Book excerpt: A penetrating study of passion, suffering, and loss from one of Norway’s most tenacious writers: National Book Award Finalist and PEN translation prize winner Hanne Ørstavik Celebrated throughout the world for her candor and sensitivity to the rhythms of language, Hanne Ørstavik is a leading light on the international stage. Ørstavik writes with “a compulsion for truth that feels like [her] very life force itself.” Laced with a tingling frankness, Ørstavik’s prose adheres so closely to the inner workings of its narrator’s mind as to nearly undo itself. In Martin Aitken’s translation, Ørstavik’s piercing story sings. Ti Amo brings a new, deeply personal approach, as the novel is based in Ørstavik’s own experience of losing her Italian husband to cancer. By facing loss directly, she includes readers in an experience that many face in isolation. Written and set in the early months of 2020, its themes of loss and suffering are particularly well suited for a time of international mourning. What can be found within a gaze? What lies inside a painting or behind a handful of repeated words? These are the questions that haunt our unnamed narrator as she tends to her husband, stricken with cancer, in the final months of his life. She examines the elements of their life together: their Vietnamese rose-colored folding table where they eat their meals, each of the New Year’s Eves they’ve shared, their friendships, and their most intimate exchanges. With everything in flux, she searches for the facets that will remain.
Download or read book First Trilogy about Sylow Theory in Locally Finite Groups written by Felix F. Flemisch and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2023-11-15 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part 1 (ISBN 978-3-7568-0801-4) of the Trilogy is based on the BoD-Book "Characterising locally finite groups satisfying the strong Sylow Theorem for the prime p - Revised edition" (see ISBN 978-3-7562-3416-5). The First edition of Part 1 (see ISBN 978-3-7543-6087-3) removes the highlights in light green of the Revised edition, adds 14 pages to the AGTA paper and 10 pages to the Revised edition. It includes Reference [11] resp. [10] as Appendix 1 resp. Appendix 2 and calls to mind Professor Otto H. Kegel's contribution to the conference Ischia Group Theory 2016. The Second edition introduces a uniform page numbering, adds page numbers to the appendices, improves 19 pages, adds Pages 109 to 112 and a Table of Contents. Part 2 (ISBN 978-3-7543-3642-8) of the Trilogy is based on the author's research paper "About the Strong Sylow Theorem for the Prime p in Simple Locally Finite Groups". We first give an overview of simple locally finite groups and reduce their Sylow theory for the prime p to a conjecture of Prof. Otto H. Kegel about the rank-unbounded ones of the 19 known families of finite simple groups. Part 2 introduces a new scheme to describe the 19 families, the family T of types, defines the rank of each type, and emphasises the rôle of Kegel covers. This part presents a unified picture of known results and is the reason why our title starts with "About". We then apply new ideas to prove the conjecture for the alternating groups (see Page ii). Thereupon we remember Kegel covers and *-sequences. Finally we suggest a plan how to prove the conjecture step-by-step which leads to further conjectures thereby unifying Sylow theory in locally finite simple groups with Sylow theory in locally finite and p-soluble groups. In Part 3 (ISBN 978-3-7578-6001-1) of the Trilogy we continue the program begun in [10] to optimise along the way 1) its Theorem about the first type "An" of infinite families of finite simple groups step-by-step to further types by proving it for the second type "A = PSLn". We start with proving the Conjecture 2 of [10] about the General Linear Groups by using new ideas (see Page ii), and then break down this insight to the Special Linear and the PSL Groups. We close with suggestions for future research regarding the remaining rank-unbounded types (the "Classical Groups") and the way 2), the (locally) finite and p-soluble groups, and Augustin-Louis Cauchy's and Évariste Galois' contributions to Sylow theory in finite groups.

Flemisch and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2023-11-27 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Part 3 of the First Trilogy "Characterising Locally Finite Groups Satisfying the Strong Sylow Theorem for the Prime p" & "About the Strong Sylow Theorem for the Prime p in Simple Locally Finite Groups" & "The Strong Sylow Theorem for the Prime p in Projective Special Linear Locally Finite Groups" we continue the program begun in [10] to optimise along the way 1) its beautiful Theorem about the first type "An" of infinite families of finite simple groups step-by-step to further types by proving it for the second type "A = PSLn". We start with proving the beautiful Conjecture 2 of [10] about the General Linear Groups over (commutative) locally finite fields, stating that their rank is bounded in terms of their p-uniqueness, and then break down this insight to the Special Linear Groups and the Projective Special Linear (PSL) Groups over locally finite fields. We close with suggestions for future research -> regarding the remaining rank-unbounded types (the "Classical Groups") and the way 2), -> regarding the (locally) finite and p-soluble groups, and -> regarding Augustin-Louis Cauchy's and Évariste Galois' contributions to Sylow theory in finite groups, which culminate in the announcement of a Second Trilogy.
Download or read book E pensare che a malapena scrivevo cartoline written by William Farnè and published by Booksprint. This book was released on 2019-09-12 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Download or read book The Problems of Literary Translation written by Maria T. Sanchez and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the various linguistic and cultural problems which point towards the practical impossibility of conveying in one language exactly what was originally said in another. The author provides an exhaustive discussion of Spanish translations from English texts, including non-standard registers. Equivalence across languages, that most elusive of terms in the whole theory of translation, is discussed in terms of linguistic equivalence, textual equivalence, cultural equivalence and pragmatic equivalence. Other aspects studied include how translation has been perceived over the centuries, the differences and the similarities between a writer and a translator, plus a detailed examination of translation as process, all of which bring the problems of literary translation into perspective.

Download or read book Venus of Empire written by Flora Fraser and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2012-03-11 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Fraser cleverly contrasts Pauline's callous offloading of successive lovers ... The success of a biography of an un-improving subject like this is whether or not we miss them at its close ... Pauline was clearly irresistible company' Literary Review Celebrated for her looks, notorious for her passions, immortalised by Antonio Canova's statue and always deeply loyal to her brother, Pauline Bonaparte Borghese is a fascinating figure. At the turn of the nineteenth century she was considered by many to be the most beautiful woman in Europe. She shocked the continent with the boldness of her love affairs, her opulent wardrobe and jewels and, most famously, her decision to pose nearly nude for Canova's sculpture, which has been replicated in countless ways through the years. But just as remarkable for Pauline's private life was her fidelity to the emperor (if not to her husbands). She was witness to Napoleon's great victories in Italy, and she was often with him and her rival for his loyalty, the Empress Josephine, at Malmaison. When he was exiled to Elba, Pauline was the only sibling to follow him there, and after Waterloo she begged to be allowed to join him at Saint Helena. No biographer has gone so deeply into the sources or so closely examined one of the seminal relationships of the man who shaped modern Europe. In Venus of Empire, Flora Fraser casts new light on the Napoleonic era while crafting a dynamic, vivid portrait of mesmerising woman.

Book excerpt: When her two traveling companions cancel their plans to visit India, Sofia Nejinskaya, a Russian American designer in her forties, still makes the trip from her home in Miami. When Sofia meets the handsome Italian Alessandro Salvucci-an opportunistic Italian journalist and successful businessman with a time-tested set of tools for seduction-at the resort's yoga class, he seems in tune with her "perfect match" list for the ideal man. Despite their differing geographical locations, they begin a committed relationship, exchanging numerous e-mails and text messages and visiting one another regularly. But Alessandro's roving Italian eyes, thoughtlessness, and insecurities threaten their love. The relationship is also rocked by their spiritual differences: she is Christian, and he belongs to the Cult of White Brotherhood. Nevertheless, surprised by all the mystical coincidences that show they have much in common, Sofia believes in their love and life together, hoping to overcome Alessandro's spiritual delusions and fallacies about relationships with women. But their marriage is not yet the "happily ever after" ending she imagined. www.amoremiobello.com. "Betta Stone demonstrates in her book Amoremiobello that when it comes to love-and fiction-actions speak louder than beautiful Italian words. Amoremiobello, a password to the e-mail, means "my amazing love," and Stone stays true to Alessandro's character, incorporating Italian into the story and including Italian-to-English translations as footnotes." -Blueink Review "The novel is a suggestion of the karmic wheel on which vital questions of trust and fidelity revolve." -Kirkus Review

Download or read book Masquerade Love Loss and all the Dross written by Gloria Bradley and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2024-05-13 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masquerade – Love, Loss and all the Dross, a follow up to Gloria Bradley’s debut poetry collection Shadowlands – Mind, Mood and Memory is an expression of love and loss, of angst and ecstasy, experienced in the daily dramas that colour our emotional lives; of hopes and dreams submerged beneath a veil of armour, a mask we use to obscure our inner truths, fears and insecurities. Throughout this anthology, hopefully the reader will recognise and connect with the writer’s sentiments and observations. The rhymes interspersed between the more sombre subjects are meant to amuse, as a gentle reminder that we’re simply human in a world of fear and chaos, but one where love survives – dancing in the masquerade.
