Excerpt: ...with an order from a baker for ten sacks of flour. While the porter was piling it on the sled, I said to the boy: 'I have been over in your country.' 'What's that?' he replied. 'I've been over in your country, ' I repeated; 'I've been to Yokohama, Tokio, and Nagasaki. What part of Japan did you come from?' 'Why, what do you take me for?' he brusquely ejaculated. 'For a Japanese, of course, ' I said. 'I ain't no Japanese; I'm a full-blooded Indian, and no Japanese, ' he sternly repeated, drawing himself together. I was amazed. 'Where in the world did you learn English so well V I gasped. 'At the missionary school at Holy Cross, on the Lower Yukon, ' he responded; and, gathering the dogs up from the snow, where they lay in supreme content, he surlily lashed them off to the familiar refrain of' Mush! Mush! Mush!' I leave the above to the ethnologists. If ever I saw a Japanese in Yokohama, that Indian boy of the Yukon was one. Sturdy, stocky, short, broadchested, with narrow long eyes and swarthy skin, he looked a Japanese of the Japanese, and yet he was a full-blooded Indian. It is easy to remember thereafter that the Behring Strait is not much more than thirty miles wide, and is frozen solid every winter. From wherever may have come the aborigines of lower America, I know not, but the Alaskan Indians are descended from the Japanese, and not so very remotely. That boy could have walked the streets of Tokio without attracting the slightest attention. I am convinced no one would have thought him other than an ordinary Japanese coolie. And he was not an Eskimo living on the seashore, but came from one of the river tribes, and where he was taught English is 500 miles from Behring Sea. The dogs he drove that day were of the pure Malamute stock--tha

Download or read book A Year s Progress in the Klondike Classic Reprint written by Angelo Heilprin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-12 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Year's Progress in the Klondike Two or more lines of telephone unite Dawson with the nearer mining region, and a partial city service has also been established. The city remains as yet without an electric-light plant, but it is by no means unlikely that before the present season has passed the darkness of the winter night will be lifted by the are light, and much of the oppressiveness of the closed season thereby removed. After two winters of experience, the Dawsonites continue to think lightly of the terrors of the cold, and to but few apparently is the extreme of temperature a deterrent to exercise. Sleighing continues to be a pastime, with the temperature marking 40 to 50 below zero, but only with this season does it enter into the category of a fashionable recreation. Hitherto dog-sled teams per formed the full service of winter travel, and divided with skating and ski -ing the winter exercise; but this year the snow cause ways will be lively with the jingling of cutter bells and the rapid pacing of the horse. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The White Trail: A Story of the Early Days of Klondike The Wife Trail is a story from life, and not a single character mentioned therein has been created to fulfil the purpose of the storyteller's art. From a traveller this may be taken either as an apology for his own demerits of diction, or as an incentive to the reader to accept much of his statements in their truer light of realism. May I venture to put forth both pleas? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alaska and the Klondike When the special subcommittee of the Senate Com mittee on Territories visited Alaska in the summer of 1903 for the purpose of gathering information which would enable them to legislate wisely and helpfully with regard to that great district, I was fortunate enough to obtain permission to accompany the senatorial party in an unofficial capacity. The trip occupied, approximately, ten weeks, and carried us not only through the interior, along the whole course of the Yukon River, but to many places on the coast and among the islands not readily accessible by the regular means of travel. As will be readily under stood, enjoyed peculiarly favourable opportunities to study the resources and the possibilities of the country, and the following pages on Alaska, in their original form, were written for my paper after my return home, and published in it exclusively. There appears to be a demand for reliable and up-to-date information about that coun try - that, and the urgent request of men who have read what I have written, and who know Alaska, that it be given permanent and convenient form, are the excuses for this volume. For this purpose the original story of Alaska has been carefully revised and the statistical information brought down to include the commercial and industrial operations of the year 1904.
