Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fungi have been major players in the molecular revolution that has transformed biology. Because they can be manipulated as microorganisms, yeast and Neurospora provide information that is difficult to acquire with plants and animals, and experimental findings with fungi often throw light on corresponding processes in plants and animals. The filamentous fungus Neurospora crassa has become a valuable model organism because of its favorable features for genetic analysis and because of the vast store of information that has been acquired during 75 years of research. This compendium provides researchers and students with a concise account of current knowledge about the genes and genome of Neurospora, setting the stage for research that will follow completion of the genome sequence. This book, which is fully documented and abundantly illustrated, will be an indispensable tool in any laboratory that uses fungi for research in molecular genetics, classical genetics, developmental genetics, or cell biology. - Molecular, genetic, and phenotypic information for over 1000 nuclear genes - Genetic maps - Linkage group assignments for 1000 loci - 2300 references, 68 figures - Guide to electronic and other sources of information - Summary information on the mitochondrial genome - cDNAs identified from different stages of life - Classical, cytogenetic, and molecular data, anticipating completion of the genome sequence

Download or read book Genetics of Fungi written by Karl Esser and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The significance of genetics in biology today stems to a considerable extent from the knowledge which has been obtained through the use of fungi as experimental objects. As a result of their short generation time, their ease of culture under laboratory conditions, and the possibil ity of identifying the four products of meiosis through tetrad analysis, the fungi have proven themselves in many ways superior to the classic genetic experimental material such as Drosophila and maize. Because they permit investigation of genetic fine structure as well as biochemical analysis of the function of the genetic material, the fungi can be used, just as the bacteria and bacteriophages, for molecular biological research. Further, the fungi, because of their simple organi zation, are suitable for investigation of the genetic and physiological bases of morphogenesis and of extrachromosomal inheritance. This monograph is an attempt to summarize and interpret the results of genetic research on fungi. The reader should be reminded that review and interpretation of original research are inevitably influenced by the authors' own opinions. An understanding of the basic principles of genetics is assumed.

Download or read book Biochemistry of the amino acids written by Alton Meister and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 631 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biochemistry of the Amino Acids, Second Edition, Volume II focuses on the trends in research on amino acids and biochemistry. Given considerations are incorporation of amino acids into proteins, amino acid sequences, and discovery of amino acids. The first part of the book deals with intermediary metabolism of amino acids. Particularly noted are alanine, aspartic, adenylosuccinic, hydroxyaspartic acids, and asparagine. The book also has discussions on glutamic acid, glutamine, glycine, serine, and sarcosine. The processes and syntheses involved in these acids are noted. Another part of the book focuses on the formation, degradation, reactions, and conversion of acids. The processes and experiments discussed are supported by numerical analysis, and the biosynthesis of acids in microorganisms is also considered. The book also notes some disorders of amino acid metabolism in humans. These disorders include cystinuria, glycinuria, ammonemia, prolinemia, maple syrup urine disease, and homocystinuria. Discussions focus on how these diseases develop and the symptoms associated with them. The book is a vital source of data for readers interested in the study of amino acids.

Download or read book Microbial Biochemistry written by G.N. Cohen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-19 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microbial physiology, biochemistry, and genetics allowed the formulation of concepts that turned out to be important in the study of higher organisms. In the first section, the principles of bacterial growth are given, as well as the description of the different layers that enclose the bacterial cytoplasm, and their role in obtaining nutrients from the outside media through different permeability mechanism described in detail. A chapter is devoted to allostery and is indispensable for the comprehension of many regulatory mechanisms described throughout the book. Another section analyses the mechanisms by which cells obtain the energy necessary for their growth, glycolysis, the pentose phosphate pathway, the tricarboxylic and the anaplerotic cycles. Two chapters are devoted to classes of microorganisms rarely dealt with in textbooks, namely the Archaea, mainly the methanogenic bacteria, and the methylotrophs. Eight chapters describe the principles of the regulations at the transcriptional level, with the necessary knowledge of the machineries of transcription and translation. The next fifteen chapters deal with the biosynthesis of the cell building blocks, amino acids, purine and pyrimidine nucleotides and deoxynucleotides, water-soluble vitamins and coenzymes, isoprene and tetrapyrrole derivatives and vitamin B12. The two last chapters are devoted to the study of protein-DNA interactions and to the evolution of biosynthetic pathways. The considerable advances made in the last thirty years in the field by the introduction of gene cloning and sequencing and by the exponential development of physical methods such as X-ray crystallography or nuclear magnetic resonance have helped presenting metabolism under a multidisciplinary attractive angle. The level of readership presupposes some knowledge of chemistry and genetics at the undergraduate level. The target group is graduate students, researchers in Academia and industry.
Download or read book Current Topics in Cellular Regulation written by Bernard L. Horecker and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current Topics in Cellular Regulation, Volume 1 presents the fundamental mechanisms involved in the regulation of diverse cellular activities, including the transfer of genetic information, intermediary metabolism, and cellular differentiation. This book discusses the advances in the general area of cellular regulation. Organized into 10 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the molecular models that attempt to provide the correlation of the kinetic properties of the protein with its structural architecture. This text then examines several aspects of metabolism and of metabolic enzymes that appear to represent adaptations to the need to limit solute concentrations and conserve solvent capacity. Other chapters consider the factors that determine the overall rates of metabolic pathways. This book discusses as well the biosynthetic pathways leading to the branched-chain amino acids. The final chapter deals with the structure and mechanism of action of pyruvate carboxylase. This book is a valuable resource for biologists and biochemists.
