Book excerpt: In the city of At il there were two laws strictly enforced: Number one, it was against the law to feed the children and number two, it was against the law to leave the city. Fox, the thirteen-year-old son of the governor, had done both. When he and two friends; eight-year-old Hawk and Wolf, age twelve, were invited to visit a family compound outside the city, Fox deliberated hard and long about the situation. Breaking the law, as a loner, was one thing but when it involved others the decision was much more difficult. It brought back memories of his first time outside the city walls; the broad, unending space of earth and sky he experienced had been a shock to his well-being. It had taken him some time before the freedom of boundaries was a comfortable experience. He was afraid this unknown may be too much of an adjustment for his friends since they had never ventured further than the guard-shack steps at the city entrance. True---he and his friends were only children; numbers on the city records. If they were ever found missing, as `Throwaways' they would just be crossed off the list of city residents.

Book Runaway Kids and Teenage Prostitution

Download or read book Runaway Kids and Teenage Prostitution written by R. Barri Flowers and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2001-06-30 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This concise and accessible new text examines the correlations between runaway children and teenage prostitution in the United States from a criminological, sociological, and psychological perspective. The author takes a systematic approach to defining and describing the differences between youth who run away from home and those who leave institutional settings and distinguishes the difference between runaway and throwaway children. A careful examination of teenage prostitution among girls and boys helps to illuminate the special problems faced by children who have run away. In addition, the author discusses laws related to runaways, teenage prostitution, and the sexual exploitation of minors as well as the criminal justice response to the problems. Runaways and prostitution involving youth in other countries is also explored. The text's findings support current conclusions on the characteristics of runaways, the relationship between runaways and teen prostitution, and the implications of running away from home. Runaway Kids and Teenage Prostitution is divided into five parts. Part I examines the scope and dynamics of running away and differentiates between runaways and throwaways. Part II explores teenage prostitution and provides information on girl and boy prostitutes and the people who exploit them. Child sexual abuse and child pornography as correlates to the problem are studied in Part III, and Part IV reviews the law that atttempts to combat teenage prostitution. Part V is devoted to an examination of the scope and significance of the problem in other countries. Together, these chapters provide readers with a clear picture of the problem of runaways and teenage prostitution in the United States and around the world.

Download or read book Throwaways written by Evan Watkins and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Unlike public education, however, consumer culture deploys the resources of what the author calls technoideological coding, in which survival no longer designates "the fittest" but rather obsolete relics from the past, those left behind by innovations. These relics are throwaways, isolated groups of the population who litter the social landscape and require the moral attention of cleanup crews, the containing apparatus of police and prisons, the financial drain of "safety nets," and the immense bureaucracies of the state. In this coding, narratives of social change are class-as-lifestyle narratives, which locate race and gender as surviving relics of a rapidly disappearing past."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Homelessness in America

Download or read book Homelessness in America written by Robert Hartmann McNamara and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2008-08-30 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Homelessness is one of the most compelling social problems in the United States. Dating from the early years in Colonial America to the current problems relating to homeless women and children, homelessness has been the topic of discussion of scholars, social activists, and policy makers. Many types of social problems are linked to homelessness, including poverty, substance abuse, foster care, and crime. As a result, unpacking the issues has proven to be a challenge for anyone interested in this topic. Homelessness in America offers an assessment of what is known about each segment of the homeless population, which contrary to conventional belief, is comprised of a wide variety of faces from many backgrounds. It explains linkages to other social issues and provides a balanced overview of homelessness in light of the varying perspectives on the topic. While much of what has been written about homelessness has come from the academic perspective, agendas often interfere with an accurate understanding of the problem. Clearly, there is a place for other types of perspectives, including those that view homelessness through political and legal lenses. These groups have provided us with a robust body of information within which we may better understand the questions relating to homelessness. McNamara has brought together the voices of these groups in order to reveal the numerous political, economic, and social constraints that beset current attempts to solve homelessness. In addition, the commonly held belief that homelessness is a result of laziness or a poor work ethic is turned on its head to reveal that homelessness is truly a multifaceted and complex issue.

Book They re Called the Throwaways

Download or read book They re Called the Throwaways written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-11-26 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: School communities identified these children as the “throwaways”-children who often experienced bullying, abuse, foster care, juvenile detention, and special education services. In this book, children with learning differences engage in artmaking as sensemaking to deepen their understanding of what it means to live on the margins in U.S. public K-12 schools. Their artmaking calls upon educators, school leaders, and policymakers to actively engage in addressing the injustices many of the children faced in school. This book is revolutionary. For the first time, children with learning differences, teachers, staff, and school leaders come together and share how they understand the role artmaking as sensemaking plays in empowering disenfranchised populations. Together, they encourage school community members to examine pedagogical practices, eliminate exclusive policies, and promote social justice-oriented work in schools. Their artmaking inspires new ways of knowing and responding to the lived experiences of children with learning differences. They hope their work encourages school communities to make authentic connections to improve their learning, capacity to love others, and of most importantly, to value oneself. Authors’ first-tellings capture the human experience of navigating through oppressive educational systems. Authors urge us to consider what it means to be empathic and to engage in the lives of those we serve. Their truths remind us to that standing still should never be an option.

Book The Throwaway Kids

Download or read book The Throwaway Kids written by Peggy Case Aldhizer and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2012-10-15 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I cannot even now say how many nights I lay in bed and hugged my pillow to me, burying my face in it, and cried and whispered, Mommy, Mommy or Daddy, Daddy, where are you? I would pray that somehow they could hear me. Sometimes even as young as I was, I felt so desperate, so alone, and I knew Mom and Dad would never come for us. I would lie in my bed in the darkness at night and pray so hard, and I felt that not even God heard me anymore. ---------- There were so many different homes we were in, and we were so young. We became little throwaways, little sheep. Sometimes we were able to stay with our father but only for a very short time. Whenever Dad could not pay for our board, he was in jail, or sick, we were moved again and again. Always obliging and quiet, learning quickly that crying and begging and clinging to Dad did not help us. We had our times to laugh as children, who even in the worst of their situations can do, and our time to weep as we did all too often. Thank God we had each other, two little sisters against the world that at times seemed too big and scary and extremely uncertain.
