Book excerpt: The objectives of the American Meteorological Society are "the development and dissemination of knowledge of meteorology in all its phases and applications, and the advancement of its professional ideals." The organization of the Society took place in affiliation with the American Association for the Advancement of Science at Saint Louis, Missouri, December 29, 1919, and its incorporation, at Washington, D. C., January 21, 1920. The work of the Society is carried on by the Bulletin, the Journal, and Meteorological Monographs, by papers and discussions at meetings of the Society, through the offices of the Secretary and the Executive Secretary, and by correspondence. All of the Americas are represented in the membership of the Society as well as many foreign countries.

    Book Details:
  • Author : Siegfried Bauer
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-03-09
  • ISBN : 3662093626
  • Pages : 211 pages

Download or read book Planetary Aeronomy written by Siegfried Bauer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Planetary Aeronomy is a modern and concise introduction to the underlying physical and chemical processes that govern the formation and evolution of the upper atmospheres of planets. The general approach employed permits consideration of the growing number of extrasolar planets, the detailed observation of which will become possible over the next decades. The book explains the physics behind many atmospheric processes, which are relevant for the evolution of planetary atmospheres and their water inventories, and also contains useful scaling laws and analytical expressions that can be applied to any planet. Readers thus gain insight into the evolution of terrestrial planets and their long-time habitability, atmospheric stability, etc. This volume can be used both as graduate textbook for students wishing to specialize in the field as well as succinct compendium for researchers in the field.

Book An Investigation of Atmospheric Density Between Altitudes of 180 Km and 300 Km

Download or read book An Investigation of Atmospheric Density Between Altitudes of 180 Km and 300 Km written by Leonard L. DeVries and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A knowledge of atmospheric density and its variation at satellite altitudes is needed for operational support of several military activities. Atmospheric density data computed from the decay rates of more than 40 satellites orbited during a five-year period were analyzed during this investigation. Multiple regression equations were derived to specify the density at 10-km intervals at altitudes from 180 to 300 km as a function of solar activity, time of day, time of year, and combinations of these variables. Density values depicted by these regression equations were then compared with density data which had not been used during the derivation of the equations. The results of this investigation indicate that multiple regression analysis and the associated screening procedure can produce equations from which computed density values are in close agreement with observed density data. The results lead to a conclusion that no single density model can meet all needs. These results also indicate that characteristics of a density model should be selected to fit the purpose for which the model is intended. Four possible density models designed for different purposes are suggested. (Author).

Book Atmosphere Ocean and Climate Dynamics

Download or read book Atmosphere Ocean and Climate Dynamics written by John Marshall and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-14 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students in atmospheric, oceanic, and climate science, Atmosphere, Ocean and Climate Dynamics is an introductory textbook on the circulations of the atmosphere and ocean and their interaction, with an emphasis on global scales. It will give students a good grasp of what the atmosphere and oceans look like on the large-scale and why they look that way. The role of the oceans in climate and paleoclimate is also discussed. The combination of observations, theory and accompanying illustrative laboratory experiments sets this text apart by making it accessible to students with no prior training in meteorology or oceanography. * Written at a mathematical level that is appealing for undergraduates and beginning graduate students * Provides a useful educational tool through a combination of observations and laboratory demonstrations which can be viewed over the web * Contains instructions on how to reproduce the simple but informative laboratory experiments * Includes copious problems (with sample answers) to help students learn the material.

Download or read book Dynamics of Satellites Dynamique des Satellites written by Maurice Roy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book The Atmosphere and Climate of Mars

Download or read book The Atmosphere and Climate of Mars written by Robert M. Haberle and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-06-29 with total page 613 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humanity has long been fascinated by the planet Mars. Was its climate ever conducive to life? What is the atmosphere like today and why did it change so dramatically over time? Eleven spacecraft have successfully flown to Mars since the Viking mission of the 1970s and early 1980s. These orbiters, landers and rovers have generated vast amounts of data that now span a Martian decade (roughly eighteen years). This new volume brings together the many new ideas about the atmosphere and climate system that have emerged, including the complex interplay of the volatile and dust cycles, the atmosphere-surface interactions that connect them over time, and the diversity of the planet's environment and its complex history. Including tutorials and explanations of complicated ideas, students, researchers and non-specialists alike are able to use this resource to gain a thorough and up-to-date understanding of this most Earth-like of planetary neighbours.
