Book The Nude Mouse in Oncology Research

Download or read book The Nude Mouse in Oncology Research written by Epie Boven and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nude, athymic mouse (nu/nu) has become generally accepted as a valuable tool to study the biology and therapy of human cancers. This volume presents a critical review of the scientific merits of the animal as a recipient of human tumor tissue transplants. Important information is provided regarding biology, immunology, and measures for genetic and microbiological control of the nude mouse. The discussion of transplantation sites and transplantability of human tumor tissue to the animals includes both the description of host factors and the tumor type involved. The characterization and monitoring of xenografts is followed by a review on their possible application for studies in tumor biology, such as hormones, growth factors, drug resistance, tumor markers, and heterogeneity. Experimental therapy is dedicated to cytostatic agents, hormones, monoclonal antibodies, cytokines, differentiation inducers and radiotherapy. The book also provides critical remarks regarding the limitation of the nude-mouse tumor models. The Nude Mouse in Oncology Research will provide essential reference information for oncology researchers, researchers who work with the nude mouse on a regular basis, and pharmaceutical companies.

Practical applications of the models from drug discovery, genome analysis to personalized treatment are also covered. Written by experts in that field, each of these sections address these critical issues. A brief review of the existing literature addressing the particular topic follows in each section. Presently, there is no single source to provide information on technique and uses of mouse models of human patient tumors. Patient-Derived Mouse Models of Cancer will satisfy this need for cancer researchers, oncologists, pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry scientists as well as molecular biologists studying in vivo systems

Book Immunology Of Nude Mice

Download or read book Immunology Of Nude Mice written by Miroslav Holub and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-03-25 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1989, Immunology of Nude Mice presents a discussion of the nature of this viable laboratory mutant. This new volume updates all immunological information contained in the sparse literature concerning nude mice. It comprehensively explores some of the fre-quent questions associated with nude mice, such as if the mutant is really athymic or if the thymic defect causes all of the other deviations from brain to gonads. The practical consequences of hairlessness of the mutant are also consid-ered. Illustrated with original photographs and tables doc-umenting novel facts in immunology and physiology of nude mice, this publication is valuable for investigators and stu-dents entering the field.

Book Immunological Disorders in Mice

Download or read book Immunological Disorders in Mice written by Blanka Rihova and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1990-11-21 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Immunological Disorders in Mice focuses on immunological reactions and diseases based on models provided through studies on genetically based immunological disorders in inbred strains of mice. The book discusses various defects affecting all levels of immunological response, featuring new data on "classical" mutations, as well as information regarding lesser known immune defects. New areas presented include genetic manipulation, ontogenetic aspects, clinical implications, the effect of drugs on immunodefective strains, and neuroendocrine regulation. A critical evaluation of the data presented through these studies on immune disorders in mice will facilitate the understanding of immunological processes and have significant application in clinical practice. Theoretical immunologists, animal breeding companies, and clinical immunologists will find this text invaluable.

Download or read book Thyroid Autoimmunity written by A. Pinchera and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 579 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1956, three groups independently reported evidence that some thyroid disease appearing spontaneously in humans or experimentally induced in animals are related to autoimmune processes. The interval between these landmark discoveries and the present has witnessed a remarkable and continuing growth of both knowledge and concepts concerning the mechanisms of immune regulation, the pathogenesis of autoimmune thyroid diseases, and their clinical and laboratory manifestations. More importantly knowledge of thyroid autoimmunity has, in many respects, comprised the vanguard of an ever increasing appreciation and understanding of autoimmune diseases in general. On November 24-26 1986, an International Symposium on Thyroid Autoimmunity was held in Pisa. Its purpose was to commemorate the birth of thyroid autoimmunity as a scientific discipline, to summarize current knowledge and concepts in this area, and where possible, to anticipate areas of opportunity for the future - hence the theme of the Symposium, Memories and Perspectives. To open the meeting, the Magnifico Rettore (Chancellor) of the University of Pisa granted special Awards to Dr. Deborah Doniach, Dr. Ivan Roitt, and Dr. Noel R. Rose, who published the first fundamental studies in the field of thyroid autoimmunity, and to Dr. Duncan G. Adams, whose discovery of the long-acting thyroid stimulator (LATS) opened the door to our current understanding of the pathogenesis of Graves' disease. During the meeting thirty plenary lectures were presented.

Book Oxygen Transport to Tissue VII

Download or read book Oxygen Transport to Tissue VII written by F. Kreuzer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 942 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since there are many different tissues and organs in the body, a study of oxygen transport to tissue necessarily involves a great diversity of bodily functions. Furthermore, these tissue functions can be approached from the viewpoint of several disciplines. Even tually, however, all of these approaches must be combined to arrive at a comprehensive picture. This multidisciplinary effort, though imperative, has been implemented slowly because traditional biologi cal science has been largely organ- or discipline oriented. Initia tives to realize an effective international multidisciplinary collab oration have assumed increasing momentum for the past 20 years. These include meetings held in Bad Oeynhausen in 1965 (book in 1968, edited by D. W. Lubbers, U. C. Luft, G. Thews and E. Witzleb), in Nijmegen in 1968 (book in 1969, edited by F. Kreuzer), in Vancouver in 1970 (J. Strauss), and in Dortmund in 1971; this last was in connection with the 25th International Physiological Congress in Munich (book in 1973, edited by M. Kessler, D. F. Bruley, L. C. Clark, Jr. , D. W. Lubbers, I. A. Silver and J. Strauss). This increasing international cooperation called for a more formal organization of these individual initiatives. The credit for taking this decisive step goes to H. I. Bicher and D. F. Bruley from the U. S. A. and D. W. Lubbers and M. Kessler from Germany, who got together in 1972 to plan a large-scale inter national meeting and to organize an international society.

Book Human Tumour Xenografts in Anticancer Drug Development

Download or read book Human Tumour Xenografts in Anticancer Drug Development written by Benjamin Winograd and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting in 1986, the European School of Oncology has expanded its activities in post graduate teaching, which consisted mainly of traditional disease-orientated courses, by promoting new educational initiatives. One of these is the cloister seminars, short meet ings intended for highly qualified oncologists and dealing with specific, controversial aspects of clinical practice and research. Another is the institution of permanent study groups, also called task forces, where a limited number of leading experts are invited to meet once a year with the aim of defining the state of the art and possibly reaching a consensus on developments and treatment in specific fields of oncology. This series of ESO Monographs was designed with the specific purpose of disseminat ing the results of the most interesting of the seminars and study groups, and providing concise and updated reviews of the subjects discussed. It was decided to keep the layout very simple in order to keep costs to a minimum and make the monographs available in the shortest possible time, thus overcoming a com mon problem in medical literature: that of the material being outdated even before publication. Umberto Veronesi Chairman, Scientific Committee European School of Oncology Position Paper on the Application of Human Tumour Xenografts as a Model for Preclinical Phase" Studies in the Evaluation of New Anticancer Compounds Outcome of a seminar on Human Tumour Xenografts organised by the European School of Oncology, Milan, 26th-27th May, 1986.
