Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thrift Clothing A contribution can be made by every girl and woman who knows how to sew if they will make the effort to conserve the supply of textiles and other clothing materials by seeing the possibilities in the outgrown or partly worn garments now hanging in closets or stored away. The following suggestions about made-over garments are given with the idea of thrift and economy in view, whereby the supply of new clothing material may be released for the service of those who necessarily must have strong, warm and new material. Sewing classes in schools now have the chance, while the enthusiasm for thrift is in the air, to learn to cut by pattern with the added interest of shaping the result into a new article from that which otherwise would be discarded. Cleansing, repairing, remodel ling may have the interest of becoming almost a game, the goal of which is to attain new garments from old ones by plotting, planning, twisting and turning until the old yields the new in form and purpose. Hats, cloaks, dresses, men's coats, trousers, overcoats, knit underwear, with accessories such as tape, linings, buttons, hooks and eyes, ribbons, pieces of silk, velvet, cotton goods, buckles, may all contri bute to new shapes and designs under the manipula tion of fingers in training, directed by the ingenuity of teachers who are stimulated to their best efforts by the present emergency. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Clothing: Choice, Care, Cost Waste is one of the main causes of high prices. It has become a habit with large numbers of people, but must be checked or prices may go still higher. This can only be accomplished by each individual consumer and family buyer locking her pocketbook and only opening it when an article is absolutely necessary for health and comfort in living, is a worthy article, and is not too high in price for its intrinsic value. To do this wisely will require the education of many of our citizens in the entire field of expenditure, including the Wise selection of textiles and clothing. Book You and Your Laundry Classic Reprint

Download or read book You and Your Laundry Classic Reprint written by Mrs. Christine Frederick and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-06 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from You and Your Laundry All of these early and traditional methods were based on the idea of friction, either by rubbing the pieces on a board or pounding them with some form of paddle. This rub-a-dub-dub method persisted for centuries, not because it was the best way to remove soil from clothing, but because no one, until recent times, studied to find some new and more efficient washing principles. Just as for thousands of years people cooked their food by hold ing it on a stick over a bed of hot coals, because more advanced methods of using an iron range or an electric grill had not been dis covered, so too, women everywhere have followed the old drudgery washboard-friction habit of washing because the wonderful, labor saving methods of machine washing were not yet perfected. Book Thrift Store Saints

  • Author : Jane Knuth
  • Publisher : Loyola Press

  • ISBN : 0829433155
  • Pages : 137 pages

Download or read book Thrift Store Saints written by Jane Knuth and published by Loyola Press. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First place winner for "Popular Presentation of the Catholic Faith" from the Catholic Press Association! Thrift Store Saints is a collection of true stories based on Jane Knuth’s experiences serving the poor at a St. Vincent de Paul thrift store in the inner city of Kalamazoo, Michigan. At the outset of the book, Knuth is a reluctant new volunteer at the store, sharing that her middle-class, suburban, church-going background has not prepared her well for this kind of work. By the end of the book, Knuth has undergone a transformation of sorts, and neither she nor we can ever view the poor in the same way again. Knuth’s transformation is rooted in the prevailing message of Thrift Store Saints: When we serve the poor, they end up helping us as much as we help them. Throughout the book we are introduced to new “saints,” as Knuth thoughtfully, at times humorously, describes how her encounters with the poorest people led her to the greatest riches of God’s grace. Thrift Store Saints makes clear that it doesn’t require heroic Mother Teresa-types to make a difference with the poor, and it even more powerfully shows us that working with them is not gloomy, depressing work. Knuth’s moving stories demonstrate the profound joy any of us can experience when we see serving the poor not as social work, but as a spiritual path that leads us to the heart of Jesus.

Book Textiles and Clothing Classic Reprint

Download or read book Textiles and Clothing Classic Reprint written by Ellen Beers McGowan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-29 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Textiles and Clothing This book has been written primarily to meet a need arising from the introduction of the study of textiles into the curriculum of the high school. The aim has been, there fore, to present the subject matter in a form sufficiently simple and interesting to be grasped readily by the high school student, without sacrificing essential facts. It has not seemed desirable to explain in detail the mechanism of the various machines used in modern textile industries, but rather to show the student that the fundamental principles of textile manufacture found in the simple machines of primitive times are unchanged in the highly developed and complicated machinery of to-day. Minor emphasis has been given to certain necessarily technical paragraphs by printing these in type of a smaller size than that used for the body of the text. The authors emphasize the finished products and their relation to the household. Chapters have been introduced on the purchase, testing and economical use of textile ma terial, with the hope of pointing the way to a concrete and practical application of the study of textiles. The woman of to-day can no longer afford to be untrained in this respect, and because of present economic conditions a definite obliga tion is laid upon her to understand the nature and real worth of clothing material and house furnishings, in order to buy with judgment and economy. The girl in high school has the opportunity to acquire this knowledge, which will function in her later life. We are gradually breaking away from the formal teaching of sewing as an isolated subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Continental Clothing House: Facts and Figures for Everybody Into this vigorously pulsating heart of glorious things that are to be, this headquarters of a business activity which the most sanguine human forecast doubtless falls far short of correctly measuring in advance, we come to swell the tide with our contribution of capital, labor and enterprise, and to meet, as we believe, a manifest want of the people of Omaha and the splendid country of which it is the capital. We hope to merit the favor and custom not only of Omaha, but of the people beyond it on all sides; the people of Lincoln, the handsome capital of the State, and of all the flourishing towns and settlements along the various lines that converge upon and enter Omaha. We hope, too, to offer advantages in our line of business to the shrewd, wide awake people who come to Omaha from all along the Platte River, from Cheyenne, from the plains of Laramie to find a host of other patrons convinced that we can give them the best goods at the lowest figures, in Kansas City, Topeka, Denver and Colorado, and from all over the great plains, even unto Ogden and the Salt Lake City. Book Simple Garments for Children From 4 to 14 Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Simple Garments for Children From 4 to 14 My attention was first drawn to this subject some years ago, when I visited the Poor Law Schools of England. Here the superabundance of clothing worn by the children of the State was very marked. Excellent material was supplied, strong and durable, but the quantity used on the children was pitiful. Early Victorian patterns were for the most part used, and underneath the pleats and gathers the children looked swollen and shapeless. Not only did one regret the waste of good material, but the labour of the washing-day must have been so unnecessarily great and the discomfort Of the children was Obvious. Doubtless to-day this is improved in our State schools, but im'our elementary schools there is as yet but little improvement. Medical inspection has revealed much that is deplorable in this respect, and it' would seem that the moment has come to introduce some simpler form of clothing that may be gradually adopted in the schools. Book The Turn of the Screw

    Book Details:
  • Author : Henry James
  • Publisher : Aegitas
  • Release : 2024-08-22
  • ISBN : 0369411692
  • Pages : 120 pages

Download or read book The Turn of the Screw written by Henry James and published by Aegitas. This book was released on 2024-08-22 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Turn of the Screw by Henry James is a classic ghost story that continues to captivate readers over a century after its initial publication. Set in the late 19th century, the novella follows a young governess who is hired to care for two young children, Flora and Miles, at the remote and eerie Bly Manor. As the governess begins her duties, she becomes increasingly convinced that the manor is haunted by the spirits of the previous governess, Miss Jessel, and her lover, Peter Quint, who both died under mysterious circumstances. The story unfolds as the governess tries to protect the children from the malevolent ghosts, while also questioning her own sanity and the motives of the children in their interactions with the spirits. One of the most intriguing aspects of The Turn of the Screw is its unreliable narrator. The story is told through the perspective of the governess, whose mental state and perceptions of events are constantly called into question. This creates a sense of ambiguity and uncertainty, leaving readers to question whether the ghosts are real or just figments of the governess's imagination. James masterfully plays with the theme of perception and reality, leaving readers to draw their own conclusions about the events at Bly Manor. Another striking element of the novella is its use of Gothic elements. The isolated location, the decaying mansion, and the presence of ghosts all contribute to the eerie atmosphere of the story. James also incorporates psychological horror, as the governess's fears and paranoia intensify throughout the story, building tension and suspense. The Turn of the Screw is a prime example of Gothic literature, with its exploration of the dark side of human nature and the blurred lines between the living and the dead. One of the most controversial aspects of the novella is its ambiguous ending. The governess's final confrontation with the ghosts and the fate of the children are left open to interpretation, inviting readers to ponder the true meaning of the story. Some critics argue that the ghosts are a product of the governess's overactive imagination, while others believe that they are real and that the children are in danger. This open-ended conclusion has sparked countless debates and interpretations, making The Turn of the Screw a thought-provoking and enduring piece of literature. In addition to its literary merits, The Turn of the Screw also offers insight into the societal norms and expectations of the time period in which it was written. James explores themes of gender roles and class distinctions through the character of the governess, who is expected to be subservient and obedient to her male employer and to maintain the social hierarchy between herself and the children. The story also touches on the taboo subject of sexual relationships, particularly in regards to the ghosts and their influence on the children. Ultimately, The Turn of the Screw is a haunting and enigmatic work that continues to captivate readers with its complex characters, Gothic atmosphere, and thought-provoking themes. It is a testament to Henry James's mastery of storytelling and his ability to create a sense of unease and suspense that lingers long after the final page. A must-read for anyone interested in Gothic literature, psychological thrillers, or the blurred lines between reality and the supernatural.
