Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In February 1988, Jimmy Swaggart, the world's most watched televangelist, was caught consorting with a prostitute in New Orleans. This study examines Swaggart's rhetorical campaign to salvage his ministry in the aftermath of those actions. By analyzing his sermons, letters, and magazine articles the work seeks to discover the rationale that Swaggart offered his doctrinal community to justify the claim, I am worthy of forgiveness and continued support.Using Stephen Toulmin's model of informal argument as a tool to unlock the shared worldview of rhetor and audience, this study argues that Swaggart's overt stance, I am solely to blame for what I did, was not the conclusion his primary audience would reach. Using stories and doctrinal arguments, Swaggart successfully argued that he was not at fault for his actions, that his actions could accurately be blamed on other individuals, and that the entire ordeal would lead to an improved Swaggart. Yet because the arguments were part of the Pentecostal worldview shared by speaker and audience, many parts of the arguments were left unspoken. As such, they were completely missed by many outside observers.

Book Thrice Trumpeted Truths

Download or read book Thrice Trumpeted Truths written by J. Mark Holland and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2012-11 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Question: Why three? Answer: Curiosity! My curiosity was generated by numerous multiple repeats in the Scriptures. (See Genesis 6, 7, 8: Appendix A) The list is fascinating. "The search began with a question: Are there any significant, uniquely stated triples? We found that triples reverberate throughout the Scripture. More than 100 are identified in this study. It is as if the Lord is saying to the hard of heeding, Did you not hear me? I said it three times!" J. Mark Holland "An interesting and compelling study! Once one starts looking for and finding triplets in God's Word, their importance and significance is magnified." Bruce Etcheson "This is a book that accomplishes two things: First, it challenges a reader to seriously consider God's use of repetition in His Word to reinforce His truth; second, it leads the reader into knowing why obedience is a proper choice when confronted with God's repeated truths." David White "The strong foundational truths of this study have not only taken me on a jet tour through the birth, death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, but it has also been an adventure to search out the golden nuggets of God's precious Word in triplets. I trust that you will be thrice blessed as well, as you see the powerful Gospel of Jesus Christ interwoven throughout its pages." Sandy Lange (member of the original study group)

Book Thrice Greatest Hermes

Download or read book Thrice Greatest Hermes written by G. R. S. Mead and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 1906 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the edition including all three books. The so-called Hermetic writings have been known to Christian writers for many centuries. The early church Fathers (Justin Martyr, Tertullian, Clement of Alexandria) quote them in defense of Christianity. Stobaeus collected fragments of them. The Humanists knew and valued them. They were studied in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and in modern times have again been diligently examined by many scholars. G. R. S. Mead has issued a translation of the whole body of extant literature, with extended prolegomena, commentary, etc. There is a wide difference of opinion as to the date at which this literature was produced. Mead believes that some of the extant portions of it are at least as early as the earliest Christian writings, while von Christ assigns them to the third Christian century, and thinks that they show the influence of neo-Platonism. To affirm that they influenced New Testament usage would be hazardous, but they perhaps throw some light on the direction in which thought was moving in New Testament times.

Book Thrice a Stranger

Download or read book Thrice a Stranger written by William Mallinson and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-01-14 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Greek grandfather born a citizen of the Ottoman Empire who became an Italian national provides the starting point for this book, which, by focusing on the real story of a family against a background of historical events, shows how what the author calls the ‘minotaurs of fear and greed’ can be overcome and the pseudo-theories of many a pundit of so-called international relations can be demolished. It is not every day that the son of a Cumbrian who fought in the Great War meets the daughter of his Ottoman enemy, following the next war, and then marries her. The author’s grandfathers were on opposing sides in the Great War, one with the British at Gallipoli, the other in the Ottoman Army; in the next war, his father and uncle were on opposing sides to his aunt’s husband. His aunt was thrice a refugee, from Ottoman Turkey, Italian Rhodes, and then again from modern Turkey. This forms the rich backcloth to this historical account of the family vicissitudes engendered by the behaviour of Greece’s controversial Eleftherios Venizelos and Turkey’s bombastic Kemal Ataturk. Written and spoken accounts by family members and diplomatic documents are skilfully woven into a rich tapestry of that geohistorical toilet, the Eastern Mediterranean. The book brings to life some vital aspects of modern European history, ending with a trenchant critique of Greece and Turkey today, warts and all.
