In just three months, we would celebrate another anniversary, or would God change our plans? Did I have the strength to face what may come next? My ability to cope was hanging on each letter that formed my words. I wondered if this time, life may prove to turn in a direction I was unaware of. There wasn't one thing I could do to change the fog I was about to walk through.

Book How to Carry What Can t Be Fixed

Download or read book How to Carry What Can t Be Fixed written by Megan Devine and published by Sounds True. This book was released on 2021-08-10 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An illustrated journal for meeting grief with honesty and kindness—honoring loss, rather than packing it away With her breakout book It’s OK That You’re Not OK, Megan Devine struck a chord with thousands of readers through her honest, validating approach to grief. In her same direct, no-platitudes style, she now offers How to Carry What Can’t Be Fixed—a journal filled with unique, creative ways to open a dialogue with grief itself. “Being allowed to tell the truth about your grief is an incredibly powerful act,” she says. “This journal enables you to tell your whole story, without the need to tack on a happy ending where there isn’t one.” Grief is a natural response to death and loss—it’s not an illness to be cured or a problem to be fixed. This workbook contains no clichés, timetables, or checklists of stages to get through; it won’t help you “move past” or put your loss behind you. Instead, you’ll find encouragement, self-care exercises, and daily tools, including: •Writing prompts to help you honor your pain and heartbreak • On-the-spot practices for tough situations—like grocery store trips, the sleepless nights, and being the “awkward guest” • The art of healthy distraction and self-care • What you can do when you worry that “moving on” means “letting go of love” • Practical advice for fielding the dreaded “How are you doing?” question • What it means to find meaning in your loss • How to hold joy and grief at the same time • Tear-and-share resources to help you educate friends and allies • The “Griever’s Bill of Rights,” and much more Your grief, like your love, belongs to you. No one has the right to dictate, judge, or dismiss what is yours to live. How to Carry What Can’t Be Fixed is a journal and everyday companion to help you enter a conversation with your grief, find your own truth, and live into the life you didn’t ask for—but is here nonetheless.

Winner of the Best Book Award (Health: Death & Dying) by American Book Fest In Before and After Loss, neurologist Dr. Lisa M. Shulman describes a personal story of loss and her journey to understand the science behind the mind-altering experience of grief. Part memoir, part creative nonfiction, part account of scientific discovery, this moving book combines Shulman's perspectives as an expert in brain science and a keen observer of behavior with her experience as a clinician, a caregiver, and a widow. Drawing on the latest studies about grief and its effects, she explains what scientists know about how the mind, brain, and body respond and heal following traumatic loss. She also traces the interface between the experience of profound loss and the search for emotional restoration. Combining the science of emotional trauma with concrete psychological techniques— including dream interpretation, journaling, mindfulness exercises, and meditation—Shulman's frank and empathetic account will help readers regain their emotional balance by navigating the passage from profound sorrow to healing and growth.

Book Reflecting on the Inevitable

Download or read book Reflecting on the Inevitable written by Peter J. Adams and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-03-09 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Death studies have, over the last twenty years, witnessed a flourishing of research and scholarship particularly in areas such as dying and bereavement, cultural practices and fear of dying. But, despite its importance, a specific focus on the nature of personal mortality has attracted surprisingly little attention. Reflecting on the Inevitable combines evidence from several disciplinary fields to explore the varying ways each of us engages with the prospect of personal mortality. Chapters are organized around the question of how an ongoing relationship might be possible when the threat of consciousness coming to an end points to an unspeakable nothingness. The book then argues that, despite this threat, an ongoing relationship with one's own death is still possible by means of conceptual devices, or 'enabling frames', that help shape personal mortality into a relatable object. In each chapter the subtleties and applicability of key ideas are enhanced through a series of illustrative narratives built up around the lives of four people at different ages living in two adjacent houses. Reflecting on the Inevitable is relevant not only to academics of death studies, but also those training and practicing in people-helping professions, as well as anyone experiencing or attempting to make sense of major life events.

Reeling from an unrelenting barrage of questions, accusations and threats, the film-maker struggles to respond to the dilemma which is faced by all artists in totalitarian states: how to reconcile ones freedom of imagination and creativity with the conformity to the artistically-stifling orthodoxy which is demanded by the rulers of society? His response is an example of the ingenuity which is often displayed by artists in repressive societies.

Book excerpt: There are an estimated 258 million widows worldwide. Demystifying Grief is a primer for women who’ve lost their partners, an accessible handbook on the physical, emotional, and behavioral effects of grief, and how to survive and heal. In June 2018, Diane Kirby’s life partner of forty-six years died suddenly and unexpectedly. In the aftermath, she discovered that the death of one’s partner is a traumatic, painful, and incredibly solitary experience, particularly in a death-denying society. Divided in two parts, this book deals first with survival, for when grief is fresh, all one can do is simply exist; this section covers the most common reactions to grief, such as grief fog, triggers, and touchstones. The second part deals with healing, for there comes a time when grievers want to do more than just survive; this section covers topics such as grief work, rituals, and growth. Applying social science and personal experience, this author has written a smart, concise, and compassionate guide, delving into the deeply necessary what, why, and how of grief.

Book Donora Death Fog

  • Author : Andy McPhee
  • Publisher : University of Pittsburgh Press
  • Release : 2023-03-28
  • ISBN : 0822988569
  • Pages : 258 pages

Download or read book Donora Death Fog written by Andy McPhee and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2023-03-28 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a foreword by Jennifer Richmond-Bryant In October 1948, a seemingly average fog descended on the tiny mill town of Donora, Pennsylvania. With a population of fewer than fifteen thousand, the town’s main industry was steel and zinc mills—mills that continually emitted pollutants into the air. The six-day smog event left twenty-one people dead and thousands sick. Even after the fog lifted, hundreds more died or were left with lingering health problems. Donora Death Fog details how six fateful days in Donora led to the nation’s first clean air act in 1955, and how such catastrophes can lead to successful policy change. Andy McPhee tells the very human story behind this ecological disaster: how wealthy industrialists built the mills to supply an ever-growing America; how the town’s residents—millworkers and their families—willfully ignored the danger of the mills’ emissions; and how the gradual closing of the mills over the years following the tragedy took its toll on the town.
