Book tienne Chauvin 1640 1725 and his Lexicon philosophicum

Download or read book tienne Chauvin 1640 1725 and his Lexicon philosophicum written by Giuliano Gasparri and published by Georg Olms Verlag. This book was released on 2018-06-01 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. From Walch’s Philosophisches Lexicon to Zedler’s Universal-Lexicon, from Diderot’s and D’Alembert’s Encyclopédie to the Encyclopaedia Britannica, all major early modern dictionaries and encyclopedias incorporate some of the definitions given by the Huguenot savant Étienne Chauvin (1640 - 1725) in the two editions of his Lexicon philosophicum (1692 and 1713). For the first time, Chauvin placed the scholastic tradition side by side with the theories of new thinkers like Descartes, Gassendi and their followers. His work covers natural philosophy extensively, describing scientific instruments and experiments. Surprisingly enough, the complex architecture of Chauvin’s dictionary, its sources, and its fortune have never been thoroughly investigated before. The present, broad study in the history of philosophical terminology and ideas casts light on the culture of the “République des lettres” between the end of the seventeenth and the beginning of the eighteenth century. It deals with metaphysics, logic, moral, and anthropological themes, and the clash between ancient and modern visions of nature.

Download or read book Bibliographia Cartesiana written by Gregor Sebba and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1964-07-31 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a new type of working tool for Cartesian studies. It presents the literature of the last 160 years in alphabetical order (Part Two), combined with a systematic analytical survey (Part One) and a detailed topical index to the whole (Part Three). This organization makes it possible to turn bibliogra phy from a repository of references into a workshop of research. The system atic survey of Part One and the topical index of Part Three, together, offer a mise au point of Descartes studies over their full historical and topical range. The results have often been surprising and illuminating to the author, and if his experience is any guide, the reader, too, will begin to wonder about certain seemingly well-settled points, or marvel at the Protean shapes which our elusive philosopher assumes when mighty commentators force him to reveal his true nature. A work which has been in the making for fifteen years must show the traces of expansion in scope, and changes in evaluation. Bibliographia cartesiana amends my Descartes chapter in A Critical Bibliography of French Literature, v. 3, 1961 (see no. I9a), and supersedes an earlier version of Parts One and Two, published in 1959 under the main title Descartes and his Philosophy, v. 1 (set: no. I8a). Part I (Introduction to Descartes Studies) divides the field into eleven broad areas.

Book Treatise on the Apparitions of Spirits and on Vampires Or Revenants of Hungary Moravia Et Al

This book was released on 2021-03-19 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traité sur les apparitions des esprits et sur les vampires ou de revnants. A 1700's treatise surfaced two centuries ago regarding the supernatural and scientific phenomenon that plagued Europe in an era when Magic, witchcraft, instances of haunting, and even cases of vampires were recorded in judicial and imperial documentation. It was during the age of reason when a Black Monk from the Benedictine Order of the 18th century, penned a work that would become one of the most influential and controversial works of his time. A plethora of cases regarding events in the supernatural had plagued mankind with fear and mystery throughout history, many inhabitants to the regions of Europe came under an epidemic of social hysteria which stemmed from reports of corpses rising from their graves, killing and sucking the blood of victims inhabiting small villages or visitations and the haunting of ghosts, evil spirits and demons. The Black Monk, Abbot Don Augustin Calmet tasked himself with the study of these real and historically documented reports for the purpose of providing the public with the rules to determine a claim's legitimacy through philosophical reasoning of religious and scientific examination that was approved by the King of France in 1746. This work provides an in-depth look into the history of most superstitions, mythologies, and the analysis of events depicted in the ancient texts of various religions and historically renowned cases. Calmet lays out the rules for determining the fraudulence of purported claims and distinguishes them from what may soundly be considered real at the time, providing a "how to" manual when dealing with or investigating occult matters in witchcraft, ghosts, vampires and demonic possessions. This new edition includes translations from the French and Italian works that are being published for the first time! Including the missing letters, detailed notes, definitions, and translations of Latin, Italian and French phrases quotes and citations.

Book The Preface to Chambers s Cyclopaedia

Download or read book The Preface to Chambers s Cyclopaedia written by Ephraïm Chambers and published by . This book was released on 2020-03 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition of Chamber's Preface includes both his summary Circle of Knowledge and, as an appendix, his completely detailed Circle of Knowledge. Endnotes to the detailed Circle supply extracts from the Cyclopædia to explain hundreds of terms that are likely to be unfamiliar to today's reader. This edition is coordinated with Michel Malherbe's French translation, which appeared in Recherches sur Diderot et sur l'Encyclopédie (2004).This edition has been especially prepared for students. Three centuries ago, a British professional like Ephraïm Chambers could make generous assumptions about the literacy and literary knowledge of his readers as well as their historical consciousness. Unfortunately, those assumptions are today seldom warranted. This edition addresses lacunae in a student's knowledge of the basic elements?who, what, where, and when?from which Chambers drew to write the Preface to his Cyclopædia. This short book is particularly suited to students taking introductory, survey, or matriculation courses in lexicography?especially historical lexicography?, metalexicography, intellectual history, and horismology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents the first in a four-volume series, a daring project by CEU Press which presents the most important texts that triggered and shaped the processes of nation-building in the many countries of Central and Southeast Europe. The series brings together scholars from Austria, Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, the Republic of Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Serbia and Montenegro, Slovakia, Slovenia and Turkey. The editors have created a new interpretative synthesis that challenges the self-centered and "isolationist" historical narratives and educational canons prevalent in the region, in the spirit of of "coming to terms with the past." The main aim of the venture is to confront 'mainstream' and seemingly successful national discourses with each other, thus creating a space for analyzing those narratives of identity which became institutionalized as "national canons." The series will broaden the field of possible comparisons of the respective national cultures.
