Book Time Dependent Behaviour of Concrete Structures

Download or read book Time Dependent Behaviour of Concrete Structures written by Raymond Ian Gilbert and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2010-09-21 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Serviceability failures of concrete structures involving excessive cracking or deflection are relatively common, even in structures that comply with code requirements. This is often as a result of a failure to adequately account for the time-dependent deformations of concrete in the design of the structure. The serviceability provisions embodied in codes of practice are relatively crude and, in some situations, unreliable and do not adequately model the in-service behaviour of structures. In particular, they fail to adequately account for the effects of creep and shrinkage of the concrete. Design for serviceability is complicated by the non-linear and inelastic behaviour of concrete at service loads. Providing detailed information, this book helps engineers to rationally predict the time-varying deformation of concrete structures under typical in-service conditions. It gives analytical methods to help anticipate time-dependent cracking, the gradual change in tension stiffening with time, creep induced deformations and the load independent strains caused by shrinkage and temperature changes. The calculation procedures are illustrated with many worked examples. A vital guide for practising engineers and advanced students of structural engineering on the design of concrete structures for serviceability and provides a penetrating insight into the time-dependent behaviour of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures.

Book A New Model for Computing Deflection of Partially Prestressed Concrete Beams Under Static and Cyclic Fatigue Loading

Download or read book A New Model for Computing Deflection of Partially Prestressed Concrete Beams Under Static and Cyclic Fatigue Loading written by Ali Salah Alameh and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was conducted to evaluate the deflection of partially prestressed concrete beams (PPC) under static and cyclic fatigue loading covering the boundaries of fully prestressed and fully reinforced. Two analytical models were developed, one model for predicting deflection under service monotonic loading and the other for predicting deflection under cyclic fatigue loading. Both models were derived based on interaction between the tensile steel and concrete through bond and slip of reinforcement between the cracked sections. The developed models were compared With extensive experimental results and showed to reproduce, within a good degree of accuracy, load-deflection response of PPC beams tested under both static and cyclic fatigue loading-Several conclusions were drawn on the basis of analytical results, verified by experimental evidence. In designing prestressed concrete beams for fatigue loading, careful consideration should be given to the increase in reinforcement stresses induced by cyclic creep of concrete. This phenomenon is particularly important in cracked fully prestressed beams where the stresses were observed to increase significantly with number of cycles. This phenomenon does not only reduce the fatigue life of the beams but also results in a significant increase in their deflections under cyclic loading. The reinforcing steel in the partially prestressed beams plays a major role in reducing the phenomenon of steel stress increase under cyclic loading which results in enhancing their fatigue life and deformation performance! cracking, deflection,). It was found also, that parameters, such as bond strength, crack spacings and bar diameters have little influence on the service load-deflection response post cracking indicating that the contribution of the uncracked regions of the concrete member to its overall flexural rigidity can be practically neglected.

Book Partial Prestressing From Theory to Practice

Download or read book Partial Prestressing From Theory to Practice written by M.Z. Cohn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These volumes contain the edited documents presented at the NATO-Sponsored Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) on Partial Pre8tre88ing, from Theory to Practice, held at the CEBTP Research Centre of Saint-Remy-Ies-Chevreuse, France, June 18-22, 1984. The workshop was a direct extension of the International Symposium on Nonlinearity and Continuity in Pre8tre88ed Concrete, organized by the editor at the University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Canada, July 4-6, 1983. The organization of the NATO-ARW on Partial Prestressing was prompted by the need to explain and reduce the wide dirrerences of expert oph:iipn· on the subject, which make more difficult the accep tance of partial prestressing by the profession at large. Specifically, the workshop attempted to: - produce a more unified picture of partial presetressing, by con fronting and, where possible, reconciling some conflicting American and European views on this subject; - bring theoretical advances on partial prestressing within the grasp of engineering practice; - provide the required background for developing some guidelines on the use of partial prestressing, in agreement with existing structural concrete standards. The five themes selected for the workshop agenda were: (1) Problems of Partially Prestressed Concrete (PPC). (2) Partially Prestressed Concrete Members: Static Loading. (3) PPC Members: Repeated and Dynamic Loadings. (4) Continuity in Partially Prestressed Concrete. (5) Practice of Partial Prestressing.
