Book Time Dependent Thermal Neutron Energy Spectra in a Monoatomic Heavy Gas

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The time-dependent thermal neutron energy spectra, for times greater thsn the slowing-down time, were generated in a monoatomic heavy gas using multigroup formalism. These spectra were obtained for infinite as well as finite media of Be and graphite. The behavior of asymptotic energy spectra during the last stage of neutron thermalization and diffusion periods was studied. The thermalization time constant for the establishment of the final Maxwellian velocity distribution of neutrons, in a monoatomic heavy gas, was estimated to be equal to (l.l74 xi SIGMA /sub so/v/sub o/)/sup -1/. Total thermalization times for neutrons in Be and graphite were found to be equal to 114 and 238 mu sec, respectively. Using the energy-dependent transport mean free path, the diffusion cooling coefficient for Be was calculated to be equal to 0.890 cm/sup 2/. For graphite, under the constant diffusion coefficient assumption, the diffusion cooling coefficient was determined to be equal to 1.922 cm/sup 2/. (auth).

Book Advances in Nuclear Science and Technology

Download or read book Advances in Nuclear Science and Technology written by Paul Greebler and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Nuclear Science and Technology, Volume 3 provides an authoritative, complete, coherent, and critical review of the nuclear industry. This book presents the advances in the atomic energy field. Organized into six chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the use of pulsed neutron sources for the determination of the thermalization and diffusion properties of moderating as well as multiplying media. This text then examines the effect of nuclear radiation on electronic circuitry and its components. Other chapters consider radiation effects in various inorganic solids, with emphasis on the investigation of variations effected in the mechanical and optical crystalline properties. This book discusses as well several methods for solving various problems in reactor theory. The final chapter deals with several types of pulsed neutron sources in use and speculates on improvements that may be expected in their performance. This book is a valuable resource for design engineers and neuron physicists.

Book A METHOD OF SOLVING THE TIME DEPENDENT NEUTRON THERMALIZATION PROBLEM

Download or read book A METHOD OF SOLVING THE TIME DEPENDENT NEUTRON THERMALIZATION PROBLEM written by and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The method of singular eigenfunctions introduced first by Van Kampen and developed later by Case and Mika in connection with a one velocity transport problem, was adapted to solve the time and energy dependent infinite medium problem. The expansion of neutron density and scattering kernel in series of Hermite functions reduces the Boltzmann equation to a system of homogeneous linear equations. The resulting set of regular and singular eigenfunctions is shown to be complete and explicit formulas are found for the normalization integrals and Green's function. (auth).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based upon a series of lectures I have occasionally given at the University of Gottingen since 1951. They were meant to introduce the students of experimental physics to the work in a neutron physics laboratory dealing with the problem of measuring neutron flux, diffusion length, Fermi age, effective neutron temperature, absorption cross sections and similar problems. Moreover, these lectures were intended to prepare the students for a subsequent lecture covering the physics of nuclear reactors. The original character of this series of lectures has been retained in the book. It is intended for use by students as well as anyone desiring to work on neutron physics measurements. The first half mainly covers the theory of neutron fields, i. e. essentially diffusion and slowing down theory. The second half is largely concerned with measurements in neutron fields. The appendix contains information and data which, in our experience, are frequently required in a neutron laboratory. The field of nuclear physics proper is briefly touched upon in the first two chapters, but only to the extent necessary for the understanding of the following chapters. The multitude of applications of neutron radiation has not been covered. The conclusion of this manuscript coincided with the end of my long period of activity with the Max-Planck-Institut fur Physik at Gottingen. To Professor HEISENBERG lowe thanks for his advice and suggestions for many of the subjects treated here.

Book The Thermal Neutron Spectrum in a Finitemass Medium

Download or read book The Thermal Neutron Spectrum in a Finitemass Medium written by Ernest Park Sims and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The distribution of neutrons at thermal energies in a monatomic Maxwellian gas is determined. Spectra are found in various mass media and for varying amounts of absorption by numerically solving Corngold's higher-order gas equation; a result that is new. From the spectra obtained the average neutron velocity is found and the thermal diffusion length squared is calculated. Using this method and a neutron age from a moments method calculation, the migration area in selected real nuclides is determined. The deviations from Maxwellian of the thermal neutron spectra are used to determine the energy at which a neutron becomes thermal. This effective thermal transition energy, E*, is found for media of various mass with varying amounts of absorption. The neutron thermal spectrum is found to be generally non-Maxwellian for values of the absorption parameter greater than 0.01.
