Book excerpt: Both airborne & ground hyperspectral surveys have recently been undertaken as potential exploration methods for a variety of mineral deposit types in glaciated regions. This paper reviews a project that aims to summarize the surficial geology & glacial stratigraphy in the Lac de Gras kimberlite field in order to assess hyperspectral ground surveys as a drift prospecting technique for kimberlite in an area with varied overburden thickness. It describes the area's regional geology & glacial history, the reasons for lack of kimberlite indicator minerals above some kimberlite pipes, and the spectral reflectance response of bedrock exposures, kimberlite, and various till samples collected in the area. Limitations of using spectral reflectance data in drift prospecting are also discussed.

Book excerpt: In 1996, the Terrain Sciences Division mapped the surficial geology of the northern Contwoyto Lake map area in the Northwest Territories, collecting 112 samples from the northern half of the area for geochemical analysis and 25 additional samples for regional kimberlite indicator mineral and gold grain analyses. The purposes of this report are: to release regional geochemical and gold grain data obtained; to summarize information on surficial materials and glacial history relevant to interpretation of the geochemical data; and to establish regional background concentrations of selected trace and minor elements for mineral exploration and environmental baseline studies. Report contents include background on the area's bedrock and surficial geology; information on sample locations and analytical methods; results of geochemical analyses of the clay and silt-plus- clay fractions of the samples; gold grain counts; quality control data; summary statistics and histograms; and dot maps showing distribution of concentrations of selected elements.
