Book The Desert and the Sea

Download or read book The Desert and the Sea written by Michael Scott Moore and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2019-05-28 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael Scott Moore, a journalist and the author of Sweetness and Blood, incorporates personal narrative and rigorous investigative journalism in this profound and revelatory memoir of his three-year captivity by Somali pirates—a riveting, thoughtful, and emotionally resonant exploration of foreign policy, religious extremism, and the costs of survival. In January 2012, having covered a Somali pirate trial in Hamburg for Spiegel Online International—and funded by a grant from the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting—Michael Scott Moore traveled to the Horn of Africa to write about piracy and ways to end it. In a terrible twist of fate, Moore himself was kidnapped and subsequently held captive by Somali pirates. Subjected to conditions that break even the strongest spirits—physical injury, starvation, isolation, terror—Moore’s survival is a testament to his indomitable strength of mind. In September 2014, after 977 days, he walked free when his ransom was put together by the help of several US and German institutions, friends, colleagues, and his strong-willed mother. Yet Moore’s own struggle is only part of the story: The Desert and the Sea falls at the intersection of reportage, memoir, and history. Caught between Muslim pirates, the looming threat of Al-Shabaab, and the rise of ISIS, Moore observes the worlds that surrounded him—the economics and history of piracy; the effects of post-colonialism; the politics of hostage negotiation and ransom; while also conjuring the various faces of Islam—and places his ordeal in the context of the larger political and historical issues. A sort of Catch-22 meets Black Hawk Down, The Desert and the Sea is written with dark humor, candor, and a journalist’s clinical distance and eye for detail. Moore offers an intimate and otherwise inaccessible view of life as we cannot fathom it, brilliantly weaving his own experience as a hostage with the social, economic, religious, and political factors creating it. The Desert and the Sea is wildly compelling and a book that will take its place next to titles like Den of Lions and Even Silence Has an End.

Book Two Steak Taco Combos and a Pair of Sig Sauers

Download or read book Two Steak Taco Combos and a Pair of Sig Sauers written by Neil S. Plakcy and published by Down & Out Books. This book was released on 2021-11-01 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bodyguards Aidan Greene and Liam McCullough don’t do hostage rescues. But Liam’s SEAL buddy Joey is still on active duty in Afghanistan, so when he asks for help locating his missing fiancée, they have to step up. Their partnership, in life and close protection, has spanned twelve books in the Have Body, Will Guard series. To rescue social worker Cathy Beth, they’ll have to rely on Liam’s physical strength and Aidan’s out of the box thinking. Flying in from their home base on the French Riviera, they’ll need local advice, in the form of Cathy Beth’s BFF, an over-the-top drag queen, and a pair of guns from a Chicago taco truck. Cathy Beth’s kidnapping shines a light on a grim immigrant tradition of female genital mutilation, and it’s up to Aidan and Liam to rescue Cathy Beth and her teen charge and shut down a doctor’s evil practice. Fortunately, they’re up to the challenge. Praise for TWO STEAK TACO COMBOS AND A PAIR OF SIG SAUERS: “Not all novelists are equally good at short formats. Neil Plakcy, on the other hand, is a master of both. In Two Steak Tacos Combos and a Pair of Sig Sauers, he pulls fans of the “Have Body, Will Guard” series out of the exotic, sometimes dangerous, hills of the French Riviera and drops us onto the mean streets of the USA. When the last of Liam’s Navy SEAL buddies calls for help—from the battlefield, no less—Liam and Aidan hop on the next flight out and head to Chicago to locate Liam’s best friend’s missing wife. What we get is a fast-paced inside look at the tenuous lives of American immigrants, torn from their homelands by violence; lives in which old, and sometimes bad, customs are still practiced. Through the familiar, loving, give-and-take of these two, smart, brave men, we get a ringside seat at a little American tragedy, all the more poignant for the fact that it plays out in the shadow of the American Dream.” — Ulysses Grant Dietz, author of Cliffhanger

Download or read book Wrong Turn written by Gian Gentile and published by New Press, The. This book was released on 2015-03-03 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A searing indictment of US strategy in Afghanistan from a distinguished military leader and West Point military historian—“A remarkable book” (National Review). In 2008, Col. Gian Gentile exposed a growing rift among military intellectuals with an article titled “Misreading the Surge Threatens U.S. Army’s Conventional Capabilities,” that appeared in World Politics Review. While the years of US strategy in Afghanistan had been dominated by the doctrine of counterinsurgency (COIN), Gentile and a small group of dissident officers and defense analysts began to question the necessity and efficacy of COIN—essentially armed nation-building—in achieving the United States’ limited core policy objective in Afghanistan: the destruction of Al Qaeda. Drawing both on the author’s experiences as a combat battalion commander in the Iraq War and his research into the application of counterinsurgency in a variety of historical contexts, Wrong Turn is a brilliant summation of Gentile’s views of the failures of COIN, as well as a trenchant reevaluation of US operations in Afghanistan. “Gentile is convinced that Obama’s ‘surge’ in Afghanistan can’t work. . . . And, if Afghanistan doesn’t turn around soon, the Democrats . . . who have come to embrace the Petraeus-Nagl view of modern warfare . . . may find themselves wondering whether it’s time to go back to the drawing board.” —The New Republic

Catch and Kill is an inside account of the beguiling and nomadic nature of the unholy trinity of politics—the winning, the using, the losing. Joel Deane's gripping study of the politics of power takes us into the inner sanctum of state and national politics in Australia, investigating how four friends—Steve Bracks, John Brumby, John Thwaites, and Rob Hulls—beat the factions, won office in Victoria, then tried to hijack Canberra. It delivers a slice of political gothic, exploring the heart of the contemporary Labor Party in search of the nature of power.

Book excerpt: “Delightful debut travelogue by botanist Malusa, who cycled to the lowest point on each of six continents.” —Kirkus Reviews With plenty of sunscreen and a cold beer swaddled in his sleeping bag, writer and botanist Jim Malusa bicycled alone to the lowest point on each of six continents, a six–year series of “anti–expeditions” to “anti–summits.” His journeys took him to Lake Eyre in the arid heart of Australia, along Moses’ route to the Dead Sea, and from Moscow to the Caspian Sea. He pedaled across the Andes to Patagonia, around tiny Djibouti in the Horn of Africa, and from Tucson to Death Valley. With a scientist’s eye, Malusa vividly observes local landscapes and creatures. As a lone man, he is overfed by grandmothers, courted by ladies of the night in Volgograd, invited into a mosque by Africa’s most feared tribe, chased by sandstorms and hurricanes—yet Malusa keeps riding. His reward: the deep silence of the world’s great depressions. A large–hearted narrative of what happens when a friendly, perceptive American puts himself at the mercy of strange landscapes and their denizens, Into Thick Air presents one of the most talented new voices in contemporary travel writing. “I’ve followed all of Jim’s amazing and hilarious journeys, and I am happy to claim him as one of my favorite writers.” —Barbara Kingsolver, New York Times bestselling author “His descriptions of desert landscapes can be extraordinary . . . You can almost feel the dry gusts turning Malusa’s lips into cracked leather.” —The New York Times Book Review

Many others play pivotal roles in this epic tale of ancient magic and adventure. Don't miss this exciting tale of an ancient Goddess, mystical evil, and epic battles! Reviews: ***** This is a good read. It takes up where both the first and second books left off - yeah, both of them. I like the time-walking, the mystical shadow warriors, and Lady Mist and sergeants rule the army! There's good comic relief with the comical snake Ith . ·· JD King ***** The changing landscape of the story and of the desert, war, magic, and a touch of sensuality, I was all in. ·· W.R. Masters ***** ...What I most enjoy about this story is the ability of the author to draw one into the minds of his characters, even those who happen to be on the "wrong" side of the battle. Additionally, the banter is natural and entertaining, the characters are complex and dynamic, and the battles are epic and exciting. On that note, few authors are able to narrate a battle with such skill that they can keep me from skimming through them, but R.L. Kiser is one of them. · · Patricia Hamill on Goodreads **** R.L. Kiser has created a really epic trilogy with the Tales of the Crystal series and I have loved each one more than the other. The Twelve Tablets is fast paced and it really forces your brain to try to keep up with all of the action, while at the same time keeping you engaged in the characters. For me, this book is very character driven and I like that fact. Each character is well fleshed out and you can picture them in your mind and understand why they choose to do the actions they do. Lovers of fantasy are really going to enjoy this last installment of the series because it hits all the key points you like to see in well written fantasy work. I am glad that I started reading this series and would highly recommend it. ·· Kathryn Bennett for Readers' Favorite
