Book Misfits Hybrids Architectural Artifacts for the 21st Century City

Download or read book Misfits Hybrids Architectural Artifacts for the 21st Century City written by Ferda Kolatan and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-06-10 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary cities are shaped by the unlikely adjacencies of objects that are vastly different in kind, origin, and scale: buildings, infrastructure, and other urban components that over time accumulate into mismatched configurations. However, despite the ubiquity of these oddities and their impact on the city, we rarely give them much consideration. In Misfits & Hybrids, Ferda Kolatan explores the untapped potential in these unexpected conditions for a new kind of architecture. A diverse array of projects, developed in Kolatan’s design studios at the University of Pennsylvania Weitzman School of Design, illustrates how hybrid artifacts can reveal the often overlooked cultural, socio-political, and material histories of a site, fostering design tactics invested in reinventing the existing. Set within the cosmopolitan megacities of Istanbul, Cairo, and New York, the projects are conceived as real fictions, conjuring novel narrative, aesthetic, and representational forms to reflect the pluralistic postindustrial city.

Book How We Got to Black Lives Matter

Download or read book How We Got to Black Lives Matter written by William Napier and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2020-07-28 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revisionist history, vote buying politics, bad social policy, and the misguided actions of leftist miscreants and institutions have over time coalesced within the United States to form a unifying con in which blacks in particular, and more recently Hispanics and whites as well, are now used as pawns by the political class to further its own nefarious pursuits. Learn how slavery, and the supposed vestiges thereof, is used by leftists worldwide in a continuous assault on the United States—a smear campaign that is as hollow as it is destructive. How We Got to Black Lives Matter covers the early history of slavery around the world—from the early colonial period, the founding of the U.S., the antebellum period, and the critical events that led to the Civil War. The chains of slavery were finally broken with the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, but the benefits from this groundbreaking legislation never seemed to materialize. Some of the later programs designed to improve the lives of the poor have instead helped lead to the creation of inner-city hell holes in many of America's large urban centers. Over the years, certain anti-poverty laws have had an opposite effect, with the destruction of the black family and the emergence of inter-generational welfare dependency, runaway crime, and other maladies. Using the cudgel of racism and discrimination to repel any constructive ideas for reform has promoted the continuance of the dependent classes to ensure political favor at the voting booth. This book will reveal how we got here—along with some ways to get out.

Book Magick and Misfits Books 1 4

Download or read book Magick and Misfits Books 1 4 written by Ann Gimpel and published by Ann Gimpel. This book was released on 2021-03-25 with total page 805 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban fantasy and slow burn romance wrapped into a serial that will keep you up reading long into the night. Over a thousand pages of pure delight. Strange bedfellows rock worlds. Court of Rogues Reluctant recruit to the nines, I became Faery’s regent by default. Sure, I was next in line for the throne, but I never believed Oberon and Titania were gone for good until first a decade rolled by, and then two, and then ten. They’ll never be back, and the land is mourning. Or pissed. It’s hard to tell which, and I’m not sure what difference it makes. I split my time between Faery and Earth searching for a way to mend the rift that’s killing my realm. I haven’t made much progress. Time is running through the glass, mocking my paltry efforts. A sultry Witch is barely a blip on the radar. So what if she counts cards in the casino I run on Earth and makes my pit boss a little nuts? Out of the blue, she spits out the unbelievable, and I discover she’s not a Witch after all. A glamour hid her Fae-Sidhe blood so well, she’d fooled me. Her mixed blood is an affront. By rights, I should haul her before the Court to face justice. She understood the chance she took revealing herself to me, and her offer to join forces is tempting, but it could cost me my throne. Some risks are worth the price. If I cross the line, there’ll be no going back. Midnight Court My days as Faery’s reluctant regent have crashed and burned. Either I left the land to rot in a squalid soup of broken promises, or I destroyed her enemies one by one. No choice there. Not really. I’d known some of those “enemies” since childhood, which was centuries ago. They say familiarity breeds contempt. In my case it bred sorrow as I consigned Fae who’d been friends to eternal destruction and fed them to the land. Dariyah, the Witch-who-wasn’t-one, crossed my path for reasons I’m still figuring out. Her long-lost mother presided over one of Faery’s many dirty secrets, the Midnight Court. Some like to believe Fae blood is pure. It’s not. We and the Sidhe are joined at the hip, and the Midnight Court was once a living symbol of our bond. Court of the Fallen Faery has changed so much I barely recognize her. The worst part is I didn’t see this coming. A few minor skirmishes, sure, but the Unseelie fielded tens of thousands against us. The King of Winter is finally exacting revenge against the consort who spurned him. The rest of us are collateral damage. He played his hand well, attracted powerful allies, and punted us into a definite one-down position. For the moment. Pegasus is the king’s primary ally. I possess knowledge that will blow their partnership sky high. And proof in case neither of them believes me. Timing is everything, though. We must wrest Faery from the enemy. I finally hold the land link, but success is far from a foregone conclusion. More blood will flow before we’re done. Buckets of the stuff, but I can’t let that stop me. Court of Destiny Faery’s castle lies in ruins, a reflection of the rest of a land I love. My land, my realm, has altered almost beyond recognition. The part that hasn’t changed is the incredible people and creatures who live in Faery. Unicorns. Fauns. Satyrs. Fae. Sidhe. Their spirits have been indomitable, and it makes me proud to call them brothers. But then, the Unseelie used to be brethren too. Now they stand against us along with a collection of monsters intent on sucking every last breath of life from Faery. The worst part about all of this has been not knowing whom I can call friend. As we lurch into the endgame, my life, soul, and fortunes are linked with the woman I love. We rise—or fall—together. If it comes down to a gut-wrenching choice, will I pick Faery or Dariyah?

Book American Literary Misfits

Download or read book American Literary Misfits written by D. Berton Emerson and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2024-04-02 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of nineteenth-century American literature has long been tied up with the study of American democracy. Just as some regions in the United States are elevated to stand in for the whole nation—New England is a good example—D. Berton Emerson argues the same is true for American literature of the nineteenth century; a few canonical texts overrepresent the more motley history of American letters. Emerson examines an eclectic group of literary texts that have rarely, if ever, been considered representative of "the nation" because of their unseemly characters or plots, divergence from dominant literary trends of the era, or local particularity. These are his "literary misfits," authors and texts that show different forms of egalitarianism in action that existed outside and even against the dominant liberal narratives of American democracy. Emerson's unique contribution is revealing these texts and the people they represent as rich with political knowledge. This knowledge, he argues, finds its most potent expression in the local. Such texts show us a different kind of democratic politics: one that is egalitarian, disorderly, and radical rather than homogeneous.

Book Misfits Supermen

Download or read book Misfits Supermen written by Steve Starger and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2018-11-30 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bond of brotherhood is hard to break, but a lifetime of dealing with familial expectation, bitterness, and psychological disorders can bend and warp it into something nearly unrecognizable. This story tells the tale of two brothers: Melvyn, the elder, whose amalgamation of disorders leave him completely unable to function within society; and Stephen, the younger, whose own emotional and psychological issues are overshadowed to the point where he becomes little more than a pale and twisted reflection of his brother. On different ends of the same spectrum, Melvyn is blissfully unaware of their troubling connection (or so his brother can only assume), but for Stephen, it is undeniable. He lives with it every day, sensing his own otherness in every twitch, outburst, and inability of his brother to overcome his inner demons. Left largely on his own to deal with his peculiarities—while carrying the burden of being “the normal one,” of whom much is expected— Stephen begins a complicated and unpredictable journey, one which will take him as far from his brother as he can manage to get, even as it brings them inexorably closer. A portion of proceeds from this book will go toward the Camp Cuheca Scholarship — Melvyn D. Starger fund at Waterford Country School, Quaker Hill, CT., to help fund a two-week summer residency at the camp. Download or read book The Six Misfits Trilogy written by Dylan Lewis and published by AB Discovery. This book was released on 2020-08-09 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dylan Lewis' brilliant series captures the story of six teenagers, each of them carrying personal differences and anguish that causes them to be 'misfits' in the eyes of others. They find each other on a trip to the Australian Outback and share adventure, danger and cameraderie. In each of the three books, they learn more about themselves and each other and the discovery of their own worth and unique value. The six 'misfits' enjoy great adventure, danger, risk and ultimate success as they battle their own fears and the forces of ignorance and stupidity that we all face at times. If Enid Blyton had been LGBT aware and embraced danger as much as adventure, she would have written this series.

Yet Duncan is not without friends and immediately lines up forces to counter Pavia’s quest to marginalize him. Though the Twelve do not take sides in the internal affairs of the kingdom, Duncan can count on the support of Brenna and Alexis, as well as Slaven and the Templars. Unfortunately, while everyone’s attention is diverted to the machinations of regnal power, Rugia finally makes good on its threat and is preparing to launch an attack through the forbidden forest.

  • ISBN : 1684481449

Download or read book Faust written by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2019-07-19 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Goethe is the most famous German author, and the poetic drama Faust, Part I (1808) is his best-known work, one that stands in the company of other leading canonical works of European literature such as Dante’s Inferno and Shakespeare’s Hamlet. This is the first new translation into English since David Constantine’s 2005 version. Why another translation when there are several currently in print? To invoke Goethe’s own authority when speaking of his favorite author, Shakespeare, Goethe asserts that so much has already been said about the poet-dramatist “that it would seem there’s nothing left to say,” but adds, “yet it is the peculiar attribute of the spirit that it constantly motivates the spirit.” Goethe’s great dramatic poem continues to speak to us in new ways as we and our world continually change, and thus a new or updated translation is always necessary to bring to light Faust’s almost inexhaustible, mysterious, and enchanting poetic and cultural power. Eugene Stelzig’s new translation renders the text of the play in clear and crisp English for a contemporary undergraduate audience while at the same time maintaining its leading poetic features, including the use of rhyme. Published by Bucknell University Press. Distributed worldwide by Rutgers University Press.
