Sturdy, stocky, short, broadchested, with narrow long eyes and swarthy skin, he looked a Japanese of the Japanese, and yet he was a full-blooded Indian. It is easy to remember thereafter that the Behring Strait is not much more than thirty miles wide, and is frozen solid every winter. From wherever may have come the aborigines of lower America, I know not, but the Alaskan Indians are descended from the Japanese, and not so very remotely. That boy could have walked the streets of Tokio without attracting the slightest attention. I am convinced no one would have thought him other than an ordinary Japanese coolie. And he was not an Eskimo living on the seashore, but came from one of the river tribes, and where he was taught English is 500 miles from Behring Sea. After two winters of experience, the Dawsonites continue to think lightly of the terrors of the cold, and to but few apparently is the extreme of temperature a deterrent to exercise. Sleighing continues to be a pastime, with the temperature marking 40 to 50 below zero, but only with this season does it enter into the category of a fashionable recreation. Hitherto dog-sled teams per formed the full service of winter travel, and divided with skating and ski -ing the winter exercise; but this year the snow cause ways will be lively with the jingling of cutter bells and the rapid pacing of the horse. The trip occupied, approximately, ten weeks, and carried us not only through the interior, along the whole course of the Yukon River, but to many places on the coast and among the islands not readily accessible by the regular means of travel. As will be readily under stood, enjoyed peculiarly favourable opportunities to study the resources and the possibilities of the country, and the following pages on Alaska, in their original form, were written for my paper after my return home, and published in it exclusively. There appears to be a demand for reliable and up-to-date information about that coun try - that, and the urgent request of men who have read what I have written, and who know Alaska, that it be given permanent and convenient form, are the excuses for this volume.
