Book excerpt: When originally published in 1993, this was the first bibliography of the secondary literature on Tieck. Given as much secondary literature surrounding Tieck’s life and works has been generated outside of his native Germany as within, this bibliography focuses particularly on his life and work from an international perspective. In order to make the information surrounding Tieck accessible, the book provides a detailed table of contents, with corresponding text divisions, rather than a subject index. It therefore highlights Tieck’s achievements in their various national contexts so that not only students of German can get an accurate feel for Tieck’s versatility and range.

Book The Crises of Language and Dead Signs in Ludwig Tieck s Prose Fiction

Download or read book The Crises of Language and Dead Signs in Ludwig Tieck s Prose Fiction written by William Crisman and published by Camden House. This book was released on 1996 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Critical account of the works of Ludwig Tieck, the German Romantic writer, from a linguistic viewpoint. Although twentieth-century literary criticism has focused on language as a topic of discussion, critical evalutions of Romanticism and Romantic writers rarely deal with it in terms derived from the philosophy of language. This book evaluates the most prolific German Romanticist, Ludwig Tieck (1773-1853), from such a linguistic viewpoint, arguing that concerns in his work can be seen as forerunners of later language analysis, from speech-act theory to theories of reference. It covers Tieck's whole career, from his youth to his final novel, Vittoria Accorombona, providing a comprehensive analysis of this major author's work; it will also be of interest to those interested in the linguistic aspects of Romanticism.

Book The Romantic Movement

Download or read book The Romantic Movement written by Alan Menhennet and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-24 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1981. This study concentrates on the exponents of the central period of German Romanticism, regarding as characteristic the mode in which the poet’s self becomes active only in response to external stimuli, most notably those of landscape. The author traces the main strands of thought and interests that preoccupy Romantic writers; the revolutionary attitude that is yet differentiated from that of writers like Byron by the lack of emphasis on individualism, the dualism of the bourgeois world and the ‘inner self’, the interest in language as an agency for the regeneration of the German spirit, and the concentration on folk-themes and the idea of Wanderung. This title will be of interest to students of literature.

Book Imagination in German Romanticism

Download or read book Imagination in German Romanticism written by Jeanne Riou and published by Peter Lang Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In German Romanticism, the imagination is the site of the encounter between the subject and its environment; this book examines that encounter. Dealing with both literary and philosophical texts, it argues that the Romantic imagination performs a critique of rationalism. In reflecting on the fragmentary, the Romantics require the reader to both imagine and to question this as a hermeneutic process. As such, they understand writing to be an experiment in memory, both individual and cultural. This book is a study of the writings of E.T.A. Hoffmann, Novalis, Tieck and also of the utopian project of Romanticism itself. Methodologically, it is informed by what Foucault termed the archaeological approach to discourse as well as by psychoanalysis and literary theory. Examining points of contact as well of divergence between Kantian epistemology and Romantic nature philosophy, it also highlights the correspondences between literature, philosophy and science. Above all, it treats Romanticism as an experiment in the portrayal of ambivalent modern identity.

Book Romanticism in Theory

Download or read book Romanticism in Theory written by Lis Møller and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wide spectrum of critical approaches to the works of German, English, American, French, and Scandinavian Romantic writers is displayed in these fifteen essays. Of primary importance to the contributors is the correlation between literature, art and theory in romantic writing; they also discuss the interstices between Romanticism and 20th century theory. The work of Novalis, Schelling, Nietzsche and Foucault, Coleridge and Humboldt, Atterbom, Hoffmann, Wordsworth and Turner, Carus, Kierkegaard, Schlegal, Dickinson and Whitman, Blake, Tieck, Grimm, Keats, and De Quincey are places in the context of modern theoretical paradigms. These chapters are grouped under thematic headings: Language and semiotics; Image, imagery, and imagination; Dreatasy and the unconscious; and History and intertext. This anthology will be of great value to students and scholars interested in Romantic aesthetic and literary theory as well as the boundaries between literature, theory and philosophy.

It identifies the fundamental similarities between Romantic writing in England, France and Germany as well as their differences brought about by divergent literary and social backgrounds. The book is concluded by a review of the problems that arise from a simple definition of Romanticism.

Book Romantic Irony

Download or read book Romantic Irony written by Frederick Garber and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1988-01-01 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first collaborative international reading of irony as a major phenomenon in Romantic art and thought. The volume identifies key predecessor moments that excited Romantic authors and the emergence of a distinctly Romantic theory and practice of irony spreading to all literary genres. Not only the influential pioneer German, British, and French varieties, but also manifestations in northern, eastern, and southern parts of Europe as well as in North America, are considered. A set of concluding “syntheses” treat the shaping power of Romantic irony in narrative modes, music, the fine arts, and theater – innovations that will deeply influence Modernism. Thus the cross-cultural and interdisciplinary approach elaborated in the twenty chapters of Romantic Irony, as lead volume in the five-volume Romanticism series, establishes a significant new range for comparative literature studies in dealing with a complex literary movement. SPECIAL OFFER: 30% discount for a complete set order (5 vols.).The Romanticism series in the Comparative History of Literatures in European Languages is the result of a remarkable international collaboration. The editorial team coordinated the efforts of over 100 experts from more than two dozen countries to produce five independently conceived, yet interrelated volumes that show not only how Romanticism developed and spread in its principal European homelands and throughout the New World, but also the ways in which the affected literatures in reaction to Romanticism have redefined themselves on into Modernism. A glance at the index of each volume quickly reveals the extraordinary richness of the series' total contents. Romantic Irony sets the broader experimental parameters of comparison by concentrating on the myriad expressions of “irony” as one of the major impulses in the Romantic philosophical and artistic revolution, and by combining cross-cultural and interdisciplinary studies with special attention also to literatures in less widely diffused language streams. Romantic Drama traces creative innovations that deeply altered the understanding of genre at large, fed popular imagination through vehicles like the opera, and laid the foundations for a modernist theater of the absurd. Romantic Poetry demonstrates deep patterns and a sharing of crucial themes of the revolutionary age which underlie the lyrical expression that flourished in so many languages and environments. Nonfictional Romantic Prose assists us in coping with the vast array of writings from the personal and intimate sphere to modes of public discourse, including Romanticism's own self-commentary in theoretical statements on the arts, society, life, the sciences, and more. Nor are the discursive dimensions of imaginative literature neglected in the closing volume, Romantic Prose Fiction, where the basic Romantic themes and story types (the romance, novel, novella, short story, and other narrative forms) are considered throughout Europe and the New World. This enormous realm is seen not just in terms of Romantic theorizing, but in the light of the impact of Romantic ideas and narration on later generations. As an aid to readers, the introduction to Romantic Prose Fiction explains the relationships among the volumes in the series and carries a listing of their tables of contents in an appendix. No other series exists comparable to these volumes which treat the entirety of Romanticism as a cultural happening across the whole breadth of the “Old” and “New” Worlds and thus render a complex picture of European spiritual strivings in the late eighteenth and the nineteenth centuries, a heritage still very close to our age.

Book From Goethe to Gundolf

Download or read book From Goethe to Gundolf written by Roger Paulin and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2021-08-24 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Goethe to Gundolf: Essays on German Literature and Culture is a collection of Roger Paulin’s groundbreaking essays, spanning the last forty years. The work represents his major research interests of Romanticism and the reception of Shakespeare in Germany, but also explores a broader range of themes, from poetry and the public memorialization of poets to fairy stories - all meticulously researched, yet highly accessible. As a comprehensive examination of German literary history in the period 1700-1900, the collection not only includes accounts of the lives and work of Goethe, Schiller, the Schlegels, and Gundolf (amongst others), serving to nuance our understanding of these figures in history, but also considers diverse (and often underexplored) topics, from academic freedom to the rise of travel literature. The essays have been reformulated, corrected, and updated to add references to recent works. However, the core foundations of the originals remain, and just as when they were first published, the value of these essays – to researchers, students, and all those who are interested in German literary history – cannot be overstated.

Book Assembly and its Other in German Romantic Literature and Thought

Download or read book Assembly and its Other in German Romantic Literature and Thought written by Robert E. Mottram and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2022-10-15 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays turns on a shift in Romantic studies from viewing wholeness as an absolute value to critiquing it as a limiting construction. Wholeness and its concomitant sense of harmony, rather than a natural given, is a construct that was assembled and disassembled, theorized and criticized, by diverse authors and artists in a wide variety of disciplines and socio-historical contexts, and instrumentalized for diverse purposes. The plurality of these constructions – that Goethe’s Urpflanze, for example, is not synonymous with Friedrich Schlegel’s universal progressive poetry – is but one manifestation of how “assembly” strives but fails to be absolute. The “other” of assembly referenced in the title suggests two divergent but inseparable tendencies: firstly, how a construction can take on the appearance of a natural given; and secondly, how assemblages of wholeness harbor within themselves their own principle of disarticulation. These two tendencies underlie the “inexhaustible” character of Romantic “gatherings”. As a construction passes itself off as nature, the natural fails to account for itself as a whole. The scope of this volume encompasses the establishment, mapping, and interrogation of assembly and its other in German Romanticism through interdisciplinary studies on literature, aesthetics, philosophy, drama, music, synaesthesia, mathematics, science, and exploration.
