Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from British-Grown Timber and Timber Trees: Being a Concise Description of Each Species, Together With Notes as to Their Value for Ornamental and Economic Planting, Including an Account of the Soils Suited to Their Cultivation, the Uses to Which the Timber Is Applied, the Current Value of the Wood The value of home-grown timber for the purposes of the architect and builder has, in the past, been but little recognised, the reason being that foreign wood, seasoned and converted for immediate use, is obtainable in such vast quantities and at so reasonable a price that the necessity for utilising to the fullest the resources of our woodlands has never before arisen. Since the days of the "wooden walls of old England," when British Oak played so important a part, home-grown timber has been but little appreciated, and has in the main only been utilised for the commoner or less important purposes to which it can be applied on the farm and estate. To those who have little interest in our home woods and their resources, such a statement may appear strange; and all the more so as it is universally admitted that Oak and Ash timber of native growth are superior in lasting properties to any that has been sent from abroad, and that native Birch and Beech are quite equal to foreign importations, while several of our coniferous woods, when matured and seasoned, have been found of the greatest value for general constructive purposes. Book Tropical Timbers of the World

Download or read book Tropical Timbers of the World written by Martin Chudnoff and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 829 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past two decades U.S. lumber imports from the tropics have increased fourfold. Plywood trade, mostly from Asian sources, has soared forty-fold and now equals our domestic production. Log imports, though, have decreased drastically from about 100 million board feet (log scale) in the 1950's to 30 million currently. Much of the world timber trade now is in the form of processed material. Many more tropical wood species and species groupings are being made available to U.S. processors. Most of these have been well known for many years on the European markets. This interest in supplemental supplies from overseas is in both softwoods and hardwoods. An extensive foreign literature has described the properties and uses of tropical woods, but much of it is no longer readily available. In this country the U.S. Forest Products Laboratory, over the years, issued 'Information Leaflets' or 'Foreign Wood Series' reports on some species of importance. But many of these are now out of print. The most recent comprehensive document, 'Properties of Imported Tropical Woods, ' contained a description of about 100 tropical genera.

Download or read book Timber written by Filibert Roth and published by . This book was released on 1895 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I have the honor to transmit herewith for publication a brief but comprehensive discussion of the characteristics and properties of wood in general and of our American timbers in particular, which it is hoped may be useful to engineers, architects, carpenters, lumbermen, and all wood workers. The paper was prepared by Mr. Filibert Roth, in charge of the investigations in timber physics. Although much of the information contained in this bulletin exists in the experience of practical woodworkers and in books in other languages, it has never before been published in English is systematic and accessible form and with special application to American timbers. Such a publication can not, of course, exhaust any part of this great subject. It is desired that it may be followed by a more elaborate treatise when additional knowledge has been gained through the investigations now in progress. The information it contains is largely based on actual experiment and scientific observation, and will, it is hoped, not only explain the experiences of the practical worker with his material, but will remove erroneous notions, and thus aid in improving the practice and lead to a more rational use of our forest resources."--Letter of Transmittal, Page [i].
