Book Threescore and More

Book excerpt: Ageism is too often an accepted form of bias, even though the facts support the value of aging. Airline pilots forced to retire at the arbitrary age of 65 are usually at the top of their game. Forced retirement in most organizations remove highly skilled performers as well as role models and trainers for newer generations. Instead of revelling in who we are, we begin to try to look younger as soon as possible, with 16-year-old women receiving nose and breast surgery as birthday presents. People have become inured to "losing" abilities as they age instead of appreciating new abilities that only age can bestow. Everyone extols the need for gender equality, lest we lose the talents of half of our population. Yet, people over 65 are currently 15 percent of the US population (46.2 million) and is projected to rise to 34 percent. Due to the IRA legislation of the Reagan era — and the lack of need to purchase homes, college educations, cars, or health care—the discretionary assets are also substantial. It's time these people took control of their lives and influence on everything from business to politics.

This book was released on 2018-06-29 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Three Score Years and Ten' Life-Long Memories of Fort Snelling, Minnesota, and Other Parts of the West by Charlotte Ouisconsin Clark Van Cleve CHAPTER I. One evening long ago, when this wonderful century, now in a vigorous old age, had just passed its nineteenth birthday, in a bright, cheerful sitting-room in the good old city of Hartford, Conn., sat a fair young matron beside a cradle in which lay sleeping a beautiful boy a year and a half old. The gentle motion of her little slippered foot on the rocker, keeping time with the soft humming of a cradle hymn; the work-basket near by; and the dainty needle work in her hand; the table tastefully spread for two, and the clear wood fire in the old-fashioned fireplace, formed as restful a picture of domestic peace and content as one could wish to see. But the expectant look in the bright blue eyes, uplifted at each sound, clearly indicated that some one was coming who should round out this little circle and make it complete. And now the familiar footstep draws near and the husband and father enters; she rises joyfully to meet him, but seeing in his face a look of grief or pain, exclaims, "What is it, dear husband?" He holds her very close, but cannot find words to tell her that which will cross all their cherished plans of a year's quiet resting in her native city; and handing her an official document, with its ominous red seal newly broken, he watches her anxiously as she reads: Lieutenant Nathan Clark, U. S. Fifth Infantry: You are hereby appointed Assistant Commissary of Subsistence, and will forthwith join your regiment at Detroit, which is under orders to move to the Mississippi river and establish a military post at the mouth of the St. Peters river. Book Three Score Years and Ten or More

Download or read book Three Score Years and Ten or More written by Trevor James Cooper and published by Austin Macauley Publishers. This book was released on 2024-04-26 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three Score Years and Ten: Or More? delves into the enduring fascination with individuals who live beyond 100 years. The intrigue centres not only on the accomplishment itself but also on the mysteries of how and why these people achieve such remarkable longevity. This research shifts its focus from contemporary centenarians, whose ages can be more reliably verified due to improved record-keeping, to an earlier era marked by less clear historical records. It investigates the genesis of this interest and the emergence of what could be termed a ‘cult of centenarianism.’ During this period, claims of extreme old age sparked debates between believers and sceptics, creating a cultural divide. The book also examines the significant role media played in this phenomenon. The portrayal and promotion of centenarians by the media of the time laid the groundwork for themes explored in this book, contributing to the ongoing public intrigue surrounding individuals of advanced age.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Threescore and Ten But when I read through what I've put down I see what nonsense it is. Coming to terms With life! As though I'm any more likely to succeed now in domg what I've failed to do throughout my seventy-six years. The truth is, Liz zie, when I wrote that about coming to terms With life I'd worked myself up into a state. By thinking of you I'd taken on something of your strength. But that was yesterday and today's today, and I can see now that though I was trying to be truthful I was projecting something of the feeling of strength I had then into my account of riding home with Will. Oh, I set out stout-heartedly enough, and all through the drive I felt you near to me, very near, as though you were holding my hand. Will was in the driver's seat of course; I sat in the back. It was where he'd put me and where I wanted to be. Talk was the last thing either of us wished for. He sat driving that machine, the master of it, and I stared at the back of his neck. It was red, I thought, with anger, and I could imagine the set of his jaw and the thin line of his angry compressed lips. And I thought - it struck me suddenly as it had never done before - Will is a boss! A master was what we called them when we were young. I felt very small and frightened at that, not at all a giant. He wasn't my boss of course, but still he was a boss, and it made me sad, for the knowledge seemed to get in the way between us: you know, Lizzie, I've been against bosses all my life. Yes, I know what you will say; but good or bad, Lizzie, bosses are always bosses. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: "How long can humans live? Is immortality possible? Just what is the aging process? The aging and inevitable death of the human body have inspired more myths and outrageous quackery than anything else subject to scientific inquiry. . . . Now comes a most fascinating book, insightful and scholarly, to provide what answers have emerged so far." --San Francisco Chronicle Here, at last, preeminent cell biologist Leonard Hayflick presents the truth about human aging. Based on more than thirty years of pioneering research in the field, How and Why We Age explores not only how our major biological systems change as we grow older, but also examines the intangible alterations in our modes of thinking and feeling, our moods and sexual desires, our personality traits and our memories. With the immediacy of the latest scientific discoveries, Dr. Hayflick explains how aging affects every part of the body, and dispels many of the most persistent aging myths, to show that: * Hearts do not naturally get weaker with age. * Regular exercise and a low-fat diet won't slow aging. * Curing cancer would only add two years to the average sixty-five-year-old American life. Curing heart disease, however would add fourteen years. * Only five percent of people over the age of sixty-five are in nursing homes * No human has lived--or probably can live--past 120 years. Gracefully written, clearly organized, and packed with essential facts and statistics, How and Why We Age is a landmark study of the aging process for readers of all ages. "Written in clear, nontechnical language, it is an excellent introduction to the scientific and demographic literature on this multifacetedsubject." --Nature
