Book excerpt: What would the Bible be without farmers? Adam, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Job were all farmers. Shepherds came to find Jesus in the manger. Farmers and farming practices were at the center of many of Jesus' parables. And, even though he was the son of a carpenter, Jesus is called the Good Shepherd. Despite a gap of thousands of years, today's farmers face many of the same challenges as farmers in the Bible. Granted, Noah did not have a skid steer to shovel manure off the ark, and Abraham did not have GPS guidance on his oxen. However, those farmers experienced weather problems and crop failures, and also enjoyed successful seasons. Like us, they farmed and lived by faith. The stories of the biblical farmers still have special significance today. The devotions in this book explore the living farmers of the Bible, as well as those who feature in so many of Jesus' parables. They also look at other scriptures and see how farmers of the twenty-first century can apply them to daily life. Author Scott Skelly shares his lifetime of experience as a farmer in this unique devotional collection.

  • Author : Karen Baker-Fletcher
  • Publisher : Chalice Press
  • Release : 2006-12-01
  • ISBN : 0827206402
  • Pages : 212 pages

Download or read book Dancing with God written by Karen Baker-Fletcher and published by Chalice Press. This book was released on 2006-12-01 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dancing With God is an exploration of the divine gifts of courage and grace in the face of evil. Moreover, it is a doctrine of God as the source of that courage. Baker-Fletcher presents an understanding of the work of the Trinity with regard to the problem of crucifixion, a metaphor she uses for unnecessary violence. She develops a process of relational, womanist theology that considers the empathetic omnipresence of God in the midst of unnecessary suffering and the healing power of God in movement of the Holy Spirit. She engages the contributions of a diversity of theologians like Paul Tillich, Karl Barth, Gordon Kaufman, John Cobb, Jr., Majorie Suchocki, Charles Hartshorne, Andrew Sung Park, and Katie Cannon in her discussion of the dance of the Trinity in creation, and the problem of sin, evil, and suffering. Through creative works like that of Alice Walker's The Color Purple and journalist Joyce King's account of the James Byrd, Jr. murder in Jasper County, Texas, Baker-Fletcher reveals the healing, encouraging power of the Holy Spirit in the lives of survivors of unnecessary violence.

Book All God s Creatures

    Book Details:
  • Author : Daniel P. Horan
  • Publisher : Rowman & Littlefield
  • Release : 2020-07-07
  • ISBN : 1978701543
  • Pages : 267 pages

Download or read book All God s Creatures written by Daniel P. Horan and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-07-07 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The predominant “stewardship model” of creation is the result of an intentional effort to correct approaches that reinforce human sovereignty and the resulting environmental degradation. However, as All God’s Creatures argues, the stewardship model actually does not offer a correction but rather reinscribes many of the very same pitfalls. After close analysis of the stewardship model, this book identifies scriptural, theological, and philosophical sources to support the adoption of a “community of creation” paradigm. Drawing on postcolonial theory, this book proposes the concept of “planetarity” as a framework for conceiving the relationship between human and nonhuman creation, and the Creator, in a new way. This theoretical framework is grounded by a retrieval of the medieval Franciscan theological and philosophical tradition. The result is what can be called a postcolonial Franciscan theology of creation imagined in terms of planetarity, providing a constructive and nonanthropocentric response to the need for a new conceptualization of the doctrine of creation.

Book Book of Wisdom by John Gill

Download or read book Book of Wisdom by John Gill written by James J Maccabbee Company and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2009-04 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Author John Gill (1697 - 1771) was born in Kettering, Northamptonshire. In his youth, he attended Kettering Grammar School, mastering the Latin classics and learning Greek by age eleven. The young scholar also had a love for Hebrew which would follow him throughout his life. At about twelve years of age, Gill heard a sermon from his pastor, William Wallis, whose text came from Genesis 3:9, "And the Lord called unto Adam, and said unto him, where art thou?" He reflected often on the message of Wallis' sermon and it eventually led to his conversion. It was not until seven years later, however, that young John made a public profession of his faith in Christ, when he was almost nineteen years of age. His first pastoral work was as an intern at age twenty one, and he later became a pastor in Southwark, England. His pastorate lasted 51 years. Gill was an English Bible scholar, and a prolific writer who authored among other things, an expository commentary on the entire Bible. John Gill was a profound scholar whose ministry in some fashion still touches millions of people worldwide. About this Book Unlike human wisdom, the Book of Proverbs is of divine inspiration. The Book of Wisdom is presented as a devotional from John Gill's commentary on these Proverbs. Book of Wisdom is a tribute offered by the James J. MacCabbee Company to Pastor John Gills' lifetime of brilliant work. As Proverbs 8:1, "Doth not Wisdom cry?" This daily devotional is prepared for governmental leaders, leaders in the news and entertainment industries, clergy and laypersons; employees and employers; spouses, parents and children. In fact Wisdom is offered to "anyone who has ears to hear" (see Matthew 13:9). Those who receive such Wisdom as presented here will not be disappointed.

  • Pages : 94 pages

Download or read book Called to Bless written by John Rice and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2024-05-23 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humans were created to bless one another, those they love and those they do not. According to Scripture (Num 6:27), God promises to release more of his blessings, more of his goodness, grace, and love into the world. In Hebrew the word for “bless” means “God’s intention.” When people speak words of blessing, in God’s name, they are praying for the fullness of God’s intentions to be released into their lives. In a world where division and polarization are becoming normative, God gives a “new” ministry resource—blessing ministry. The power of blessing can bridge those gaps and bring healing to the individuals involved. There is no individual situation, no community need where blessing prayers are not beneficial. Wherever there is joy and celebration in people’s lives, blessing prayers bring only more joy and thanksgiving. There is an awakening in the lives of God’s people wherever the ministry of blessing is being taught and practiced. Communities are experiencing greater health. Churches are becoming more alive. Hearts are being healed and lives transformed, simply by blessing others in Jesus’ name. God is calling his people to become a people of blessing!
