Book Corruption in Infrastructure Delivery

Download or read book Corruption in Infrastructure Delivery written by Glenn Hollands and published by Wedc. This book was released on 2007 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sustainability of the livelihoods of the poor in low- and middle-income countries is compromised by corruption in the delivery of infrastructure services. Such services include water supply, sanitation, drainage, the provision of access roads and paving, transport, solid waste management, street lighting and community buildings. For this reason, The Water, Engineering Development Centre, (WEDC) at Loughborough University in the UK is conducting research into anti-corruption initiatives in this area of infrastructure services delivery. This series of reports has been produced as part of a project entitled Accountability Arrangements to Combat Corruption, which was initially funded by the Department for International Development (DFID) of the British Government. The purpose of the work is to improve governance through the use of accountability arrangements to combat corruption in the delivery of infrastructure services. These findings, reviews, country case studies, case surveys and practical tools provide evidence of how anti-corruption initiatives in infrastructure delivery can contribute to the improvement of the lives of the urban poor. The main objective of the research is the analysis of corruption in infrastructure delivery. This includes a review of accountability initiatives in infrastructure delivery and the nature of the impact of greater accountability.

Book Still An Inconvenient Youth

Download or read book Still An Inconvenient Youth written by Fiona Forde and published by Pan Macmillan South africa. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A provocative look at Julius Malema, South Africa's most controversial politician, as he continues to shake up the political landscape. Julius Malema, South Africa's eminent new socialist, was sworn in as a member of parliament on 21 May 2014, days after his political party – the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) – secured more than one million votes in its first elections and 25 seats in the national assembly. It marked a new chapter in Malema's political career, but it was also a crude awakening for the Cape Town parliament: the portly rebel and his EFF colleagues marched into the chamber wearing bright red workers' overalls and their signature red berets as they promised to take the interests of the poor to the floor of parliament. Love him or loathe him, Malema is undeniably one of the most controversial politicians of modern-day South Africa, if not a radical product of more than 100 years of struggle politics. Following on from the success of the bestselling* An Inconvenient Youth,* this revised edition of Still an Inconvenient Youth: Julius Malema carries on traces Malema's life, from his early, poverty-stricken years in Limpopo to his political awakenings in the ANC, the party he called home until he was ousted in 2012. It charts the early days of the EFF and looks at the young men and women leaders who helped secure the party its first votes in 2014. What does it all mean for South Africa? Does the EFF have the staying power that is needed? Or is it simply a front for the dubious Malema 'brand'? Still an Inconvenient Youth unpacks the rabble-rouser's new socialist revolution.

Book Sometimes There Is a Void

Download or read book Sometimes There Is a Void written by Zakes Mda and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2012-01-03 with total page 692 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Notable Book of the Year South African novelist and playwright Zakes Mda's remarkable life story of growing up in South Africa, Lesotho, and America, told with style and gusto. Zakes Mda is the most acclaimed South African writer of the independence era. His novels tell stories that venture far beyond the conventional narratives of a people's struggle against apartheid. In this memoir, he tells the story of a life that intersects with the political life of his country but that at its heart is the classic adventure story of an artist, lover, father, teacher, and bon vivant. Zanemvula Mda was born in 1948 into a family of lawyers and grew up in Soweto's ambitious educated black class. At age fifteen he crossed the Telle River from South Africa into Basutoland (Lesotho), exiled like his father, a "founding spirit" of the Pan Africanist Congress. Exile was hard, but it was just another chapter in Mda's coming-of-age. He served as an altar boy (and was preyed on by priests), flirted with shebeen girls, feared the racist Boers, read comic books alongside the literature of the PAC, fell for the music of Dvorák and Coltrane, wrote his first stories—and felt the void at the heart of things that makes him an outsider wherever he goes. The Soweto uprisings called him to politics; playwriting brought him back to South Africa, where he became writer in residence at the famed Market Theatre; three marriages led him hither and yon; acclaim brought him to America, where he began writing the novels that are so thick with the life of his country. In all this, Mda struggled to remain his own man, and with Sometimes There Is a Void he shows that independence opened the way for the stories of individual South Africans in all their variety.

The editors have provided a thorough glossary to make these names accessible.

Book Gareth Cliff on Everything

Download or read book Gareth Cliff on Everything written by Gareth Cliff and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Some people think it a very bad thing to have an opinion about anything. Blend in, don't make too much noise, just be happy with what you know and do. I can't do that. Gareth Cliff likes to shoot from the hip. Whether on air or judging a trembling Idols contestant, he's always quick with a point of view. In Gareth Cliff on everything, Gareth throws caution to the wind and writes about all those subjects that make him glad, sad or simply mad. Cows? The perfect steak-making machines. Tarts? Good to have around, even if there's no conversation to be had. Our President? A bargain-bin, most-things-to-most-people, least offensive compromise. Nigella Lawson? She's gotta go before there's an orgasm on set. Ancestor worship? Outdated and primitive. Wine expo? A boring waste of time: can you imagine how devoid of meaning your life has to be before you decide to spend five hours with the most pretentious people on earth. Death? Hey, we've all got to go sometime! BEE? Next subject. Children? No thanks. Only when I have my own. The British Empire? Sorry, it's fallen. The Pope? You better read about it"--Back cover.
