Book Speech

Download or read book Speech written by Alvin Meyer Liberman and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alvin Liberman and his colleagues at Haskins Laboratories in New Haven created the techniques, the methods, and the insights appropriate to the study of speech perception. This volume brings together a carefully edited collection of twenty-three of their most important research articles, along with an introduction by Liberman that charts the progress of the research - the errors as well as the hits - over the past five decades. Liberman has been the main analytic and synthesizing scientist in the development of a field that holds a fascination for anyone interested in the place of speech in the biological scheme of things. The more specific implications cover a broad range: at the one extreme, the problems associated with the machine production and recognition of speech; at the other, our understanding of how children learn to read its alphabetic transcriptions, and why some cannot.

Book Towards Extensible and Adaptable Methods in Computing

Download or read book Towards Extensible and Adaptable Methods in Computing written by Shampa Chakraverty and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-04 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses extensible and adaptable computing, a broad range of methods and techniques used to systematically tackle the future growth of systems and respond proactively and seamlessly to change. The book is divided into five main sections: Agile Software Development, Data Management, Web Intelligence, Machine Learning and Computing in Education. These sub-domains of computing work together in mutually complementary ways to build systems and applications that scale well, and which can successfully meet the demands of changing times and contexts. The topics under each track have been carefully selected to highlight certain qualitative aspects of applications and systems, such as scalability, flexibility, integration, efficiency and context awareness. The first section (Agile Software Development) includes six contributions that address related issues, including risk management, test case prioritization and tools, open source software reliability and predicting the change proneness of software. The second section (Data Management) includes discussions on myriad issues, such as extending database caches using solid-state devices, efficient data transmission, healthcare applications and data security. In turn, the third section (Machine Learning) gathers papers that investigate ML algorithms and present their specific applications such as portfolio optimization, disruption classification and outlier detection. The fourth section (Web Intelligence) covers emerging applications such as metaphor detection, language identification and sentiment analysis, and brings to the fore web security issues such as fraud detection and trust/reputation systems. In closing, the fifth section (Computing in Education) focuses on various aspects of computer-aided pedagogical methods.

Book Evidence Based Applied Sport Psychology

Download or read book Evidence Based Applied Sport Psychology written by Roland A. Carlstedt, PhD and published by Springer Publishing Company. This book was released on 2012-11-13 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to call for a major paradigm shift in applied sport psychology by providing a wealth of systematic, scientifically validated research in a field where assessment and treatment has often been haphazard. In his quest to bring sport psychology to a higher level of validity, Dr. Carlstedt describes the most current assessment methods, intervention procedures, and promising research that are critical for use in evidence-based practice. These assessment and treatment methods are based on 25 years of rigorous scientific approaches and principles that incorporate the most sophisticated research methods now available. The book describes the mechanisms that influence peak performance or psychological performance deficits and the mental training process, and provides procedures that will take the guesswork out of typical assessment and mental training. It offers tools with which practitioners can reexamine their modus operandi and critically explore the mechanism of interaction outcomes. To this end, the book includes extensive data sets on personality, behavioral tendencies, mind-body responses, and performance outcome. Dr. Carlstedt advocates moving beyond compartmentalized therapeutic sessions in the office to directly observe athletic performance during training and actual competition. The text also contains individual and team case studies to enhance its focus on individualized, efficacy-tested protocols for each individual athlete. Key Features: Presents a detailed client-centered assessment and intervention model grounded in technology-supported, step-by-step procedures, followed by efficacy testing Focuses on the importance of empirical scrutiny and individualized, efficacy-tested protocols for each individual athlete Describes the Carlstedt Protocol containing a visualization efficiency test among many other technologically based assessment and training tools Provides a roadmap for achieving a gold-standard system of accountability Practitioners will learn how to work within Carlstedt's integrative model to improve athlete performance and contribute to the advancement of evidence-based applied sport psychology.

Book Nanoinformatics

Download or read book Nanoinformatics written by Isao Tanaka and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-01-15 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book brings out the state of the art on how informatics-based tools are used and expected to be used in nanomaterials research. There has been great progress in the area in which “big-data” generated by experiments or computations are fully utilized to accelerate discovery of new materials, key factors, and design rules. Data-intensive approaches play indispensable roles in advanced materials characterization. "Materials informatics" is the central paradigm in the new trend. "Nanoinformatics" is its essential subset, which focuses on nanostructures of materials such as surfaces, interfaces, dopants, and point defects, playing a critical role in determining materials properties. There have been significant advances in experimental and computational techniques to characterize individual atoms in nanostructures and to gain quantitative information. The collaboration of researchers in materials science and information science is growing actively and is creating a new trend in materials science and engineering.

This organaization has held workshops on OpenMP around the world since 1999: the European Wo- shop on OpenMP (EWOMP), the North American Workshop on OpenMP App- cations and Tools (WOMPAT), and the Asian Workshop on OpenMP Experiences and Implementation (WOMPEI) attracted annual audiences from academia and industry. The International Workshop on OpenMP (IWOMP) consolidated these three workshop series into a single annual international event that rotates across the previous workshop sites. The ?rst IWOMP meeting was held in 2005, in - gene, Oregon, USA. IWOMP 2006 took place in Reims, France, and IWOMP 2007 in Beijing, China. Each workshop drew over 60 participants from research and - dustry throughout the world. IWOMP 2008 continued the series with technical papers, panels, tutorials, and OpenMP status reports.
