large computation time requirements limit experimentation with this model and possible avenues for improvements are identified.

Book Design of Distillation Column Control Systems

Download or read book Design of Distillation Column Control Systems written by P. Buckley and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 1986 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A distillation column is both multivariable and nonlinear - and it consumes immense quantities of energy. Yet, despite the desigh challenges it presents, it is still the most popular unit operation for refining in industrial plants today. Much has been published on the subject of distillation column design, but much remains to be explained. That is why this book is unique. In a departure from the more traditional empirical and theoretical approaches, it introduced the reader to the practical realm, by presenting quantitative design techniques that have been demonstrated to be useful and valid over the course of hundreds of actual applications. The book is divided into three main parts. Part I, an introduction, presents an industrial perspective of control objectives. It discusses briefly the relationship between column design features and column controllability. It thus provides a short refresher course for chemical engineers and background for those trained in other branches of engineering. Part II, Concepts and Configurations, discusses column overhead and base arrangements, typical control schemes, and some hardware considerations. Part III is dedicated to quantitative design. Mathematical models are presented for pressure and differential pressure controls, liquid level control, and composition control of binary distillation. Emphasis on topics of primary interest to the control engineer Essentially nonmathematical treatment Ideal for those involved in troubleshooting existing columns as well to design engineers

Book Distillation Control Optimization and Tuning

Download or read book Distillation Control Optimization and Tuning written by Allison Shatkin and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emphasis on improved quality and performance of distilled products and the demand for reduced operating costs place a heavy burden on both the personnel responsible for profitability and the manufacturing department charged with operating the processing equipment. There have been dramatic improvements in the computer software and hardware used to simulate and model the distillation process and potential response to experimentation, but mastering the art of distillation process and control still requires solid understanding of a large body of information. With a focus on achieving product purity at low cost, Distillation Control, Optimization, and Tuning: Fundamentals and Strategies highlights core concepts. These include process variables for continuous binary distillation columns and the four basic control strategies, the distillate and bottoms product quality performance objectives, and the tuning of process control loops. Without dwelling on complex mathematical descriptions, the book presents the fundamentals of process control of a distillation column as a separation and purification unit operation. It covers the concepts and functional criteria that are critical to successful implementation of process control, as well as measurement and improvement of product quality performance. It describes how process control loops for distillation columns can be tuned for stable operation, with a balance between minimum variability from setpoint changes and excellent response to load disturbances. Designed for students, engineers, technicians, and plant operators alike, this book emphasizes the prevailing need to strike a balance between the details of hypotheses and good engineering judgment. The author outlines learning objectives at the beginning of each chapter and includes chapter-end summaries, exercises, and references to help readers acquire essential knowledge and understanding. The result is a resource that will inform future decisions for the design, operation, and troubleshooting of distillation process control systems.
