This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of England and the British Empire, Vol. 1 of 4 Many are the histories of England, or of the British Empire and the kingdoms out of whose union that Empire grew, from the earliest times to the present day.' Latterly, almost every such history for which a single author has been responsible is of a compass compatible with its publi cation in a single volume. Whenever, during some forty years past, a work on a larger scale has been projected, the principle of co-operative production by scholars who have each made a special study of a particular era or of a particular aspect of the whole subject has displaced the principle of unity in outlook and method. For anything which exceeds the limits of a study or a summary we have learnt to seek always the guidance of a specialist; and no one can pretend to be a specialist on the whole of British history from Gildas to the latest Blue-book. No one man can be expected to combine in his own person the erudition of the respective staffs of Dr. Hunt, the late H. D. Trail], or Professor Oman, in the histories of England issued under their editorship. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Through the British Empire, Vol. 2 of 2 N 0 one who has visited Parvati will ever forget it. It is a temple crowning an isolated hill. We were ascending the broad steps leading up to it when the elephant we were riding stopped short, shook his. Trunk, and, uttering a hoarse cry, took to pivoting on one of his legs like a circus-horse. I imagined myself an aeronaut astride on the top of his balloon. Two young officers, who were with me, and I began to laugh but the laugh was a bit forced, and remained so until, thanks to the driver's goad, the unruly animal, returning to a sense of duty, deposited us safe and sound in front of the temple. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from British America, Vol. 1 of 2 Every thing convinced me that the British Empire in North America was imperfectly known; and, con sequently, that the just value of that vast territory was not understood. I was also convinced that nearly all the errors committed in treating with foreign powers concerning His Majesty's colonies, as well as all the blunders which have occurred in our colonial policy, have been the results of the meagre inform ation possessed by our government, and not, accord ing to a prevalent opinion, the effect of intentional neglect on the part of His Majesty's ministers. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the British Empire in the Nineteenth Century, Vol. 1 The period dealt with in this volume is probably the most important in the history of Modern England, so no apology is needed for commencing a History of the Nineteenth Century at the year I 793. Indeed, it would be impossible either to describe the condition of the country in 1801, or to continue the narrative of the war with France, without some account of the events which occurred during the last few years of the eighteenth century. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Illustrated History of the British Empire in India and the East, From the Earliest Times to the Suppression of the Sepoy Mutiny in 1859, Vol. 1 of 2 The Introduction to this Work is so written as to render a long preface neither necessary nor desirable. Probably, a History of the British Empire in India and the East is one of the most laborious works Which couldbe undertaken, however popular the form Which may be given to it. This circumstance, so well known, furnishes the Author With a plea for the indulgence of his readers, Whose support has been so extensively given to his productions. Download or read book The History of the Church of England Vol 1 written by James S. M. Anderson and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Church of England, Vol. 1: In the Colonies and Foreign Dependencies of the British Empire It is the object of this work to trace the history of the Church of England in the Colonies and Foreign Dependencies of the British Empire, from the earliest period in which the attempt was made to acquire any of them, to the present day. The first Volume has only brought the enquiry to the beginning of the reign of Charles the First; and, as this embraces but a small portion of the period which it is proposed to traverse, the reader may probably be alarmed at the almost interminable length of the course which here seems to be opened before him. It is necessary, therefore, to state, that much preliminary matter required to be noticed in this Volume, the examination of which, I trust, will tend greatly to facilitate my future progress. In the first place, the condition of our Transatlantic Colonies in early times, and the trials which the Church in those Colonies had consequently to encounter, reflected, for the most part. Book The Foundation and Growth of the British Empire Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Foundation and Growth of the British Empire Classic Reprint written by James A. Williamson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-14 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Foundation and Growth of the British Empire It is in my opinion a mistake in such a text-book to deal extensively in generalisations and the discussion of abstract principles. What is necessary to leave a permanent im pression on the mind of a possibly indifferent student is an abundance of vivid detail carefully selected so as to concentrate attention on the salient features of the story. In this respect it is important to discriminate between the requirements of the advanced and the elementary student. Seeley's Growth of British Policy, for example, is fasci nating reading for one who already has the facts at his fingers' ends, but it would be of little interest to the average boy at school. If, therefore, one can succeed in so handling the subject that it will be studied from interest rather than compulsion, it will be safe to leave in great measure to the teacher the task of deducing general principles and correlating the facts. A good teacher, indeed, will stimulate his pupils to do this for themselves. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the British Empire in India, Vol. 1 of 2: From the Appointment of Lord Hardinge to the Political Extinction of the East-India Company; 1844 to 1862; Forming a Sequel to Thornton's History of India In the following pages I have striven to put together a true, concise, I would fain hope a readable narrative of events in British India during the last years of the old Company's rule. The first volume brings the history down from the appointment of Lord Hardinge to the retirement of the Marquis of Dalhousie. The second, now not far from completion, will carry the reader onwards through the eventful reign of Lord Canning to the final enthronement of a parliamentary Council, in the place of that great Company in whose name, under the shadow of whose authority, our Indian Empire had grown and grown with gourdlike swiftness, from a little island on the west coast to a dominion wellnigh co-extensive with the whole broad peninsula.
