Book Time Dependent CP Violation Measurements

Download or read book Time Dependent CP Violation Measurements written by Markus Röhrken and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-17 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes a high-quality, high-precision method for the data analysis of an interesting elementary particle reaction. The data was collected at the Japanese B-meson factory KEKB with the Belle detector, one of the most successful large-scale experiments worldwide. CP violation is a subtle quantum effect that makes the world look different when simultaneously left and right and matter and antimatter are exchanged. This being a prerequisite for our own world to have developed from the big bang, there are only a few experimental indications of such effects, and their detection requires very intricate techniques. The discovery of CP violation in B meson decays garnered Kobayashi and Maskawa, who had predicted these findings as early as 1973, the 2008 Nobel prize in physics. This thesis describes in great detail what are by far the best measurements of branching ratios and CP violation parameters in two special reactions with two charm mesons in the final state. It presents an in-depth but accessible overview of the theory, phenomenology, experimental setup, data collection, Monte Carlo simulations, (blind) statistical data analysis, and systematic uncertainty studies.

Book CP Violation in B s 0 J psi phi Decays

Download or read book CP Violation in B s 0 J psi phi Decays written by Sabato Leo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-24 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis reports on the final measurement of the flavor-mixing phase in decays of strange-bottom mesons (B_s) into J/psi and phi mesons performed in high-energy proton-antiproton collisions recorded by the Collider Experiment at Fermilab. Interference occurs between direct decays and decays following virtual particle-antiparticle transitions (B_s-antiB_s). The phase difference between transition amplitudes (“mixing phase”) is observable and extremely sensitive to contributions from non-standard-model particles or interactions that may be very hard to detect otherwise – a fact that makes the precise measurement of the B_s mixing phase one of the most important goals of particle physics. The results presented include a precise determination of the mixing phase and a suite of other important supplementary results. All measurements are among the most precise available from a single experiment and provide significantly improved constraints on the phenomenology of new particles and interactions.

Book Studies of CP Violation in Charmless Three Body b Hadron Decays

Download or read book Studies of CP Violation in Charmless Three Body b Hadron Decays written by Daniel O'Hanlon and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-02 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights two essential analyses of data collected during the LHCb experiment, based on the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. The first comprises the first observation and studies of matter-antimatter asymmetries in two three-body b-baryon decays, paving the way for more precise measurements of the relatively unknown decay properties of b-baryon decays. The second is an analysis of a charged B meson decay to three charged pions, where previously large matter-antimatter asymmetries were observed in a model-independent analysis. Here a model of the decay amplitude is constructed using the unitarity-conserving ‘K-matrix’ model for the scalar contributions, so as to gain an understanding of how the previously observed matter-antimatter asymmetries arise; further, the model’s construction yields the most precise and comprehensive study of this decay mode to date.

Book Polarization and CP Violation Measurements

Download or read book Polarization and CP Violation Measurements written by Michael Prim and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-03-28 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes the thorough analysis of the rare B meson decay into φ K* on data taken by the Belle Collaboration at the B-meson-factory KEKB over 10 years. This reaction is very interesting, because it in principle allows the observation of CP-violation effects. In the Standard Model however, no CP violation in this reaction is expected. An observation of CP asymmetries thus immediately implies new physics. This thesis presents an amplitude analysis of this decay and the search for CP violation in detail and discusses methods to solve related problems: The quantification of multivariate dependence and the improvement of numeric evaluation speed of normalization integrals in amplitude analysis. In addition it provides an overview of the theory, experimental setup, (blind) statistical data analysis and estimation of systematic uncertainties.

Book Measurement of CKM angle Gamma with Charmed B0 Meson Decays

Download or read book Measurement of CKM angle Gamma with Charmed B0 Meson Decays written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis reports measurements of the time-dependent CP asymmetries in fully reconstructed B° → (D{sup (*){-+}} and B° → D{sup {-+}} [rho]{sup {+-}}) decays in approximately 232 million [Upsilon](4S) → B{bar B} events, collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B factory at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center in California, as published in Ref. [14]. The phenomenon of CP violation allows one to distinguish between matter and antimatter, and, as such, is one of the essential ingredients needed to explain the apparent abundance of matter over antimatter in the universe. The Standard Model describes the observed elementary particles in terms of three generations of quarks and leptons, as well as the weak, electromagnetic, and strong interactions between them. In the Standard Model, CP violation is incorporated in the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix, which describes the weak interactions between the quarks. The weak interactions between quarks are described by coupling constants that are functions of three real parameters and one irreducible complex phase. The magnitude of all CP violating effects in the Standard Model is related to this complex phase. The measurement of the CP violating phase of the CKM matrix is an important part of the present scientific program in particle physics. Violation of the CP symmetry manifests itself as a non-zero area of the Unitarity Triangle. The Unitarity Triangle needs to be overconstrained by experimental measurements in order to demonstrate that the CKM mechanism is the correct explanation of this phenomenon. No stringent measurement of the CKM-angle [gamma] is yet available.

Book Measurement of CP Observables in B D CPK Decays and Constraints on the CKM Angle Gamma

Download or read book Measurement of CP Observables in B D CPK Decays and Constraints on the CKM Angle Gamma written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using the entire sample of 467 million [Upsilon](4S) 2!B{bar B} decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B factory at SLAC, we perform a 'GLW' analysis of B{sup ±} 2!D{sup ±} decays, using decay modes in which the neutral D meson decays to either CP-eigenstates or non-CP-eigenstates. We measure the partial decay rate charge asymmetries for CP-even and CP-odd D final states to be A{sub CP+} = 0.25 ± 0.06 ± 0.02 and A{sub CP-} = -0.09 ± 0.07 ± 0.02, respectively, where the first error is the statistical and the second is the systematic uncertainty. The parameter A{sub CP+} is different from zero with a significance of 3.6 standard deviations, constituting evidence for direct CP violation. We also measure the ratios of the charged-averaged B partial decay rates in CP and non-CP decays, R{sub CP+} = 1.18 ± 0.09 ± 0.05 and R{sub CP-} = 1.07 {+-} 0.08 {+-} 0.04. We infer frequentist confidence intervals for the angle [gamma] of the (db) unitarity triangle, for the strong phase difference [delta]{sub B}, and for the amplitude ratio r{sub B}, which are related to the B− 2!D− decay amplitude by r{sub B}e{sup i({delta}{sub b-[gamma]})} = A(B− 2!{bar D}°K−)/A(B− 2!D°K°−). Including statistical and systematic uncertainties, they obtain 0.24

Book Observation of CP Violation in B DK Decays

Download or read book Observation of CP Violation in B DK Decays written by Paolo Gandini and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-09-05 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CP violation is a well-established phenomenon in particle physics, but until 2001 it was only observed in kaons. In the last decade, several matter-antimatter asymmetries have been observed in neutral B mesons in line with the expectations of the Standard Model of the weak interaction. Direct CP violation is also expected in the decay rates of charged B+ mesons versus that of B- mesons, though the greatest effects are present in a decay that occurs just twice in 10 million decays. Such rarity requires huge samples to study and this is exactly what the LHC, and its dedicated B-physics experiment LHCb provide. This thesis presents an analysis of the first two years of LHCb data. The author describes the first observation of the rare decay, B- → DK-, D → π-K+ and the first observation of direct CP violation in this B decay. The work constitutes essential information on the experiment’s measurement of a fundamental parameter of the theory and stands as a benchmark against which subsequent analyses of this type will be compared.

Book Measurement of the CKM Angles alpha and gamma at the BABAR Experiment

Download or read book Measurement of the CKM Angles alpha and gamma at the BABAR Experiment written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary objective of the BABAR Experiment is to test the Standard Model explanation of CP violation in weak decays by over-constraining the CKM Unitarity Triangle. This includes the measurement of all three angles of the triangle. Although precise measurements of the angle [beta] have been obtained using B decays to charmonium states, the remaining angles, [alpha] and [gamma], pose greater experimental challenges. In this paper, the latest measurements of modes which will constrain [alpha] and [gamma] will be presented, including B[sup 0] --> [rho][sup +][rho][sup -] for [alpha] and a measurement of sin(2[beta] + [gamma]) from the B[sup 0] --> D(*)[sup [+-]][pi][sup [-+]] system.

Book Evidence for Direct CP Violation in the Measurement of the Cabibbo Kobayashi Maskawa Angle Gamma with B to D K Decays

Download or read book Evidence for Direct CP Violation in the Measurement of the Cabibbo Kobayashi Maskawa Angle Gamma with B to D K Decays written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We report the measurement of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa CP-violating angle? through a Dalitz plot analysis of neutral D meson decays to K{sub S}°??− and K{sub S}° K+K− produced in the processes B{sup {-+}} → DK{sup {-+}}, B{sup {-+}} → D* K{sup {-+}} with D* → D?°, D?, and B{sup {-+}} → DK*{sup {-+}} with K*{sup {-+}} → K{sub S}°?{sup {-+}}, using 468 million B{bar B} pairs collected by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e− collider at SLAC. We measure? = (68 ± 14 ± 4 ± 3){sup o} (modulo 180{sup o}), where the first error is statistical, the second is the experimental systematic uncertainty and the third reflects the uncertainty in the description of the neutral D decay amplitudes. This result is inconsistent with? = 0 (no direct CP violation) with a significance of 3.5 standard deviations.
