Book Politics and Power in the Maghreb

Download or read book Politics and Power in the Maghreb written by Michael Willis and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2014-06 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overthrow of the regime of President Ben Ali in Tunisia on 14 January 2011 took the world by surprise. The popular revolt in this small Arab country and the effect it had on the wider Arab world prompted questions as to why there had been so little awareness of it up until that point. It also revealed a more general lack of knowledge about the surrounding western part of the Arab world, or the Maghreb, which had long attracted a tiny fraction of the outside interest shown in the eastern Arab world of Egypt, the Levant and the Gulf. This book examines the politics of the three states of the central Maghreb--Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco--since their achievement of independence from European colonial rule in the 1950s and 1960s. It explains the political dynamics of the region by looking at the roles played by the military, political parties and Islamist movements and addresses factors such as Berber identity and economics, as well as how the states of the region interact with each other and with the wider world. -- Provided by publisher.

Book Cook s Practical Guide to Algiers Algeria and Tunisia

Download or read book Cook s Practical Guide to Algiers Algeria and Tunisia written by Thomas Cook Ltd and published by Theclassics.Us. This book was released on 2013-09 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1904 edition. Excerpt: ...Crossing the lake by an island, the route lies through a barren country to El Biod, a fortified post well supplied with water, commanding the passage of the Chott-er-Rarbi, and rising gradually the railway attains the height of 1,140 metres at Mecheria, an abandoned village, now a military post of extent and importance, with a number of native dwellings, situated at the foot of the Djebel Antar. Leaving Mecheria the country becomes more barren and rocky, with scarcely coarse grass enough to feed the large flocks of sheep scattered over the yellow desert. In this way, with nothing but the stations of Naama and Mekalis and the mountains of Morocco in the distance, the road continues for 100 kilometres to Ai'n Sefra, the largest military station in this part of Algeria, with barrack accommodation for 5,000 soldiers. But Ai'n Sefra is more than this, it is the first ksar, or native village, one can visit in the date country of the Sahara. The inhabitants belong to the tribe of the Amour, each village of which has its own administration. The houses are of bricks dried in the sun, with one living room, and one small sleeping room for everybody and everything, such as donkeys, goats, fowls, children. The men do nothing but smoke or eat, the women make hai'cks and burnous for sale to the tribes. The village is built on the side of a hill, beneath which flows the Oued Sefra (Saffron River). The houses have smart gardens planted with fig and pomegranate trees, and beyond are the date trees. Hotels.--Hotel de France, Hotel des Voyageurs, and at the station are a few beds, which can be occupied by the permission of the Franco-Algerian Company. Excursions can be made to the oases of Tiout and Moghrar, but more conveniently by rail, see below....

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Algiers is such a city of contrasts, of dark memories and present prosperity, of Christian slavery and Christian rule, brilliant sun and tropical rain, of wide modern streets and networks of narrow alleys, with the slow dignity of movement of the old race and the rapid vivacity of their new rulers, that it makes all the difference in the world in what spirit and at what moment you arrive. At times the city is all sunshine, “a diamond in an emerald frame,” as the Arabs call it; at others only a dim outline is visible blotted out by the tropical rain. When first we saw Algiers, after a dreamy, peaceful voyage from Gibraltar, the city was in its most brilliant mood. Having started in glorious spring weather, we watched the Sierra Nevada actually fulfilling all childish dreams of snow mountains, seemingly suspended in the soft cloudy distance with a suggestion of a double horizon, which some people called a mirage. Blue sky, bluer sea, still and calm,—nothing discordant but the notes of the bugle-calls to meals. By nightfall the mountains had faded away, and all we saw was a long line of blue African coast, mysterious and dim. But in the morning there was excitement and bustle enough, the bugles beginning at dawn—a lovely dawn and sunrise. Then the joy of coming into harbour and seeing the white terraces of the town gleaming in the sunshine. General impression all charm, brightness, and colour. The next time we felt the full force of contrast. Grey drizzling weather at Marseilles, a rolling sea, cold winds and general depression as the keynote of the voyage, to be followed by a late landing on a winter evening, the bright green of the hills dim with rain, the houses looking as grey and chill as ourselves standing forlornly under umbrellas on dripping decks, and almost wet through in the short run from the steamer to a carriage; for a downpour in Algiers is a downpour, just as sunshine is really sunshine, and not the faint flickering of light and shade we sometimes mistake for it at home. So that we could fully sympathise with our fellow-travellers’ distress, whilst remembering the loveliness we knew might return at any moment. In any case landing is rather a disappointment, because the first impression is so entirely French, with scarcely a touch of the East. The harbour, quay, and houses behind are all modern, and might belong to any city of southern France; the only difference at first is the sight of the boys, with their smiling faces and queer clothes, who fight for the privilege of carrying the luggage—such nondescript clothes, half European, half Eastern. Old coats, old boots, the coats generally too small, the boots too large, worn with a variety of Eastern garments and nearly always with a scarlet Manchester handkerchief wound round their heads.
