Book excerpt: "Till we fall" is a modern fairy tale for grown-ups. So tenderly is magic woven into the real-world fabric of this extraordinary story that it becomes natural and plausible. Among the author's role models in the genre were Erin Morgenstern, Eowyn Ivey, Ali Shaw and Audrey Niffenegger. Sophie is out for a walk in Hamburg's Municipal Park with James, her Labrador Retriever. She encounters Oliver, a young man sitting on a tree stump crying bitterly. He seems to be desperate. When she asks him what's wrong, he claims to be the Fall personified, and that he is frantic because he has lost the ability to usher in the season and all the changes that come with it. It is already October. The leaves should have started to fall long ago. If Oliver won't succeed in finally initiating fall, all of nature is in jeopardy. Sophie decides to help the stranger. Together they try to find a way for Oliver to regain his power. It doesn't take long for Sophie to fall in love with him. During their search, they discover not only the true nature of seasons, but also how the seasons relate to all human feelings.

Book excerpt: From BookTok sensation and New York Times bestselling author Penelope Douglas comes a riveting companion novel to Bully. This is Jared’s story.... Have you ever been so angry that hitting things felt good? Or numb to all emotions? The past few years have been like that for me. Traveling between fury and indifference with no stops in between. Some people hate me for it, while others are scared of me. But none of them can hurt me, because I don't care about anything or anyone. Except Tatum. I love her so much that I hate her. I hate that I can't let her go. We used to be friends, but I found out that I couldn't trust her—or anyone else. So I hurt her. I pushed her away. But I still need her. She centers me. Engaging her, challenging her, pushing her—it’s the one last part of me that feels anything anymore. But then she went and screwed everything up. She left for a year and came back a different girl. Now, when I push, she pushes back...and I’m not sure either one of us will ever be the same.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's not always about how we fall- it's about where we end up once we land. I remember the very first time I laid eyes on Cole Lincoln. It still feels like yesterday when he stumbled into my life with his messy brown hair and dark eyes. Even though I was only ten years old at the time, I knew right then and there that he was going to change everything. From that point on Cole and I were always together-inseparable-and I naively believed we'd be best friends forever. But forever didn't last nearly as long as I expected. We grew up and grew apart, life driving the distance between us, but my love for Cole never faltered. Even long after he moved away, leaving me and our little town behind, I still carried a piece of him with me every single day. Because Cole wasn't just my childhood best friend- the boy who knew me better than anyone else in the whole world. He was also my first love- a part of my very core. When a tragic death brings us face to face again after six years, every single memory comes rushing to the surface. Only this is not the boy I fell in love with all those years ago. The man before me is hardened, intimidating, and so damn sexy I practically melt when those dark eyes meet mine for the first time in six years. And like the first time he walked into my life, I know with complete certainty that everything is about to change. How We Fall is a STANDALONE Romance Novel.

Book excerpt: Eve dared. . . Eve, with passion that overruled her total innocence, ran away from home to live in unrepentant sin; won stardom singing on the stage of the Parisian music halls before Worlds War I; married into the world of international diplomacy; and become the greatest lady Champagne. Eve's younger daughter, Freddy, inherited all of her mother's recklessness. Growing up in California, she became a pilot by sixteen; throughout World War II she ferried war planes in Britain--a glorious redhead who captured men with one humorous, challenging glance. Eve's elder daughter, Delphine, exquisite, gifted, and wild, romped through the nightlife of Hollywood of the thirties. On a whim, she made a screen test in Paris and soon found herself a great star of French films. She chose to risk her life in occupied France because of a love that transformed her frivolity into courage.

Download or read book Sleep written by Amelia Rosselli and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2023-11-07 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major, career-spanning collection of an Italian master's poetry in English, gathered together for the first time. Amelia Rosselli is one of the great poets of postwar Italy. She was also a musician and musicologist, close to John Cage and Karlheinz Stockhausen, and she waged a lifelong battle against depression. The child of Carlo Rosselli, a significant anti-fascist intellectual who was assassinated with his brother Nello in 1937, Amelia grew up in exile and attended high school in Mamaroneck, New York. English poetry, especially the lyrics and sonnets of Shakespeare and the Elizabethans, became a prime reference for her own poetry, which combines modernist experimentation with variations on more traditional forms. The elaborate, archaic, yet thoroughly modern poems, at once stumbling and singing, that Rosselli composed in English and gathered under the title Sleep are a beautiful and illuminating part of her work. Six of the poems were published by John Ashbery in the 1960s but have otherwise been unavailable to English readers. They are published here for the first time outside of Italy.
