Book excerpt: Eighteen-year-old Haven doesn’t remember life before the Surge. Before electricity was zapped to near non-existence. Before families sold their children and big cities became ghost towns. Before she met her best friend Cricket, the 6’10” boy she rescued from a freak show. After spending a year as the McCall circus’s star dancer, Haven is blindsided when her employer sells her to a brothel. Refusing to be sold into prostitution, she hatches an escape plan, but after her final show, she and Cricket are interrupted mid-escape by an intoxicated assassin named Breck. He is everything Haven fears about the outside world - dangerous, cold, and yet incredibly charming. But Breck’s arrival ends with a trail of blood and their faces plastered on WANTED posters. Haven agrees to leave under his protection on one condition - Cricket goes too - and because Breck can’t fight his burning infatuation with Haven, he agrees. Hopping trains and hiding out in a misfit circus wasn’t the life she’d envisioned, but as Breck’s hard exterior softens and Cricket’s smile is no longer painted, Haven finally realizes how badly she wants to be free and in control of her own life. With the brothel and McCall’s investors closing in on them, Haven must fight for what she wants - but the price for freedom is greater than she ever imagined.

Download or read book The Curse of Ham written by David M. Goldenberg and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2009-04-11 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How old is prejudice against black people? Were the racist attitudes that fueled the Atlantic slave trade firmly in place 700 years before the European discovery of sub-Saharan Africa? In this groundbreaking book, David Goldenberg seeks to discover how dark-skinned peoples, especially black Africans, were portrayed in the Bible and by those who interpreted the Bible--Jews, Christians, and Muslims. Unprecedented in rigor and breadth, his investigation covers a 1,500-year period, from ancient Israel (around 800 B.C.E.) to the eighth century C.E., after the birth of Islam. By tracing the development of anti-Black sentiment during this time, Goldenberg uncovers views about race, color, and slavery that took shape over the centuries--most centrally, the belief that the biblical Ham and his descendants, the black Africans, had been cursed by God with eternal slavery. Goldenberg begins by examining a host of references to black Africans in biblical and postbiblical Jewish literature. From there he moves the inquiry from Black as an ethnic group to black as color, and early Jewish attitudes toward dark skin color. He goes on to ask when the black African first became identified as slave in the Near East, and, in a powerful culmination, discusses the resounding influence of this identification on Jewish, Christian, and Islamic thinking, noting each tradition's exegetical treatment of pertinent biblical passages. Authoritative, fluidly written, and situated at a richly illuminating nexus of images, attitudes, and history, The Curse of Ham is sure to have a profound and lasting impact on the perennial debate over the roots of racism and slavery, and on the study of early Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

Book The Curse of Cain

  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 1997-05-15
  • ISBN : 9780226741994

Download or read book The Curse of Cain written by Regina M. Schwartz and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1997-05-15 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Regina Schwartz, we ignore the dark side of the Bible to our peril. The perplexing story of Cain and Abel is emblematic of the tenacious influence of the Bible on secular notions of identity - notions that are all too often violently exclusionary, negatively defining "us" against "them" in ethnic, religious, racial, gender, and nationalistic terms. In this compelling work of cultural and biblical criticism, Schwartz contends that it is the very concept of monotheism and its jealous demand for exclusive allegiance - to one God, one Land, one Nation or one People - that informs the model of collective identity forged in violence, against the other.

Book The Pennymores and the Curse of the Invisible Quill

Download or read book The Pennymores and the Curse of the Invisible Quill written by Eric Koester and published by New Degree Press. This book was released on 2022-04-25 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This “supernatural adventure story, filled with atmosphere, twists, the sublime and dripping with heart” (NY Weekly)—about a young girl whose beliefs about magic are shattered when her brother vanishes in the middle of the night—is perfect for fans of Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, Narnia, & The School of Good & Evil. Inspired from a bedtime story created by Eric and daughters Quinn and Parker, the Pennymores begins with a simple premise: what would the world look like if writing were forbidden. How would we communicate, how would we engage, how would we transact, how would we rule, and how would we remember? And what happens when a group of 11-year olds began to question this idea and push against a roving mob bent on preventing writing from ever returning? The Plumes, a secret writing society created by Parker Pennymore, vows to teach her classmates the power of writing and along the way uncovers a world of magic writers hidden before their eyes. It's an adventure story, a story of family, and a fantastical journey of whimsy, imagination, and creativity that all happens with the magical stroke of a quill. The setting was first inspired by Malala Yousafzai and her mission to help more than 120 million girls around the world who are not able to attend school. Proceeds of the book's sales will benefit the Malala Foundation in an effort to ensure writing is never forbidden, banned, outlawed, or stopped -- letting the magical power of writing live free. There's magical creativity in the book that could only come from the contribution of children's minds, and our story was created just as both Percy Jackson and the Lord of the Rings Trilogy began as bedtime stories by Rick Riordan and JRR Tolkien, respectively. Inside this world, you'll meet all varieties of creatures from talking animals, elves, dwarves, wizards, witches, and much more as you go deep inside a unique world built around the written word.

Book Fortune and the Cursed

Download or read book Fortune and the Cursed written by Katherine Swancutt and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2012-06-01 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Innovation-making is a classic theme in anthropology that reveals how people fine-tune their ontologies, live in the world and conceive of it as they do. This ethnographic study is an entrance into the world of Buryat Mongol divination, where a group of cursed shamans undertake the ‘race against time’ to produce innovative remedies that will improve their fallen fortunes at an unconventional pace. Drawing on parallels between social anthropology and chaos theory, the author gives an in-depth account of how Buryat shamans and their notion of fortune operate as ‘strange attractors’ who propagate the ongoing process of innovation-making. With its view into this long-term ‘cursing war’ between two shamanic factions in a rural Mongolian district, and the comparative findings on cursing in rural China, this book is a needed resource for anyone with an interest in the anthropology of religion, shamanism, witchcraft and genealogical change.

Download or read book The Curse Removed written by Dan Salter and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-08-18 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The atonement is the central doctrine of our Christian faith. Today’s most popular model—penal substitution—presumes Jesus took on the guilt of sins to pay for them with his death. But that courtroom scenario, lacking justice and open-armed forgiveness, is riddled with questions of how guilt is transferred and why punishing another for a crime is just. The recent revival of Christus Victor and mimetic atonement theories may properly deny the Father-to-Son wrath of penal substitution, but they, too, fall short in explaining the transference of the victory of Jesus’s atonement to the sinner who needs rescue. Addressing these problems, Dan Salter’s biblically faithful recast of a redemptive atonement highlights both our human physical essence and our spiritual identity as the beneficiaries of God’s restoration. True justice and forgiveness can occur only with The Curse Removed.
