Book excerpt: Eccentric binary systems are ubiquitous. They appear in many astrophysical contexts, ranging from migrating giant planets to coalescing neutron star (NS) binaries. In a highly eccentric binary, the separation between the two bodies can vary greatly over the course of an orbit. Yet any binary with a small minimum separation (even if it lasts a scant fraction of an orbit) can be shaped dramatically by the tidal distortion and heating of one or both bodies. Tides are commonly treated in a parameterized way for convenience. In truth, a body's efficiency at dissipating energy depends strongly on its structure and orbit. This dissertation explores how the nuances of tidal physics can dramatically alter the expected orbital evolution of many types of binary systems. In Chapter 2, I demonstrate that a white dwarf (WD) on an eccentric orbit around a massive black hole (MBH) can experience significant tidal heating, long before it is torn apart by the tidal force of the BH. The WD-MBH pairing is especially interesting because the inevitable outcome -- the tidal disruption of the WD -- will be visible at cosmological distances, but only if the BH mass is less than 100,000 solar masses. These events could constrain the mass function of intermediate mass to massive BHs. In Chapter 3, I develop a simple model that captures the coupled evolution of a binary orbit and tidally excited oscillations in one (or both) of its components. I derive the conditions under which the oscillations can grow chaotically over successive orbits, and explore how the damping of these oscillations affects long-term orbital evolution. Chapter 4 applies the model from Chapter 3 to the high-eccentricity migration of giant planets. I study how, when a giant planet is excited onto a highly eccentric orbit, chaotic tides can rapidly drain energy from the orbit and shrink the semi-major axis. I demonstrate that chaotic tides can resolve many of the difficulties facing the high-eccentricity migration theory of hot Jupiter formation. In Chapter 5, I analyze the role of tides in the coalescence of an eccentric neutron star binary. Measuring the tidal response of neutron stars would help to unveil their equation of state. Lastly, in Chapters 6 and 7, I develop a treatment for tidal dissipation via turbulent viscosity in a star with a convective envelope in an eccentric orbit and apply this formalism to pre-common envelope binaries with massive stars. As the massive star evolves off of the main sequence and develops a deep convective envelope, viscous dissipation in the star circularizes and shrinks the binary. However, I find that, in many cases, tidal dissipation cannot circularize the orbit before the binary reaches Roche-lobe overflow.

The discriminating power of such tests depends, of course, on the range of information offered by the test objects. Single stars which move alone in space are now known to represent only a minority of objects constituting our Galaxy (cf. Chapter 1-2); and are, moreover, not very revealing of their basic physical characteristics - such as their masses or absolute dimensions. If there were no binary systems in the sky, the only star whose vital statistics would be fully known to us would be our Sun.

Dynamical tides arise from the excitation of non-hydrostatic waves within the stellar components, with tidal dissipation resulting from the damping of the excited waves. The wave frequencies, characteristics, and dissipative qualities vary greatly in different types of stellar systems, as does the resultant tidally induced evolution. The first few chapters of this thesis focus on the excitation and dissipation of gravity waves within white dwarfs (WDs) in compact binary systems. I find that gravity waves are excited at composition gradients within the WDs, and may reach non-linear amplitudes in the outer layers of the star. At sufficiently short orbital periods, the waves are strongly non-linear and will break in the envelope of the white dwarf, producing efficient tidal dissipation. I show that this tidal dissipation will cause WDs to be nearly synchronized upon gravitational radiation-driven orbital decay. Moreover, the dissipation will heat the envelope of the WD, substantially increasing its luminosity and potentially reigniting its hydrogen shell to create a tidally induced nova-like event. I also study the tidal excitation of stellar oscillation modes in eccentric binary systems and in triple star systems, and I compare my theory with recent Kepler observations. In eccentric binary systems such as KOI-54, the tidal forcing excites stellar oscillation modes at discrete multiples of the orbital frequency. The resulting orbital and spin evolution produced by the damping of these modes may lead to resonance lock- ing, in which a stellar oscillation mode remains nearly resonant with the tidal forcing, producing greatly enhanced tidal dissipation. In hierarchical triple star systems such as HD 181068, the orbital motion of the inner binary can excite pressure modes in a red giant tertiary component. No stable tidal equilibrium exists for these systems, and the dissipation of the modes can cause the orbit of the inner binary to decay. Lastly, I examine the oscillation mode spectrum of giant planets with a solid core. The rigidity of the core allows for the existence of shear modes which are confined to the solid core. In a rotating planet, the Coriolis force may cause substantial mixing between core shear modes and fundamental or pressure modes that propagate in the fluid envelope. The gravitational perturbations produced by these mixed modes can excite visible disturbances within a planetary ring system, and I compare our theoretical expectations with recent Cassini observations of waves in Saturn's rings.

Pringle Institute of Astronomy Madingley Road Cambridge England The 1970's can be described, in retrospect, as the "Decade of the Close Binary". Exciting observations with new technology, combined with classical work, both observational and theoretical, convinced the astronomical world that binary interaction of various kinds is not only interesting but common. Indeed, by 1975 almost anything unusual had a good chance of being interpreted as due to binary interaction. But astronomers are seldom overwhelmed by speculation, even their own, and solid observational work has confirmed or refuted such speculation, without regard to its plausibility. For instance, binarity has been found where it was perhaps least expected, in Barium stars, and refuted where it could most reasonably be expected, in Wolf-Rayets. Unfortunately, many other classes of potential binaries remain without the clearest evidence of binarity, for instance Be stars, symbiotics and blue stragglers. This Advanced Study Institute was held to commemorate John Whelan (1945-1981), whose scientific career, sadly cut short in its prime, did much to further the careful study, theoretical and observational, of close binaries, as well as to encourage the spirit of international friendship and collaboration. His own interests covered a greater field, but "Interacting Binaries" seemed a reasonable restriction. We publish here 15 review talks, which still do not cover the whole topic, although they range widely.
