Book excerpt: Why Not? After all, no-one had ever done it before. It would be one of the longest of all overland journeys – half way round the world, from the English Channel to Singapore. They knew that several expeditions had already tried it. Some had got as far as the desrts of Persia; a few had even reached the plains of India. But no one had managed to go on from there: over the jungle clad mountains of Assam and across northern Burma to Thailand and Malaya. Over the last 3,000 miles it seemed there were ‘just too many rivers and too few roads'. But no-one really knew … In fact, their problems began much earlier than that. As mere undergraduates, they had no money, no cars, nothing. But with a cool audacity, which was to become characteristic, they set to work – wheedling and cajoling. First, they coaxed the BBC to come up with some film for a possible TV series. They then gently persuaded the manufacturers to lend them two factory-fresh Land Rovers. A publisher was even sweet-talked into giving them an advance on a book. By the time they were ready to go, their sponsors (more than 80 of them) ranged from whiskey distillers to the makers of collapsible buckets. In late 1955, they set off. Seven months and 12,000 miles later, two very weary Land Rovers, escorted by police outriders, rolled into Singapore – to flash bulbs and champagne. Now, fifty years on, their book, ‘First Overland', is republished – with a foreword by Sir David Attenborough. After all, it was he who gave them that film.

Book THE LIFE AND WORK OF ST PAUL

Download or read book THE LIFE AND WORK OF ST PAUL written by Frederic William Farrar and published by Christian Publishing House. This book was released on 2022-03-03 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chief object has been to give a definite, accurate, and intelligible impression of St. Paul’s teaching; of the situations in which he was engaged; of the circumstances which educed his statements of doctrine and practice; of the innermost heart of his theology in each of its phases; of his Epistles as a whole, and of each Epistle in particular as complete and perfect in itself. Sometimes, in our custom of studying the Bible year after year in different texts and isolated chapters, we are but too apt to lose sight of what the Bible is as a whole and even of the special significance of its separate books.

Book The First and Second Letters to Timothy

Download or read book The First and Second Letters to Timothy written by Jerome D. Quinn and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2000 with total page 1004 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inaugural volume of the ECC series provides a fresh, readable translation of 1 and 2 Timothy together with notes and commentary on this highly relevant section of Scripture. The Notes section of the commentary offers detailed philological analysis of the majority of the words used in these two Pastoral Epistles. The Comment section guides readers through the complex theological, historical, and practical issues facing the heirs of Paul in the Christian church. The issues treated in 1 and 2 Timothy have a remarkably modern ring to them. Addressing such "contemporary" topics as the qualifications for church leadership, the roles of women, the use of wealth, heterodoxy, worship, and ethics, these Pauline letters remain highly relevant to church life today. This new volume not only offers the best of current biblical scholarship on Paul's letters to Timothy but also demonstrates the high standard of excellence marking the ECC series.
