Book excerpt: Excerpt from Through Wonderland to Alaska The readers of the times, while they will be pleased to hear of the safe return of our esteemed townsman, Rev. Wm. H. Myers, from his trip to Alaska, will no doubt be sorry to miss a continuation of the graphically-written'letters of travel which he has contributed to the columns of this paper for several months past. These letters lhaye called out many com plimentary expressions from among a large circle of admlring readers, and the general consensus of Opinion is that in point of close observation, fine descriptive power, felicity of expression, the apt use of his torical incidents with which the writer ih terwove his interesting narrative, these letters possess a value and literary attract iveness that entitles them to more than the mere passing interest that attaches to a newspaper publication. They should be collected and printed in book-form, as they would adorn any library. - Eu'. Times. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Journey Through Wonderland

Download or read book A Journey Through Wonderland written by Elia Wilkinson Peattie and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Journey Through Wonderland: Or the Pacific Northwest and Alaska, With a Description of the Country Traversed by the Northern Pacific Railroad It was the merest chance that took me westward. 1 had never previously been 500 miles from New York - except, of course, to Europe. Everyone goes to Europe. The chance that made me journey westward was a business one; but other than business reasons made me glad to go. "If you ever get an ache of the heart," said a young Frenchman whom I once met, "take a long journey. Visit the Indian Ocean, for instance. There, wrapped in a pajama, one lies on deck at night, watching the swaying of the masthead and the twinkling of the stars - the languorous stars of those latitudes Time, space, and peace are all there is left of life, and the bitterness and weariness melt away from one, and seem to become a part of the mists in the blue distance. Take my word for it, there is nothing like a voyage 011 some solitary sea to cure the heartache." Thus, when it came about that business took me to Duluth, to Winnipeg, and St. Paul, I concluded to go farther-across the plains, the mountains, and to Alaska. I substituted Alaska for the Indian seas. Alaska, I confess, seemed a very long way off, for I had not, at that time, learned that distance is no actual quantity, but is determined only by the convenience or inconvenience that attends a journey. When I left my native city, however, the words "Duluth" and "Winnipeg" were without significance to me, and even St. Paul meant little enough. The first two days are indistinct in my mind. There arc circumstances under which a man can not enjoy even a Niagara. I could not hear its roar for the cooing of newly-married lovers, and considering n recent experience of mine, I naturally felt irritated. A few long days on the lakes followed, and I got a certain comfort out of them. It is true that I did not lie wrapped in my pajama while fanned by tropical and perfumed breezes. There were no tropical breezes, for one thing, and I had no pajama. As the oxygen got into my lungs, the morbidity went out of my soul, and I should have been almost happy but for a young lumberman on board, lie was a good-natured young man - indeed, he was too good-natured, for lie never looked at me without smiling. Elizabeth, a twenty-four-year-old interior designer living in Brooklyn, New York, encounters a little more than mental static when she sits down for her morning meditation, feeling disconnected from herself and her reality. As she meditates, she forces herself to confront her inner demons head on-including the darker parts that she would rather keep hidden from others, like her boyfriend, Adam. Her inner conflict leads her down a rabbit hole that is far different from the one she remembers from her favorite childhood story. When Elizabeth reaches the bottom of the rabbit hole, she follows a shadowy figure in a familiar blue dress who taunts her and coaxes her deeper into Wonderland. Unable to release herself from her meditation, Elizabeth chases Alice through Wonderland, guided by clues left by Alice, as well as the dark and strangely familiar characters she meets, like the Cheshire Cat, the Tweedle twins, and the Mad Hatter. In Wonderland, Elizabeth comes face to face with her inner light and darkness, and, finally, Alice-and discovers that Alice's secret might be what she has been searching for all along.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Over the Rocky Mountains to Alaska There was no sleep during the closing night not one solitary wink; all laws were dead-letters alas that they should so soon arise again from the dead! - and when the wreath of stars that crowns the golden statue of Our Lady on the high dome, two hundred feet in air, and the wide-sweeping crescent under her shining feet, burst suddenly into flame, and shed a lustre that was welcomed for miles and miles over the plains of Indiana - then, I assure you, we were all so deeply touched that we knew not whether to laugh or to weep, and I shall not tell you which we did. The moon was very full that night, and I didn't blame it! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Indianland and Wonderland Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Indianland and Wonderland What then is the preventive, in great measure, to future difficulty? Travel, interstate and intersectional travel, based on ardent patriotism. Sink first State selfishness, and recognize the fact that what benefits the whole benefits a part. Then let the people of the South travel in the North. Let those of the Pacific Coast go and view the sea coast resorts of the Atlantic, and the nooks and corners of historic New England. The sturdy Northmen of the region of the Great Lakes, the Dakotas, and Montana make acquaintance with the genial clime of Florida, of New Mexico, of California. And above all let the thousands who throng over Europe, spend their ducats in viewing the wonders of the unrivaled Yellowstone Park, gazing upon the snow-crowned head of Mount Tacoma, cruising along the glacial shores of scenic Alaska; while those of the East, leave the valleys and glens of New York and New Eng land, and hie themselves to the life-giving air of the Minnesota Lake Park region, ride over the Montana cattle-plains, or steam o'er the Kootenai Lakes, the gorge-like Lake Chelan, or the lovely Lake Pend d'oreille. In a general way the country tributary to the Northern Pacific Rail road may be segregated into three grand divisions. Flowers peered out every where as they passed; the year was too young for hard work. The third day they passed through Bismarck, North Dakota, a town which has always had enough cranks to turn every freak machine extant. They crossed the muddy Missouri at the little town Of Mandan, named from the curious blue-eyed Indians who once lived about it, a powerful tribe. At Medora they caught Sight of the Marquis de Mores' castle, high perched upon a crag, and of the great packing houses builded with his American wife's rocks. The little town was named after her. At the mansion extravagant hospitality was once dispensed. House parties feasted, danced, hunted, marveling at the surrounding wilder ness and the luxury that had invaded it. But the mar quis has ended his adventurous life in far away Africa, the great buildings are abandoned, like the foolish scheme that demanded them, and serve only to bring to mind a man whose fine riding and personal bravery were his most conspicuous virtues.
