The stand of timber is estimated roughly at 746 billion cubic feet, of which 48 5 billion cubic feet is saw timber and 261 billion cubic feet cordwood. Almost three-fourths of the saw timber is in the remaining virgin forests. These remaining virgin forests are chiefly found in two widely separated regions, the South and far West, from which the United States is now drawing the bulk of its lumber cut. Together, they have 85 per cent of the total area still occupied by virgin growth, and 95 per cent of the re maining stand of virgin timber. The area of virgin growth in the far West is twice that in the South, with a stand in the ratio of 3% to 1. 'World Development Report 2009: Reshaping Economic Geography' concludes that these spatial transformations are essential, and should be encouraged. The conclusion is not without controversy. Slum-dwellers now number a billion, but the rush to cities continues. Globalization is believed to benefit many, but not the billion people living in lagging areas of developing nations. High poverty and mortality persist among the world's 'bottom billion', while others grow wealthier and live longer lives.
