Book excerpt: A practical and insightful discussion of time-frequency analysis methods and technologies Time–frequency analysis of seismic signals aims to reveal the local properties of nonstationary signals. The local properties, such as time-period, frequency, and spectral content, vary with time, and the time of a seismic signal is a proxy of geologic depth. Therefore, the time–frequency spectrum is composed of the frequency spectra that are generated by using the classic Fourier transform at different time positions. Different time–frequency analysis methods are distinguished in the construction of the local kernel prior to using the Fourier transform. Based on the difference in constructing the Fourier transform kernel, this book categorises time–frequency analysis methods into two groups: Gabor transform-type methods and energy density distribution methods. This book systematically presents time–frequency analysis methods, including technologies which have not been previously discussed in print or in which the author has been instrumental in developing. In the presentation of each method, the fundamental theory and mathematical concepts are summarised, with an emphasis on the engineering aspects. This book also provides a practical guide to geophysicists who attempt to generate geophysically meaningful time–frequency spectra, who attempt to process seismic data with time-dependent operations for the fidelity of nonstationary signals, and who attempt to exploit the time–frequency space seismic attributes for quantitative characterisation of hydrocarbon reservoirs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The S-Transform (ST) is a frequency-dependent spectral decomposition method that truly localizes spectra in time and frequency. However, it exhibits poor temporal resolution at low frequencies, which can result in inaccurate localization of spectral anomalies and obscure features that have geological meanings. While prior literature developed various modified S-Transforms, called the Generalized ST, (GST) to tailor analyzing windows for particular applications, they do not specifically address the particular shortcoming as noted above. To improve the ST’s temporal resolution at low frequencies, this dissertation develops a new modification to the ST. The proposed algorithm (termed MST) replaces frequency in the ST’s normalized Gaussian window with a linear function of frequency. Through optimizing two constants in the linear frequency function, the modified window shortens its width and sharpens its waveform to improve time resolution at low frequencies without degrading frequency resolution while retaining the ST’s time and frequency resolution at higher frequencies. Further, the MST also conserves energy and preserves the spectral properties of the ST. Comparison analyses of synthetic and real seismic data using the ST, CWT, MST and GSTs show that the MST successfully accomplishes the above. By using optimized coefficients in its linear frequency function, the MST can be useful in hydrocarbon detection and geological interpretation.

Book excerpt: The last two subjects mentioned in the title "Wavelets, Time Frequency Methods and Phase Space" are so well established that they do not need any explanations. The first is related to them, but a short introduction is appropriate since the concept of wavelets emerged fairly recently. Roughly speaking, a wavelet decomposition is an expansion of an arbitrary function into smooth localized contributions labeled by a scale and a position pa rameter. Many of the ideas and techniques related to such expansions have existed for a long time and are widely used in mathematical analysis, theoretical physics and engineering. However, the rate of progress increased significantly when it was realized that these ideas could give rise to straightforward calculational methods applicable to different fields. The interdisciplinary structure (R.C.P. "Ondelettes") of the C.N.R.S. and help from the Societe Nationale Elf-Aquitaine greatly fostered these developments. The conference, the proceedings of which are contained in this volume, was held at the Centre National de Rencontres Mathematiques (C.N.R.M) in Marseille from December 14-18, 1987 and bought together an interdisciplinary mix of par ticipants. We hope that these proceedings will convey to the reader some of the excitement and flavor of the meeting.
