Book excerpt: A wise, passionate account of the pleasures of traveling solo In our hectic, hyperconnected lives, many people are uncomfortable with the prospect of solitude. Yet a little time to ourselves can be an opportunity to slow down, savor, and try new things, especially when traveling. Through on-the-ground reporting, insights from social science, and recounting the experiences of artists, writers, and innovators who cherished solitude, Stephanie Rosenbloom considers how traveling alone deepens appreciation for everyday beauty, bringing into sharp relief the sights, sounds, and smells that one isn't necessarily attuned to in the presence of company. Walking through four cities--Paris, Florence, Istanbul, and New York--and four seasons, Alone Time gives us permission to pause, to relish the sensual details of the world rather than hurtling through museums and uploading photos to Instagram. In chapters about dining out, visiting museums, and pursuing knowledge, we begin to see how the moments we have to ourselves--on the road or at home--can be used to enrich our lives. Rosenbloom's engaging and elegant prose makes Alone Time as warmly intimate an account as the details of a trip shared by a beloved friend--and will have its many readers eager to set off on their own solo adventures.

Book The Spiritual Evolution of Margarito Bautista

Download or read book The Spiritual Evolution of Margarito Bautista written by Elisa Eastwood Pulido and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In 1903, at the age of twenty-four, Margarito Bautista (1878-1961) left his childhood home on Mexico's Central Plateau and relocated to the Mormon Colonies in the northern Mexican wilderness. Enthused by his recent conversion to Mormonism, Bautista wanted to live in proximity to and learn from the Euro-Americans who had evangelized him. Nearly forty years later, as a Mormon excommunicate and religious entrepreneur, he returned permanently to the Central Plateau to establish his own indigenously-led polygamous utopia in the town of Ozumba. In this volume I have tried to answer two central questions concerning Bautista's journey: After dedicating so many years of his life to the evangelization of Mexicans on both sides of the U.S. border, what led to his separation from the Mormon Church? How did he become the founder of an indigenous movement which observed Mormonism's most difficult practices? My study of Bautista's spiritual trajectory has been an exercise in deep "listening" to the writings he left: a 564-page tome that employs an indigenous hermeneutic in its melding of Mormon theology and the history of Mexico, nearly sixteen years of diaries, numerous letters, and multiple pamphlets. Bautista is often represented as the sole creator of his Mexican-inspired improvisations on Mormon doctrine. The Mormon Church however played a major role in his spiritual education. Bautista took his life-long views on indigenous exceptionalism directly from Mormon scripture. In the two decades following his conversion Bautista thrived under the Mormon umbrella, moving through the ranks of Mormon priesthood, mastering Mormon doctrine and scripture in English, and becoming acquainted with esoteric temple rituals. But in 1924 his meteoric rise stalled. In this volume I will demonstrate that Bautista's insistence on independent Mexican ecclesiastical authority and his fundamentalist clinging to historical practices and doctrines, at a time when the mainstream Church was abandoning them, estranged him from both Euro-American and Mexican Mormons. Nevertheless, These same views propelled him on to his ultimate calling and mission, that of an independent religious entrepreneur and utopian founder. I will show that the roots of Bautista's uncompromising doctrine and religious activism are multiple and complex. They are found in the Mexican anarchism extant in the farmlands of central Mexico where he was raised, in the flourishing cultural nationalism of Mexico, in the transnational perspective created by his frequent movement across borders, and in the tenets of early Mormonism, which Bautista learned while a resident from 1903 to 1910 in the polygamist Mormon Colonies in the wilderness of northern Mexico"--

Through objects, places and actions, the world is revealed as both permanent and ever-changing. Seasons will appeal to children, adults, designers, art-lovers... 'At first glance, this is a beautiful art book reminiscent of the children's book illustration of the 1960s. 'The most striking thing about it for me is that it forces you to slow down and to reflect on the associations within, which are not always immediately obvious. When you read the book as a whole, you really do get the sense that the world is both changing and unchanging. It's a meditation. The more times you read this book, the more you get out of it.' - Julia Marshall, publisher

Book Seasons of the Sacred

Download or read book Seasons of the Sacred written by Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee and published by The Golden Sufi Center. This book was released on 2021-05-01 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seasons of the Sacred weaves together poems, images, and stories of Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter, reconnecting us to our roots in the cycles of nature and our own soul. As our world appears more and more out of balance, our destruction of the natural world increasing, there is a vital need to remember what is essential, simple, and sacred. Likening Spring to falling in love, Summer with abundance and spiritual awakening, and Autumn with fruition and wisdom, this book continuously reflects the profound resonance of humanity within nature. Never more relevant than now, the chapter on Winter helps the reader remember what is most essential, showing how there is meaning and even peace amidst the most devastating losses, and how all life belongs to these deeper patterns of change. The book draws from such a variety of sources, such as Rumi, Hafiz, Lao Tzu, Rabia, Julian of Norwich, T.S. Eliot, and others. Each chapter opens with a unique woodcut or engraving image, further illustrating the beauty of our seasons. Vaughan-Lee adeptly connects the reader to the deepest envisioning of contemporary challenges. Climate catastrophe, refugees, cultural degradation, and political divisiveness are all contextualized within natural cycles of birth, loss, and transition, and the reader is guided to listen through the fear and anxiety of our age to the deeper ground of belonging that calls from even the most destitute inner and outer landscapes. Seasons of the Sacred is Llewellyn Vaughn-Lee’s fifth contribution to his spiritual ecology series, which places the human story within the story of the Earth and compels the examination of attitudes, beliefs, and habits in relation to the ongoing desecration, ecological devastation—and potential restoration—of our common home. “Vaughan-Lee encourages reconnecting with the Earth in this heartfelt compilation of essays, poems, and illustrations…. Suitable for readers of all spiritual persuasions, Vaughan-Lee’s soothing observations will inspire a more mindful contemplation of Earth’s rhythms.” —Publishers Weekly “Seasons of the Sacred is a beckoning down into the simple rhythms of nature. With his guiding eloquence, Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee moves us into conversation with the sacred, calling our awareness to the concealed gifts of each season. Drawing on the ancient poetry of Rumi, Hafiz, Julian of Norwich, Wordsworth, and others, we can’t help but fall into step with the numinous found in ordinary life.” —Toko-pa Turner, author of Belonging: Remembering Ourselves Home

Book Understanding Times And Seasons In God s Calendar

Download or read book Understanding Times And Seasons In God s Calendar written by Apostle Frequency Revelator and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-11-16 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered why a multitude of people claim to have prayed, fasted and done everything they know best yet their situations and circumstances haven't changed? Have you ever given yourself a moment to think about dozens of believers who are entangled in a morass of debilitating poverty, lack, and limitation yet they claim to believe God? Have you ever wondered why some people have even gone to the extent of being discouraged in their Christian walk because their prayers were not answered? Have you ever wondered why certain things are taking so long to materialise in your life? The answer to all the above scenarios is not in lack of power, wisdom or prayer but it is simply an issue of lack of understanding of times and seasons in God. In this publication, Apostle Frequency Revelator cracks the mystery code and unveils the divine truth that many of God's people pray, fast, cry, sow seeds, confess scriptures and still experience frustration in their finances, health, jobs, marriages and businesses because of lack of God's timing. Many believers are agonised like this because they haven't learnt how to properly and correctly discern the times and seasons. Some go to the extent of rushing ahead of their season without discerning their timing hence that they end up defeated, depleted, weary and distressed. Demystifying the common myths of God's timing, Apostle Frequency Revelator reveals that the most vital and crucial matters that you must prioritise in the kingdom of God is how to understand times and seasons in God's calendar. Understanding times and seasons as expounded in this book will help you get prophetic direction and also prevent you from making wrong turns and unwise decisions in your life. If you understand the season, you will know if it is the right time for you to make a move on a particular matter or not. If you understand the times and seasons of God, you will be rightly positioned in the spirit realm and attuned to the frequency of God such that you will know when it's the right time for you to move to another city, or switch to a new job, or start a church. Because you are attuned to the spirit realm and aligned to God's purpose, you will see all the right doors opening for you and everything falling into place according to his plan. Just like the sons of Issachar who had an acute understanding of the times and knew exactly what Israel ought to do at a time, it is very important that you understand what season you are in order for you to enter into and fulfil your due season. In this publication, Apostle Frequency Revelator contends that just like there are natural seasons on the earth, there are also spiritual seasons. He therefore, unveils the secrets of the rotational prophetic timeline of times and seasons which is a key to understanding where you are and how to number your days. The apostle further explores the divine truth that time is not one of the characteristics of God. He contends that God is not defined by time because He lives, functions and operates in the eternal realm that is outside our time dimension. Time is not an absolute because it only exists when its parameters are defined by absolutes. God set the earth in time while man was created from the eternal realm. Although man lives on earth, he doesn't operate according to earthly time because he was created in the eternal realm which falls outside the scope or domain of time hence man was never designed to function according to earthly time.
