Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book that attempts to show an atheist's perspective on religions and social issues. Since believers rarely paint atheists in a favorable light, it is hoped the reader will gain insights into modern atheism, and make up their own minds. Just as it would be foolish to only take an atheist's view on religious matters, it would be equally unfair to only listen to the believer's presentation of atheism. Being able to hear both sides of an issue is essential for reasonable understanding. In this book I address a wide variety of topics and scenarios, and present my views on them, and in particular offer critiques on religious belief. It seems to me, many of the issues threatening our freedoms and quality of life derive from very poor critical thinking skills, unquestioning acceptance of religious beliefs and sacred cows, religious or not. Some essays are personal, most are not; all hope the reader will be open minded and willing to think critically. While not an academic textbook, if the reader is really interested in learning about atheism, and on why atheists think religions are deeply flawed and dangerous, or if they would like to test their beliefs against the yardsticks I offer, then I think they will find the material interesting, and hopefully, thought provoking.

Was Nazareth inhabited when Mary and Joseph are supposed to have lived there? Why do Catholic Bibles have more and longer books in them than Protestant ones? Gathered together in this first volume of Zindler's collected short works readers will find 49 articles, speeches, and lectures written over the space of forty years to answer those questions and to challenge and respond to claims of religious apologists and defenders of the Jewish, Christian, Mormon, and Muslim scriptures-including a reprint and critique of the Danish cartoons that triggered rioting and murder throughout the Muslim world. A copious index will make it easy for readers to find their way back to particular materials when they need 'ammunition' to defend themselves from missionaries and other religious aggressors. This book was released on 2011-03 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is atheism, and what are its logical and philosophical foundations? How does it relate to humanism? Is religiosity a mental disorder, and why is it so hard to cure? Is there such a thing as free will? Do atheists have funerals? Was "The Amityville Horror" a true story? Who was Madalyn Murray O'Hair? Are we being inundated with a flood of religious disinformation? In addition to the answers of these questions, readers of this fourth volume of a five-volume series will find a lot of humor as well, including the Fun-With-Dial-an-Atheist pieces, recalled from the brink of oblivion for one last performance. Also in this volume are the words and music scores to the outrageous Dial-an-Atheist songs "Rutabaga Baby" and "Theophagy Tango." To balance all that levity, the book ends with "Poems I Have Spared," a swan song of sorts to prepare readers for the autobiographical "Volume V: Atheist at Large." A helpful index is included.

Download or read book In Good Faith written by Scott A. Shay and published by Post Hill Press. This book was released on 2018-09-04 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prominent atheists claim the Bible is a racist text. Yet Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. read it daily. Then again, so did many ardent segregationists. Some atheists claim religion serves to oppress the masses. Yet the classic text of the French Revolution, What is the Third Estate?, was written by a priest. On the other hand, the revolutionaries ended up banning religion. What do we make of religion’s confusing role in history? And what of religion’s relationship to science? Some scientists claim that we have no free will. Others argue that advances in neurobiology and physics disprove determinism. As for whispering to the universe, an absurd habit say the skeptics. Yet prayer is a transformative practice for millions. This book explores the most common atheist critiques of the Bible and religion, incorporating Jewish, Christian, and Muslim voices. The result is a fresh, modern re-evaluation of religion and of atheism. Scott A. Shay is a Co-Founder and Chairman of Signature Bank and a longstanding Jewish community activist. Shay started a Hebrew school, an adult educational program, and chaired several Jewish educational programs. He is the author of Getting our Groove Back: How to Energize American Jewry and has been thinking about religion, reason, and modernity since wondering why his parents sent him to Hebrew school.

Book Jesus Through Pagan Eyes

Download or read book Jesus Through Pagan Eyes written by Mark Townsend and published by Llewellyn Worldwide. This book was released on 2012-06-08 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Pagans and Christians alike, Jesus Through Pagan Eyes offers a provocative portrait ofJesus—as a compassionate, life-affirming, nature-inspired spiritual teacher, freed from the limiting ideology of the Church. Rev. Mark Townsend sets the stage by exploring the historical evidence of who Jesus was as a human being before delving into the realm of metaphor and mythology, the notion of Christ, and the Church's conception of Jesus as Christ. The heart of this unique book lies in the thoughtful and deeply moving collection of stories, essays, and interviews about Jesus from today's most respected Pagan, Wiccan, and Druidic leaders. Contributors such as Maxine Sanders, Christopher Penczak, Janet Farrar, Diana Paxson, Philip Carr-Gomm, Oberon Zell-Ravenheart, John Michael Greer, Selena Fox, and Raven Grimassi explore the historical figure of Jesus in relation to Witchcraft, the tarot, goddess worship, and shamanism—while illustrating how this god of the Christian church blesses and inspires those who embrace non-traditional spiritual paths. Whether you envision Jesus as an ascended master, a human teacher, or a mythic god-man, this remarkable book will introduce you to a Jesus who fits fully into the Pagan imagination. Praise: "Townsend uses Jesus to initiate dialogue, and he does so in way that is accepting and inclusive of many understandings and interpretations of Jesus, his purpose, and his relevance (or irrelevance) in the religious practices of contemporary Pagans."—Huffington Post "This work admirably promotes understanding between belief systems that have a sometimes uneasy relationship."—Publishers Weekly

Book excerpt: Why are atheists so angry? Do all atheists really just want to lead reckless lives and live in depravity and sin? Also, do atheists support things like abortion and gay rights because they have no moral compass to speak of? Find out the answer to these questions and many more like them in this book! Atheism is the world's third largest religious oriented belief after Christianity and Islam respectively, yet so many people seem to have deeply rooted misapprehensions about what atheism is and what it is atheists believe. This book will clear up any confusion there might be about atheism and help people come to a sympathetic appreciation of the atheistic worldview, even if in the end they simply decide to agree to disagree. In this book, Tristan Vick - once a Christian and now a skeptic - shares with us selections from his popular writing as an outspoken atheist. Tackling hot-topic and controversial subjects ranging from feminism, to gay rights, marriage equality, abortion, corporal punishment, the freedom of speech, and to what it is atheists actually believe, Tristan Vick shares with us how he views a wide range of subject matter through the eyes of his atheism. Although Tristan Vick doesn't speak for all atheists, this is an excellent book to learn how and why one particular atheist sees and thinks about the world the way he does and why atheism, after giving it further consideration, isn't as problematic as so many seem to think.

Every literary source ever advanced by serious scholars as being a reference to the historical Jesus is examined and found to be nothing of the sort, except for the latest layers of the Babylonian Talmud. Clearly, those references were reactions to Christianity, not to Christ. The Jesus the Jews never knew provides a fascinating look into the world in which the gospels were invented. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religious people have been known to push their beliefs onto others; in fact several religions require it. This book utilizes reason, logic, some psychology, and the experiences of someone who has been in several hundred religious debates with believers, mainly those of the Judeo-Christian faiths. Throughout this book, you will be presented with several of the most common arguments that believers utilize in order to attempt to convert people to followers; then you will be given a response that not only stops them in their religion-pushing tracks, but will give you the upper hand, and hopefully, give them something to think about, aside from simply what their preacher/pastor/reverend, etc., has told them to think. This book will allow you to defend yourself from others’ religious preachings, as well as teach you something about atheism and how informed you can be as a nonbeliever. It pushes the limits of religious discussion with examples from the Bible, logical arguments, psychological reasoning, and well-researched opinions. Do not get caught off guard again by any believer . . . Be ready and more informed.

Book The Atheist s Guide to Reality Enjoying Life without Illusions

Download or read book The Atheist s Guide to Reality Enjoying Life without Illusions written by Alex Rosenberg and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2011-10-03 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A book for nonbelievers who embrace the reality-driven life. We can't avoid the persistent questions about the meaning of life-and the nature of reality. Philosopher Alex Rosenberg maintains that science is the only thing that can really answer them—all of them. His bracing and ultimately upbeat book takes physics seriously as the complete description of reality and accepts all its consequences. He shows how physics makes Darwinian natural selection the only way life can emerge, and how that deprives nature of purpose, and human action of meaning, while it exposes conscious illusions such as free will and the self. The science that makes us nonbelievers provides the insight into the real difference between right and wrong, the nature of the mind, even the direction of human history. The Atheist's Guide to Reality draws powerful implications for the ethical and political issues that roil contemporary life. The result is nice nihilism, a surprisingly sanguine perspective atheists can happily embrace.
