Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ticket to Minto, Sohrab Homi Fracis's premier fiction collection, offers readers a passage to an unfamiliar destination-a world suspended between East and West, India and America, home and away. With piercing insight, Fracis expertly reveals the underlying differences between immersion in India's culture-Hindu, Muslim, or Parsi-and life as an Indian in America. Alternating between East and West, the stories in Ticket to Minto serve as companion pieces, interrelated across continents in both theme and content. A middle-aged man's search for love in Bombay is contrasted with an Indian American family's hopes for the marriage of their westernized daughter. A university student rushes to save the life of a servant in his homeland only to find his own life threatened while attending graduate school in America. Poignant and daring, Ticket to Minto underlines the harsh realization that the immigrant never truly arrives but is in constant limbo between two worlds. As one character relates, "There's a part of me that's American and a part that's Indian. I'm clear about that and comfortable with it, except that sometimes people want me to be just the one or the other."

Book excerpt: In this second volume of memoirs, wistfully entitled Ticket to Ride, Robert Bowman again draws on events and experiences from his interesting international legal and commercial consultancy career, which has spanned the last four decades. In so doing, he inexorably draws the reader into the highs and lows of working internationally at the sharp endwhere nothing is quite what it seems and every day throws up new challenges. In this volume of Dispatches from the Coal Face of Life, the reader relives the poignancy of the early and sudden death of Beatle John Lennon in New York city, the raw excitement and deadly confusion of a live shoot-out in Downtown New Orleans, a visit to the distant River Kwai on the Thai/Burmese border before the days of package tours take the traveler there, and a desolate trip to the Delta region of Nigeria. In this new splendidly entertaining volume, the reader climbs Diamond Head above Honolulu and travels on the famous Blue Train across the Karoo from Johannesburg to Cape Town and then goes across the sea to meet the ghost of Nelson Mandela on Robben Island before shooting the rapids and climbing a volcano in the southern Philippines, and then returning in triumph through the dramatic snowy scenery of Glacier National Park and the Rockies on Canadian Pacific 1090. Book Environmental Impact Assessment of Buildings

Download or read book Environmental Impact Assessment of Buildings written by Wahidul Biswas and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-02-05 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Special Issue covers a wide range of areas—including building orientation, service life, use of photocatalytically active structures and PV facades, implications of transportation system, building types (i.e., high rise, multilevel, commercial, residential), life cycle assessment, and structural engineering—that need to be considered in the environmental impact assessment of buildings, and the chapters include case studies across the globe. Consideration of these strategies would help reduce energy and material consumption, environmental emissions, and waste generation associated with all phases of a building’s life cycle. Chapter 1 demonstrates that green star concrete exhibits the same structural properties as conventional concrete in Australia. Chapter 2 showed that the use of TiO2 as a photocatalyst on the surface of construction materials with a suitable stable binding agent, such as aggregates, would enable building walls to absorb NOx from air. This study found that TiO2 has the potential to reduce ambient concentrations of NOx from areas where this pollutant becomes concentrated under solar irradiation. Chapter 3 presents the life cycle assessment of architecturally integrated glass–glass photovoltaics in building facades to find the appropriate material composition for a multicolored PV façade offering improved environmental performance. Chapter 4 shows that urban office buildings lacking appropriate orientation experienced indoor overheating. Chapter 5 details four modeling approaches that were implemented to estimate buildings’ response towards load shedding. Chapter 6 covers the life cycle GHG emissions of high-rise residential housing block to discover opportunities for environmental improvement. Chapter 7 discusses an LCA framework that took into account variation in the service life of buildings associated with the use of different types of materials. Chapter 8 presents a useful data mining algorithm to conduct life cycle asset management in residential developments built on transport systems.

Book India Under Morley and Minto

Download or read book India Under Morley and Minto written by M.N. Das and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-04-07 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The empire which Curzon left late in 1905 was different from what it had been at the close of the nineteenth century when he came to rule over it. After memorable events and political climax, the awakening upset the rulers’ concept of Indian peace. A revolutionary movement, wide in its appeal and full of idealism, generated an incompatibility in the traditional relations between ruler and ruled. This book, first published in 1964 and drawing extensively on the private papers of the main protagonists, examines the years of Indian administration directed by Morley and Minto.

Book excerpt: Mystery crime fiction written in the Golden Age of Murder "Readers in search of escapist entertainment need look no further." —Publishers Weekly 'There's more crime going on in Carey's Circus than in the whole underworld of London. Theft, immorality, blackmail—you'll find all the pretties here.' Seven Bengal tigers are the star attraction of Carey's Circus. Their trainer is the fearless Anton, whose work demands absolute fitness and the steadiest of nerves. When Anton is found lying dead in the tigers' cage, it seems that he has lost control and been mauled by the tigers—but Detective-Inspector Minto of Scotland Yard is not convinced. Minto's investigations lead him deep into the circus world of tents and caravans, clowns and acrobats, human and animal performers. No one is above suspicion. Carey, the circus-owner with a secret to hide; Dodo, the clown whose costume is scratched as if by a claw; and Lorimer, the trapeze artist jealous of his flirtatious wife—all come under Minto's scrutiny as the mystery deepens. This amusing and light-hearted novel from the golden age of British crime writing has long been neglected, and this new edition will help to restore Melville's reputation as an author of extremely entertaining detective fiction.
