In order to further understand the effects topographic shape plays, the effect of asymmetry on internal waves is investigated.

Tall ridges that are nominally two-dimensional (2-D) are sites of particularly strong generation. The subsequent dissipation of internal tides contributes to ocean mixing, thereby playing an important role in the circulation of the ocean. Strong internal tides can also evolve into internal wave solitons, which affect acoustic communication, offshore structures and submarine navigation. This thesis addresses the generation of internal tides by tall submarine ridges using a combined analytical and experimental approach. The first part of the thesis is an experimental investigation of a pre-existing Green function formulation for internal tide generation by a tall symmetric ridge in a uniform density stratification. A modal decomposition technique was developed to characterize the structure of the experimental wave fields generated by 2D model topographies in a specially configured wave tank. The theory accurately predicts the low mode structure of internal tides, and reasonably predicts the conversion rate of internal tides infinite tidal excursion regimes, for which the emergence of non-linearities was notable in the laboratory. In the second part of the thesis, the Green function method is advanced for asymmetric and multiple ridges in weakly non-uniform stratifications akin to realistic ocean situations. A preliminary investigation in uniform stratification with canonical asymmetric and double ridges reveals asymmetry in the internal tide that can be very sensitive to the geometric configuration. This approach is then used with realistic topography and stratification data to predict the internal tide generated by the ridges at Hawaii and at the Luzon Strait. Despite the assumption of two-dimensionality, there is remarkably good agreement between field data, simulations and the new theory for the magnitude, asymmetry and modal content of the internal tide at these sites. The final part of the thesis investigates the possibility of internal wave attractors in the valley of double-ridge configurations. A one-dimensional map is developed to identify the existence and stability of attractors as a function of the ridge geometry. The Green function method is further advanced to include a viscous correction to balance energy focusing and dissipation along an attracting orbit of internal wave rays, and very good agreement is obtained between experiment and theory, even in the presence of an attractor.

The fluctuations of the depth of an isotherm were measured with a three-element horizontal array attached to a stable platform. The waves are characterized as a broad band phenomenon with a continuous distribution in frequency. For short intervals of time, a narrow frequency band within the continuum is adequately described as a horizontally plane wave of a single vertical mode. Furthermore, this simplified structure is stationary over time spans of several days. High modes are present in the low frequency waves. Above 4 cycles per hour, however, the first mode predominates. The spectral shape is consistent with the shear limited equilibrium spectrum proposed by Phillips (1966). In addition, the predominance of the first mode at high frequencies further emphasizes the importance of shear instability in internal wave propagation. The horizontal properties of the wave field indicate well-defined directions of narrow-band propagation. These directions and the dispersive properties of the propagation have led to the identification of local topographic features in generating areas of internal waves. (Author).

A three-dimensional nonhydrostatic numerical model is used to study the generation of internal wave energy by barotropic tidal flow over a steep ridge. Numerical experiments are carried out over ridges of three different heights in an ocean with strong stratification at shallow depths. The topographic width, stratification, and amplitude of the barotropic tide are varied to examine the dependence of the normalized energy flux on the slope parameter, the ratio of the ridge slope to that of the wave beam. Over a tall ridge reaching the strongly stratified depths of the water column, the non-dimensional energy flux increases with the slope parameter and becomes constant when the slope parameter exceeds a critical value. For a small ridge confined at weakly stratified depths, the non-dimensional energy flux reaches a maximum with increase in the slope parameter but decreases with further increase in the slope parameter. The two regimes of dependence on the slope parameter can be described in terms of a local Froude number. The results show that internal wave generation is most efficient when the ridge is steep and the ridge top reaches the strongly stratified upper ocean. Comparison between the parameterization scheme and the estimated energy flux at several locations in the ocean shows reasonable agreement. The non-dimensional relation provides a way to estimate the baroclinic energy flux using topographic scales, stratification, and strength of the barotropic tides in the ocean.
