Excerpt: ... the Trees of North Carolina. trees bearing cones. x pines.--These have their fruit in large scaly cones, popularly called burs, and have evergreen needle-shaped leaves, two to five enclosed in a sheath at their base. 1. Yellow Pine. (Pinus mitis, Michx.)--This, with us, is called Short-leaved Pine and Spruce Pine. The first is objectionable, because we have at least two species with shorter leaves; and the second, because another is more appropriately called by that name. I have, therefore, adopted the name by which it is known in the Middle States, and recommend its use here, as it is much to be desired that there be a greater uniformity in the popular designations of our forest trees. In the great confusion now prevalent, it is often quite impossible to ascertain what is meant by the names of our most common trees and other plants. This is, perhaps, the most widely diffused of all our Pines, it being common from New England to Florida, mostly in light clay soils. With us it is found from the coast to the mountains, but more rarely in the Lower District, and it enters into the composition of most of our upland forests. It is from 40 to 60 feet high, with a circumference of 4 or 5 and even 6 feet. The limbs on the upper part of the tree are more inclined towards the trunk than those of our other species, so as to give somewhat of a pyramidal form to the top. The leaves are 2 to 5 inches long, generally two, but sometimes three, in a sheath. The cone or bur is the smallest of all our species, rarely attaining a length of 2 inches, the tips of the scales armed with slender short prickles. The heart-wood is fine grained and but moderately resinous; but the sap-wood soon decays. The timber is extensively used in house and ship building, ..

Book Forest Industry Prospects

Download or read book Forest Industry Prospects written by and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Upper French Broad watershed in western North Carolina is heavily forested and well populated by a wide variety of forest industries. Products range from lumber and dimension to veneer, particleboard, furniture and paper. In terms of commercial forest area, product values ran about $85 per acre as compared to $5 for the U.S. as a whole. This report suggests that prospects for additional growth and increased use of wood and wood products by the right kinds of industries can expand employment, payrolls, and improve the economy of the region.

Book The Forests Forest Lands and Forest Products of Eastern North Carolina Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Forests Forest Lands and Forest Products of Eastern North Carolina Classic Reprint written by William Willard Ashe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-17 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Forests, Forest Lands, and Forest Products of Eastern North Carolina Indeed, nothing in the way of forest management could be more reckless and destructive than the treatment of our long-leaf pine forests during the past few decades. In the boxing for turpentine the trees have been cut so deeply and so extensively that both their vitality and strength have been greatly weakened, and the storms have prostrated many of the finest specimens. The lumberman and the storms have been followed by forest fires, which have com plated the destruction, already begun in so systematic a manner, of large areas. Started at times by thoughtless hunters at night, by sparks from an engine, by careless squatters or tenants, or even at times by land owners; in the hope of improving the grazing capacity of their lands during the following season, these forest fires sweep irresisti bly across miles Of territory, destroying not only the mature for est trees, but also the young growth; and thus destroy the forest of the future as well as of the present. And the few young pines which may have escaped destruction in this way soon follow the fate of the others by being destroyed by hogs. Many of these long leaf pine lands which lie in the sand hill regions of Eastern North Carolina have had their forest removed so completely that they have become waste lands, covered by a thin growth of nearly worth less scrubby oak. The total area of these waste lands is now nearly half a million acres, and is steadily increasing. This Report endeavors to show that while much of these Waste lands are worth less for other purposes, they can be reset with long-leaf pine forests if they can only be protected against forest fires and stock. And it is gratifying to find among the lumbermen themselves a growing realization of the fact that it is to their interest and to the interest of the public at large that this destructive policy give place to a more intelligent plan which, while it does not Seriously curtail the utilization of the existing forests, it looks to their protection and perpetuity.
