Book excerpt: A word of warning: Do NOT purchase this novel if you intend reading the Tilbert trilogy novels (see below). Reading this novel will somewhat spoil the trilogy. After finishing the Tilbert trilogy so long ago, and then voyaging back there via Where on Earth, I felt I had wrapped it up. Then the Bossley series of stories came along. That was it, yes? There was no more to say about Tilbert. But wait. The earliest time period we explore with Tilbert is when he was in his mid twenties. What happened before that time? We know about his father and mother from Books 1 and 2 of the trilogy. We heard in Book 3 that he first timejumped when he was young, to impress his father, and that he was off timejumping when his father was killed. That's about all we know. What was his childhood like? How did he cope in those first years within palace life without a mother, and with a father who seemed to be constantly off timejumping? You will find these answers, and many more, in this novel, as we explore Tilbert's early life, right up to the time he finally confronts his nemesis. You will discover why Tilbert is the way he is, and you finally discover how he came to be in that gully, bloodied and bruised, before he met Mrs Stickles for the first time. Yes, the adorable old dimwit is back too, as well as some others we first met in Book One, and some we did not personally meet back then. The Tilbert Trilogy:A Timeless AdventureTime for TruthsComing of Age.Follow-up novel to the trilogy:The Beginning.Companion novel:Where on Earth.Companion novellas in the Bossley Series:The Centurian Courier (short story)On Trebulas ThreeHarold and DaphneWhere Did They Go?Kathleen and Isabel.

Book Conquest of the Useless

Download or read book Conquest of the Useless written by Werner Herzog and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2010-07-27 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Hypnotic….It is ever tempting to try to fathom his restless spirit and his determination to challenge fate.” —Janet Maslin, New York Times Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man) is one of the most revered and enigmatic filmmakers of our time, and Fitzcarraldo is one of his most honored and admired films. More than just Herzog’s journal of the making of the monumental, problematical motion picture, which involved, among other things, major cast changes and reshoots, and the hauling (without the use of special effects) of a 360-ton steamship over a mountain , Conquest of the Useless is a work of art unto itself, an Amazonian fever dream that emerged from the delirium of the jungle. With fascinating observations about crew and players—including Herzog’s lead, the somewhat demented internationally renowned star Klaus Kinski—and breathtaking insights into the filmmaking process that are uniquely Werner Herzog, Conquest of the Useless is an eye-opening look into the mind of a cinematic master.

Download or read book Inventing Africa written by Robin Derricourt and published by Pluto Press. This book was released on 2011-04-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inventing Africa is a critical account of narratives which have selectively interpreted and misinterpreted the continent's deep past. Writers have created alluring images of lost cities, vast prehistoric migrations and golden ages of past civilizations. Debates continue on the African origins of humankind, the contributions of ancient Egypt to the world and Africa's importance to global history. Images of "Africa," simplifying a complex and diverse continent, have existed from ancient Mediterranean worlds, slave trading nations and colonial powers to today's political elites, ecotourists and aid-givers. Robin Derricourt draws on his background as publisher and practitioner in archaeology and history to explore the limits and the dangers of simplifications, arguing -- as with Said's concept of "Orientalism" -- that ambitious ideas can delude or oppress as well as inform. Defending Africa against some of the grand narratives that have been imposed upon its peoples, Inventing Africa will spark new debates in the history of Africa and of archaeology.

Book India s Shakespeare

  • Author : Poonam Trivedi
  • Publisher : University of Delaware Press
  • Release : 2005
  • ISBN : 9780874138818
  • Pages : 316 pages

Download or read book India s Shakespeare written by Poonam Trivedi and published by University of Delaware Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a collection on the diverse aspects of the interaction between Shakespeare and India, a process embedded in the contradictions of colonialism - of simultaneous submission and resistance. The essays, grouped around the key issues of translation, interpretation, and performance, deal with how the plays were taught, translated, and adapted, as well as the literary, social, and political implications of this absorption into the cultural fabric of India. They also look at the other side, what India meant to Shakespeare. Further, they document how the performance of Shakespeare both colonized and catalyzed Indian theater - being staged in English in schools, in translation in various parts of the country, through acculturation into indigenous theater forms and Hindi cinema. The book highlights, and thus rereads, not just one of the longest and most widespread interactions between a Western author and the East but also part of the colonial and postcolonial history of India. Poonam Trivedi is a Reader in English at Indraprastha College, University of Delhi. Now retired, Dennis Bartholomeusz was Reader in English literature at Monash University in Melbourne.

Book Prismatic Translation

Download or read book Prismatic Translation written by Matthew Reynolds and published by Legenda. This book was released on 2019-12-30 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Translation can be seen as producing a text in one language that will count as equivalent to a text in another. It can also be seen as a release of multiple signifying possibilities, an opening of the source text to Language in all its plurality. The first view is underpinned by the regime of European standard languages which can be lined up in bilingual dictionaries, by the technology of the printed book, and by the need for regulated communication in political, academic and legal contexts. The second view is most at home in multilingual cultures, in circumstances where language is not standardised (e.g., minority and dialectal communities, and oral cultures), in the fluidity of electronic text, and in literature. The first view sees translation as a channel; the second as a prism. This volume explores prismatic modes of translation in ancient Egypt, contemporary Taiwan, twentieth-century Hungary, early modern India, and elsewhere. It gives attention to experimental literary writing, to the politics of language, to the practices of scholarship, and to the multiplying possibilities created by digital media. It charts the recent growth of prismatic modes in anglophone literary translation and translational literature; and it offers a new theorisation of the phenomenon and its agonistic relation to the 'channel' view. Prismatic Translation is an essential intervention in a rapidly changing field.
